AL vs. NL
SPB1-1968 WS GAME 1
The 1968 SPB World Series got underway at Dodger Stadium with an eagerly anticipated matchup between the
Flushing Rats’ Gaylord Perry (27-7) and the hometown Hollywood Stars’ Bob Gibson (24-6). Brown Derby restaurant
owner Bob Cobb, a driving force behind the Stars’ move to Hollywood five years ago, threw out the first pitch,
and longtime Stars booster Danny Kaye sang the National Anthem. Kaye’s hot-selling version of “Let’s Flush Those
Rats Back to New York City” was officially banned from the stadium, but could be heard on many portable radios
along with the dulcet tones of Stars’ broadcaster Vin Scully.
Flushing leadoff man Lou Brock stunned the home fans by singling on Gibson’s first pitch, but Gibson immediately
picked him off first. One out later Carl Yastrzemski gave the Rats the lead with a long home run to the right field
pavilion. Working out of several jams, Perry nursed the 1-0 lead until the fourth, when his defense betrayed him.
After getting two quick outs, a wild throw after a routine grounder to second baseman Cookie Rojas put Jim Fregosi
on second. Aurelio “Radio” Rodriguez immediately drove in Fregosi with a single to center that knotted the game.
The 1-1 tie stood until the bottom of the sixth, when Wonderful Willie Smith put Hollywood ahead with a two-out solo
homer. The lead held until the top of the eighth, when singles by Joe Keough (pinch-hitting for Perry) and Tony Perez,
sandwiched around a sac hit, chased Gibson from the hill. Darold Knowles, brought in to pitch to Yastrzemski, walked
him to load the bases. New pitcher Dock Ellis gave up the tying run on a sac fly by Ernie Banks, but then got Johnny
Bench to end the threat.
With Gibson and Perry both gone, the bullpens took over and began hanging up goose eggs as the game went into extra
innings. Ellis kept the Rats at Bay through the ninth and tenth, and Ron Taylor worked the top of the 11th without a
run scoring. Pete Mikkelson (a scoreless eighth) and Dave Baldwin (ninth and tenth) did similar stout work for Flushing.
Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, the Stars put together a rally. Tom Haller doubled off Baldwin to lead off the
frame, and after an intentional walk to Willie Smith, Jim Fregosi flied to right, sending Julian Javier, who had run
for Haller, to third. Bob Locker then took over for the tiring Baldwin and fanned Rodriguez for the second out. The
Rats looked like they had dodged the bullet when Locker induced Wes Parker to hit a slow roller to Bert Campaneris…
but for the second time in the game, the Rats’ defense betayed them. Campy booted the grounder, and Javier raced home
with the winning run. It was a tense 3-2 win in 11 innings for the Stars, who grabbed a one-game-to-none series lead.

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 2
On a beautiful 71 degree day at Dodger Stadium, the Hollywood Stars took on the Flushing Rats in Game 2 of the 1968 World
Series. As usual in Tinseltown, numerous “stars’ were in attendance. The Beach Boys sang the National Anthem in beautiful
four-part harmony, while the “founder of the feast,” Stars money-man Rupert Murdoch, threw out the first pitch. Bill Singer
(16-12) took the hill for Hollywood, hoping to extend the Stars’ 1-0 series lead. Rats righty Ray Culp (13-13) had other
ideas.
Flushing struck first blood in the top of the second. Hot-hitting Leon “Daddy Wags” Wagner singled with one out, then
raced home on a triple by Bert Campaneris. Cookie Rojas brought in Campy with a sac fly, and it was 2-0, Flushing. Lou
Brock’s speed gave the Rats another run in the fifth. The Flushing leadoff man singled, stole second, raced to third on
Tony Perez’ flyout, and then romped home on another flyball by Carl Yastzemski.
While the Stars threatened several times, they couldn’t dent the scoreboard against Culp, who took the 3-0 lead into the
bottom of the eighth. Then the game abruptly turned around. Cleon Jones led off the frame with double, then scored
Hollywood’s first run of the game one out later on a single by Ken Boswell. The Stars were just getting warmed up. A
single by Reggie Smith and a walk by Tom Haller loaded the bases. Tom “The Blade” Hall then took over for Culp, and
pinch-hitter Ken Berry promptly tied the score with a single up the middle that plated Boswell and Smith. After Jim
Fregosi singled to again load the bases, Bobby Bolin replaced Hall. Aurelio Rodriguez then gave Hollywood the lead
with a sac fly that drove home Haller. Ron Taylor quickly set down the Rats in the ninth, yielding only a two-out single
to Lee Thomas. Just like that, the clubs headed east with Hollywood holding a two-games-to-none lead.

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 3
Game 3 at Shea Stadium was a cool 58 degrees with clear skies but a brisk 18mph wind blowing in from center field.
Not good conditions for the hitters in this pitcher-friendly field. Mel Stottlmyre (12-13, 3.05) gets the start for
the Stars, while Chuck Dobson (17-14, 2.98) gets the nod for the Rats.
The wind certainly didn’t affect Roy White, as he belted a leadoff homer to deep left on the second pitch of the
game. After Boswell struck out, Reggie Smith walked. Tom Haller then forced Smith at second. Willie Smith singled
Haller to third and Jim Fregosi walked to load the bases. Aurelio Rodriguez grounded out to end the threat. The
Rats scored twice in the bottom half of the first (so much for the pitching-friendly park theory!). Tony Perez and
Carl Yastrzmski singled. With two outs, Johnny Bench singled home Perez. Then Leon “Daddy Wags” Wagner singled home
Yaz to give the Rats a 2-1 lead. With one out in the second, Stottlmyre walked, then Roy White singled him to third.
Ken Boswell’s single to center scored Stottlmyre to tie the game at 2.
Well, that’s where the score remained until the bottom of the 14th inning! Chuck Dobson was pulled with two outs in
the 5th after issuing his 6th walk of the game. Not taking any chances, the Rats brought in Pete Mikkelsen, who pitched
out of the jam. After Mikkelsen, the Rats used Tony Pierce, Lew Krausse, Bill Kelso and Dave Baldwin, and gave up only
3 hits and 1 walk over the final 9.1 innings. Stottlmyre pitched 8 solid innings, then gave way to Doc Ellis. Ellis
pitched 2 scoreless innings, then Ron Taylor came in for 3 scoreless innings. There were a few threats along the way
by the Rats (bases loaded, 1 out in the 6th, Bubba Morton thrown out at home (Reggie Smith to Fregosi to Haller) in
the 13th trying to score from first on Bench’s double).
The game ended in the bottom of the 14th. With one out, lite-hitting Dick Tracewski (0-4 with 3 Ks in the game coming
into this at bat) singled to center. Lou Brock flied out for the second out. Then Perez reached first base on Julian
Javier’s error, sending Tracewski to 2nd. Yaz then stroked a single to right center, scoring Tracewski for the win.

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 4
Game 4 at Shea Stadium was a little warmer at 62 degrees, clear with a slight breeze of 4mph in from right field.
Bob Gibson (24-6, 1.65) started his second game of the series for the Stars, and Bobby Bolin (8-10, 2.48) started
for the Rats.
For the second game in a row, Roy White led off the game with a home run, deep down the right field line! This
game quickly became a pitchers duel, as there were few scoring threats (Rats had runners on first and third with
two outs in the 2nd…that’s about it!). Both Gibson and Bolin traded zeros until the bottom of the 8th inning.
That’s when “super sub” Joe Keough led off with a pinch-hit single. After Gibson whiffed Lee Thomas, Lou Brock
beat out an infield hit, moving Keough to 2nd base. On a botched hit-and-run by Tony Perez, the Rats managed a
double steal, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Perez then atoned for his goof by lining a SAC fly to left, sending
Brock to 3rd base. With a chance to take the lead, Carl Yastrzmski disappoints the home crowd by grounding out to
third.
Roy White seems to find a way on base every time he leads off an inning! This time, on an error by Bert Campaneris,
another uncharacteristic error by the Rats, who tied for the league lead in fielding percentage and least errors
during the regular season. There was no doubt this error would be costly. Ken Berry, pinch hitting for Gibson, laid
down a surprise bunt, sending White to 2nd base. Reggie “Barry Bonds” Smith then doubled deep to left, scoring White
for a 2-1 lead.
Lindy McDaniel came in to pitch the 9th inning for the Stars, and quickly earned the save, striking out Leon Wagner to
end the game. Gibson did not get a decision for the 2nd start in a row, but pitched great (7.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks,
8 Ks, 1 run). Bolin was more than equal to the task and would win 9 out of 10 times with his performance (8 innings,
3 hits, 0 walks, 6 Ks, 1 run), but not against the well-oiled machine that is the Hollywood Stars!
The Stars now hold a commanding 3 games to 1 lead over the Rats in the 1968 World Series! On to game 5…

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 5
Game 5 at Shea Stadium was a chilly 54 degrees, with the wind blowing in from center field at 10mph. Ray Sadecki
(13-12, 3.53) gets the start for the Stars, while Gaylord Perry (27-7, 1.92) gets his second start of the series
for the Rats.
In a must-win game for the Rats, the controversial decision to give ace Gaylord Perry an extra day off now seems
to be a great move! Unfortunately, Roy White once again causes problems, getting on base on ANOTHER Rats error by
first baseman Ernie Banks (BTW, if you weren’t checking, Banks led the league in fielding in the regular season,
making only 3 errors!). However, Perry got out of the inning without any further damage. Both pitchers settled into
a good grove, allowing a sprinkling of base runners over the first 3 innings.
The Stars struck the first blow, when Jim Fregosi (another tough out) tripled home Cleon Jones, who had singled with
two outs. The Rats quickly anted up and raised the stakes in the bottom of the 4th. Carl Yastrzmski led off with a
double to right center. With one out, Johnny Bench doubled down the first base line, scoring Yaz. Bubba Morton then
singled home Bench for a 2-1 Rats lead.
The Rats score again in the 5th inning. Brock singles , steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a Tony Perez ground out. Now
with 2 outs, Yaz singles home Brock. Ernie Banks singles to right center, sending Yaz to 3rd base. Bench then doubles
to deep left center (his 2nd double today and 6th of the series) to score Yaz and send Banks to 3rd base. Morton then
grounded out, but the Rats now have a 4-1 lead with Perry in stride.
The Stars would not threaten again with Perry allowing just a single to Fregosi in the 7th. The Rats would score again
in the 7th on Morton’s single that scored Tony Perez. The rats score the final run of the game in the 8th on Perez’s
SAC fly, scoring Cookie Rojas.
Gaylord Perry finished what he started (9 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk, 4 Ks, 1run). The Stars still lead the series, 3 games
to 2.

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 6
It was amazing… it was unforgettable… it was one of the greatest games in baseball history… or one of the worst, depending
on your point of view. It was Game 6 of the 1968 World Series, a battle that figures to go down in league annals as one of
the best ever.
Looking to wrap up the series and bring Southern California a championship, the Hollywood Stars took the field holding a
three-games-to-two lead over the visiting Flushing Rats. The Stars pulled out all the stops in the pregame festivities:
California governor Ronald Reagan threw out the first pitch, and “The Chairman of the Board,” Frank Sinatra, turned his
back on his East Coast roots with a stirring version of the National Anthem.
The game featured a rematch between Game 2 starters Ray Culp (Rats) and Bill Singer (Stars). After Singer set down the
Rats in the top of the first, Flushing’s defense—a problem all series—betrayed them yet again in the bottom half when a
two-base throwing error by shortstop Bert Campaneris put Stars leadoff man Roy White on second. White took third on a
flyout to center; then, after the Rats intentionally walked dangerous Reggie Smith, the Stars grabbed the lead on a fielders’
choice grounder by Tom Haller. Hustling down the line, the Stars’ catcher just beat Flushing’s attempt to turn an inning-ending
double play. Hollywood then made it 2-0 in the third. Fred Whitfield led off with a walk, took third on a two-out single by
White and then scored on line single to left by Julian Javier.
Meanwhile “The Singer Throwing Machine” was looking like he might do a lot a more than just win the series clincher. Singer
was perfect threw four innings, and though he finally permitted a baserunner with a four-pitch walk to Bubba Morton in the
bottom of the fifth, he kept his no-hitter intact by retiring Ernie Banks and Bert Campaneris to end the inning. But the
no-hitter—and Singer—blew up in the sixth. After retiring Cookie Rojas to start the inning, Singer walked pinch-hitter
Joe Keough. Lou Brock then singled for the first Flushing hit of the game. Singer got Tony Perez to hit into a forceout,
but then gave up a single to Carl Yastrzemski (plating Keough) and an infield hit to Johnny Bench that loaded the bases.
Thoroughly rattled by now, Singer threw a wild pitch that tied the score and then walked Bubba Morton to load the bases
again. Lindy McDaniel then came in and ended the threat by striking out Ernie Banks, but it was a 2-2 ballgame.
The Stars broke the tie off Flushing reliever Lew Krausse in the seventh on a pinch-single by Jose Tartabull, another
single by Roy White, a Ken Berry pinch-sacrifice, and—after an intentional walk to Reggie Smith—a fielders-choice grounder
by pinch-hitter Andy Etchebarren off new pitcher Tom Hall. They extended the lead to 4-2 off Bobby Bolin in the bottom of
the eighth when Cleon Jones singled, took second on a Wes Parker sacrifice, and then came home on single to center by Ken
Boswell.
The Stars were now three outs away from a title, and lefthander Darold Knowles came in finish things off. He got the
dangerous Leon Wagner, leading off, to hit a grounder to short, but Jim Fregosi (42 errors on the season) sailed his
throw into the first-base stands, nearly decapitating Stars rooter Bob Hope and putting Wags on second. Unperturbed,
Knowles quickly got Campaneris to ground out and Cookie Rojas to pop out to Etchebarren. All that stood between the
Stars and a title now was pinch-hitter Ron Brand, who had batted .091 on the season. But Knowles hit Brand with an inside
fastball and when another weak hitter, Jim Gosger (.209 on the year), singled to left, the lead was down to 4-3 with the
tying run on third.
Stars manager Don Zminda had righty and Game 3 winner Mel Stottlemyre warming up in the bullpen, but in a move that raised
eyebrows all-around, brought in southpaw Danny Coombs to pitch to the righty-swinging Tony Perez. “I didn’t like Stot in a
relief role, so I told Coombs to pitch around Perez if he needed to and then get Yaz,” offered the Zee Man after the game.
Before you could say “Gene Mauch,” Coombs had walked Perez to load the bases and then given up a two-run single to
Yastzemski that stunningly put the Rats ahead. The Stars now completely fell apart, and by the time the dust had cleared,
six Rats had crossed the plate. The Stars went down meekly in the bottom of the ninth, and rather then drinking champagne,
the Stars faced a Game 7 against a fired-up Rats team that had all the momentum as they tried to complete a comeback from
a three-games-to-one series deficit. Asked what his plans were if the Stars lost Game 7 as well, Zminda shrugged and said,
“I hear the Beverly Hills post office is hiring.”

SPB1-1968 WS GAME 7
This was it… Game 7 between the visiting Flushing Rats and the hometown Hollywood Stars, with a World Series title on
the line. On the heels of a ninth-inning collapse in Game 6 that could only be labeled as “choking,” the Stars turned
to Mr. Lucky, longtime season-ticket holder Cary Grant, to throw out the first pitch, and Jim Morrison of The Doors lit
everyone’s fire with a passionate version of the National Anthem.
With both pitching staffs worn to a nub by a frantic first six games, the Rats had little choice but to go Chuck Dobson,
who’d been shaky in Game 3, as their seventh game starter. The Stars had a well-rested Mel Stottlemyre as a Game 7
possibility, but their choice was basically a no-brainer. “It’s Gibson,” said skipper Don Zminda, turning to his ace
for the third time in the series.
Though he’d pitched well in Games 1 and 4, Bob Gibson had yet to record a victory in the series, and he was constantly
pitching out of jams in the early innings of Game 7. All Gibby asked for was “a little cushion,” and the Stars
immediately gave him one in the bottom of the first. Leadoff man Roy White singled, No. 2 hitter Jose Tartabull did
the same, and then the Stars’ top clutch hitter all season, Reggie Smith, made the crowd go wild by blasting a three-run
homer into the right-field pavilion. The Stars made it 4-0 in the second when Julian Javier doubled and White singled him
home. Despite facing constant threats, Gibson held the Rats scoreless through the first five innings, nursing that
four-run lead.
The Rats finally got on the board in the sixth when Tony Perez singled, went to second on a groundout and then came
home on a single by Ernie Banks. The Rats had men on first and third with one out, but Gibson escaped again, getting
Bubba Morton to hit into a double play. The Stars got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Smith singled, took
second on a Jim Fregosi sacrifice and then scored on Fred Whitfield’s first hit of the series.
It was still 5-1 entering the eighth, but Gibson was finally running out of gas. When Lou Brock led off the inning with
a double, Hollywood brought in its most reliable reliever, Ron Taylor. Pitching in his fifth game of the series, Taylor
was weary as well, giving up a single to Tony Perez that scored Brock and then another single to Carl Yastrzemski that
sent Perez to third. Yaz came home on an Ernie Banks grounder to make it 5-3, but Taylor escaped further damage, retiring
Johnny Bench and Bubba Morton on flyouts. The Stars got one of the runs back in the last of the eighth when Fregosi and
Wes Parker singled, with Fregosi racing home after Bert Campaneris booted a Ken Boswell grounder… yet another defensive
lapse by the Rats, who were plagued by poor fielding throughout the series.
It was now 6-3 Stars with three outs to go, but after blowing a two-run lead with two out in the ninth inning of Game 6,
Stars fans were anything but secure. (Actually, many had gone home after the seventh inning, keeping a longstanding
Hollywood tradition. ) Those that remained got even more nervous when Bert Campaneris led off the ninth with a stinging
single. Stars manager Don Zminda, who had been roasted by the LA press for his bullpen choices in Game 6, now set tongues
wagging by bringing in his only available lefthander, Jim Brewer, to face the three left-handed hitters the Rats had
coming to the plate. Brewer had been torched by the Stars in the ninth inning of Game 6, and his shaky regular-season
work (5.26 ERA) had reduced him to the role of mopup man after the first third of the season. “Talk about a roll of
the dice!” mused Stars broadcaster Vin Scully. But with many fans afraid to look and others scurrying for the exits,
Brewer got Lee Thomas to ground out, struck out the dangerous Leon Wagner and then got Lou Brock on a liner to right
fielder Ken Berry, with “The Bandit” making a fine running catch. Victory! Tinseltown was TitleTown, and an amazing
season for the Stars had its storybook ending at last.
