The series opener featured a nail-biting pitchers' duel for the first 5 innings, as the Eels' Jim Bunning and Spiders' Bob Veale locked up in shutout ball, trading out for out. The Spiders broke through first on a suprise solo home run in the 6th by 2b-man Jerry Lumpe. But Veale, whose wildness was known throughout the season, couldn't hold the Eels, who came back to tie with back-to-back doubles by Bill White and Eddie Brinkman in the bottom of the 6th. Game 2:
Game 2 promised another tight pitchers' duel, as the Eels countered Spiders staff-ace Dean Chance with Whitey Ford. However, it was not to be. The normally-anemic bats of the Spiders got to the Eels lefty early and often, and when Ford departed after 5 innings, it was already 6-1 Spiders. Porous defense and the timely big hit were the big story, with Leon Wagner's 2-run homer putting the game out of reach. The Eels brought in Jose Santiago for some cleanup work, and he didn't do the job, allowing another 6 runs in the 6th and 7th (on 9 hits, two doubles). Every Spiders starter hit safely, including the pitcher Chance, who pitched a gem, until he began to tire in the late going. Jim Roland came on to retire the Eels, but not before making things interesting--if this were a closer game. Game 3: The Eels struck early against Spiders Game 3 starter Mickey Lolich, when Brooks Robinson singled home Curt Flood and Willie Mays in the 1st inning. Mike Hershberger's single cut the lead in two, but the Eels added insurance runs in the 6th, 7th, and 9th inning to ice the 5-2 final, and a victory for Juan Pizarro. Game 4: Although back-to-back doubles by Bill White and Brooks Robinson put the Eels in front 1-0 in the 4th, it was Eels starter Jim Bunning who faltered and Spiders starter Bob Veale who prevailed in Game 4. Doug Clemens' 2-run single in the 7th put the Spiders on top 2-1, then, in the 8th Jim Gentiles 3rd homer of the series, a 2-run shot, added insurance runs. These proved necessary, as Willie Mays led off the 9th with a triple and scored easily. But the final was 4-2 Spiders. Game 5: With the Eels on the brink of elimination, they bore down hard on Spiders starter Dean Chance, who was almost unstoppable all year at Chavez Ravine. However, he was ineffective early on in this game, giving up 3 hits and 2 walks in the first inning for an early 3-0 Eels lead. The Spiders did put together 4 singles for 2 runs in the 2nd inning, narrowing the score to 3-2. Then, after Curt Flood singled home Bill Mazeroski in the 4th to make it 4-2 Elkhart, Chance was lifted for a pinch hitter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning. This seemed crafty at the time, as pinch-hitter Chuck Hinton delivered a 2-run single to tie the score, and Jerry Lumpe broke the tie. Ed Rakow, one-time staff ace of the Spiders in their lowlier days, came on to protect the lead, but couldn't as he experienced one of his worst relief outings of the year, surrendering 3 runs in two innings to set up the 7-5 final score and Eels victory. The key hit was Johnny Roseboro's 2-run single in the 5th inning. Game 6: The Spiders struck first when Richie Allen delivered Joe Gaines in the 1st inning against Juan Pizarro. But Lolich, pitching better than in his first appearance, still showed signs of fatigue, and surrendered a 2-run single to Bill Mazeroski in the 4th, making it 2-1 Eels. But the Spiders answered, when Joe Gaines delivered a 2-run shot in the top of the 5th. Jim Gentile added an insurance run in the 7th. Lolich was brought out to start the 7th, but he surrendered a home run to Johnny Roseboro, making it 4-3. After walking pinch-hitter Alex Johnson, Cleveland relief ace Sammy Ellis was brought in to strike out Curt Flood to end the threat. Then, the unthinkable happened, as Sammy Ellis collapsed in the bottom of the 8th, giving up a lead-off double to Wes Covington and a home run to Willie Mays. This put the Eels up 5-4, and Bob Lee was able to close it out for the final. Game 7:
Bob Veale entered the game rested and Jim Bunning was showing some fatigue, but it was Veale who had nothing in the final. In the second inning, he walked in a run with the bases loaded and gave up a sac fly to the pitcher Jim Bunning. In the 3rd, a 2-run double by Brooks Robinson was followed by an rbi single by Mazeroski. Then, in the 4th, he completely ran out of gas, as Willie Mays and Bill White stroked back-to-back homers. It was 8-0 when Veale left the game. Jim Roland came on in the 5th and worked two innings, surrendering the Eels' 9th run on Joe Torre's passed ball. Leon Wagner's solo homer in the 9th was the only blemish on Jim Bunning's sterling complete-game performance. Eels come from a 3-1 series deficit to take the final 3 games and win in 7.
