| Gary Plunkitt, Rick Ryan, and I went to an old-timers game at
the RCA DOME in Indianapolis in the summer of 1983. At that game, I got Joe
Dimaggio's autograph IN PERSON. I had to knock down three or four little rug
rats to reach the great Yankee Clipper, however. Also hearing Early Wynn yell
at Gary and watching my towering companion wilt like a leaf is a humorous
memory for me. Less so for Gary, I'm afraid. A comical memory is my getting
to hold Gene Freese's beer at the Old Bush Stadium in Indianapolis, former
home of the Indianapolis Indians, and my spilling a pile of baseball cards at
Cookie Rojas' feet(a moment after he said he wouldn't sign cards and I had
assured him I had none) can still make my face blush. |
