Frankfort Tigers vs. Flushing Rats
SPB1-1971 ALCS GAME 1
The 1971 American League Championship Series opened at Shea Stadium on October 3rd, 1971.
Game time temperature was 64 degrees, with clear skies and a 10 mph breeze from right field
to left. The Tigers sent Bill Hands (22-5, 2.89) to the mound to face the Rats’ Tom Seaver
(24-6, 1.57).
Neither team could get anything going early against these two aces. However, after retiring
13 batters in a row, Hands served up a 2-out solo home run to Joe Hague. The Rats added a
second run in the bottom of the 6th. Lou Brock doubled with one out, and scampered to third
on Ron Theobald’s infield hit. Amos Otis brought home Brock with a single up the middle.
All the while, Seaver was finding ways to keep the Tigers from scoring, although he gave them
plenty of chances. The Tigers finally got to Seaver in the 8th. Paul Blair reached on an
infield hit, sandwiched between two strikeouts. Dick McAuliffe then dropped a triple to deep
center, scoring Blair. After an intentional walk, Seaver got Bill Freehan to fly out harmlessly
to center. After a scoreless 8th for the Rats, the Tigers had one more shot at Seaver in the
9th. Johnny Callison doubled with one out, his third hit of the game. After a long visit to
the mound, the Rats manager decided to leave Seaver in to finish what he started. Seaver
obliged and buckled-down to get the final two outs for the complete-game victory.
Bill Hands pitched a fine game, allowing only 5 hits and 0 walks in 7 innings. Seaver allowed
9 base runners, struck out 9 and threw 142 pitches! However, the Tigers left 8 runners on base,
which was the difference in this ball game, a 2-1 Rats victory.
Game two probable starters are Bill Parsons (19-9, 2.88) for the Tigers and Gaylord Perry
(20-9, 2.16) for the Rats.

SPB1-1971 ALCS GAME 2
Game two of the 1971 American League Championship Series at Shea Stadium was delayed
80 minutes due to a rain delay, and the entire game was played under threatening skies.
Game time temperature was 61 degrees, with a 15 mph breeze out to right field. The
Tigers sent Bill Parsons (19-9, 2.88) to the mound, and the Rats countered with Gaylord
Perry (20-9, 2.16).
For the second game in a row, the Rats scored first in the 5th inning on a solo home
run, this one by Dave May. However, hat was it for the scoring, as both starters pitched
complete games under less-than-desirable conditions. Perry struck out 8 (including Norm
Cash 3 times), and allowed only 4 base runners on two hits and two walks, and only allowed
one runner to reach as far as second base. Parsons scattered 7 hits and 1 walk, and except
for the mistake pitch thrown to May, he pitched a great game (only 85 pitches in 8 innings of work).
The Rats now lead the best-of-5 series 2 games to 0. With their backs against the wall,
the Tigers have to win the final three games in a row to take the series. Rats’ fans recall
a similar situation last year. The Rats held a 3-games-to-1 lead against the Stars in the
1970 World Series, only to see their team drop the final three games to lose the series!
Will history repeat itself?
Game three probable starters are Ray Culp (13-11, 2.61) for the Rats and Gary Gentry
(18-9, 3.38) for the Tigers.

SPB1-1971 ALCS GAME 3
The 1971 American League Championship Series moved to Tiger Stadium, where game 3 was
played under cloudy skies. Game time temperature was 58 degrees, and there was a slight
breeze of 6mph blowing in from right field. The Rats handed the start to Ray Culp
(13-11, 2.61), while Gary Gentry (18-9, 3.38) got the nod for the Tigers.
Unlike the first two games, there was some early scoring, as the Rats jumped out to a
1-0 lead in the 2nd. With two outs, Bert Campaneris singled and stole 2nd base.
Joe Hague’s single plated Campaneris for the first run. The Rats struck again in the
3rd with another 2-out rally. Amos Otis walked and stole 2nd base. Tony Perez drove
Otis home with a single. Culp was cruising along at this time, allowing only 3 singles
in the first four innings. But then the Tigers struck quickly. Ken McMullen lead off
the 5th with a single, and Johnny Callison drove him home with a 2-run home run. The
game remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the 7th. McMullen again lead off the inning
with a hit, this time it was a solo home run to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead, their first
lead of the series. That would be all the Tigers needed, as Jack Aker pitched two perfect
innings to save the game for Gentry.
The Rats lead was cut in half, 2 games to 1. Has the momentum changed?
Game four probable starters should be a repeat of game 1, with Tom Seaver (24-6, 1.57)
for the Rats and Bill Hands (22-5, 2.89) for the Tigers.

SPB1-1971 ALCS GAME 4
Game time temperature for game four of the 1971 American League Championship Series was
60 degrees. Skies were partly cloudy, and there was a brisk breeze of 12mph out to right
field. The Rats decided to give Tome Seaver an extra day off since he threw 142 pitches
in his complete-game effort in game 1, so George Stone (13-6, 2.64) was handed the reigns.
Even though Bill Hands was the Tiger’s workhorse all season, Ken Forsch (12-9, 2.65) had
great numbers all season for the Tigers and was given the start.
For the first time this series, the Tigers got on the board first. Jim Hickman lead off
the 2nd inning with a home run. Then the Tigers added to their lead in the 4th with another
solo home run, Ken McMullen’s 2nd home run in 2 games. The Tigers scored again in the 7th
to knock out Stone and force the Rats to go to their bullpen for the first time in the series.
McMullen lead off the 7th with a double, another big hit leading off an inning for Ken. Rich
Morales then hit a double of his own, scoring McMullen and sending Stone to the showers.
Pete Mikkelsen relieved Stone, and promptly struck out the next three hitters. At this point,
Forsch was cruising with a 3-0 lead, heading into the 8th.
Lou Brock singled with one out in the 8th. Ron Theobald then singled, and brock scampered
around to 3rd base. Fred Gladding came in the game, and served up a single to Amos Otis,
scoring Brock. Gladding settled down, getting Tony Perez on a pop up and Dave May on a
ground out to end the threat.
Bobby Bolin pitched a perfect 8th for the Rats. With Gladding still on the mound, Johnny
Bench lead off the 9th with a single. Bert Campaneris walked, but was erased at 2b on a
ground out by Joe Hague, sending Bench to 3rd. Curt Flood, pinch-hitting for Bolin, plated
Bench with a Sac Fly to left. With two outs and a runner on first, Lou Brock ended the rally
and the game with a ground out force to short.
The series was then tied at 2 games each, a scenario that nobody on the Rats payroll, or their
fans, wanted to see! Game five promises to be an exciting finish to this close series (all
4 games were decided by 1 run).
This time, game five probable starters should definitely be a repeat of game 1, with Tom Seaver
(24-6, 1.57) for the Rats and Bill Hands (22-5, 2.89) for the Tigers.

SPB1-1971 ALCS GAME 5October 8, 1971; Game five of the 1971 American League Championship Series. Skies were clear with a steady wind of 17mph out to right field, and the temperature was a seasonable 58 degrees. As expected, both teams brought their Aces to the table. The Rats looked for another solid effort from game 1 winner Tom Seaver (24-6, 1.57), while the Tigers hoped that Bill Hands (22-5, 2.89) could repeat his game 1 performance, only with a W attached to his stat line. Seaver and Hands are both at top form after two innings. Seaver allowed just a single, and Hands was perfect. Then in the top of the 3rd, Bert Campaneris lead off with a single and stole second. Cepeda then drove him home with a single. After a sac bunt by Seaver, Hands settled down and got the final two batters. The Rats added to their early lead in the 4th. Amos Otis lead off with a double and reached 3rd base on Tony Perez’s ground out. Then Dave May had the big blow of the game, a 2-run home run down the right field line, giving Seaver a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead. But the Rats have been down this road before, and no lead could ever be safe. After a lead-off strikeout in t he bottom of the 4th, Seaver lost focus, and loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, sandwiched around a fly out. Then in a dramatic at-bat by Elrod Hendricks, Seaver picked up the strikeout on a full count pitch. A lead-off infield single by Seaver was enough for the Tiger’s manager, and Hands was replaced by Ron Bryant. Bryant quickly erased the runner on a double-play groundout by Lou Brock, and then struck out Dick Green to end the inning. Neither team threatened much until the 7th, where Johnny Bench led off the top half of the inning with a home run. John Strohmayer then retired the next three batters. The Rats never really threatened to score again, thanks to Tigers’ twin-killings in the 8th and 9th. Seaver, meanwhile, continued to “cruise” through the Tigers lineup, although it seemed he went to a full count on every batter (actually 10 of the 34 batter’s he faced battled to a full count). So, with those stats, Seaver went into the 9th with 140 pitches already thrown. The Rat’s manager struggled with the decision to yank Seaver, but once again let the ace do what he does. It paid off, as Seaver three tough outs in Ken McMullen, Johnny Callison and Elrod Hendricks to earn the shutout victory, on 152 pitches! McMullen and Callison were the top 2 hitters for the Tigers this series, so this was no easy task for Seaver. The Rats are the 1971 AL Champs, defeating the Tigers in a close, tense, well-played 5-game series. The first 4 games were all decided by 1 run each. There were a lot of home runs hit, compared to the low amount of runs scored. The Rats hit 4 home runs and scored just 11 runs, while the Tigers scored but 7 runs to go along with their 4 home runs. The series MVP goes to Tom Seaver. He pitched two complete games, one a shutout, and was 2-0 with 19 strikeouts. Gaylord Perry came close with his one complete-game shutout (only allowing 4 base runners).
