Ashville Tourists vs. Las Vegas Thunder
SPB1-1971 NLCS GAME 1
Game One is at Asheville with the Tourists starting Ferguson Jenkins (18 and 8) against
the terror of the Thunder, Vida Blue (27 and 5)
Jenkins takes care of the Thunder (Carew, Belanger & Reggie) for a quick opening at
bat........but Vida does likewise against Alomar, Cash, & Billings.......second inning
is a repeat of the first for the Thunder as Scott, Nettles and Cedeno go down
quickly.......but the Tourists break the pattern after Vida gets Bonds and Foster out,
as Felipe Alou works him for a walk.......only to be cut down by Munson as he tries
stealing 2nd.
In the third it is another one, two, three for the Thunder (Clines, Munson, and
Blue).......meanwhile the Tourists raise a little dust and get the first runner into
scoring position with one out (Kranepool), Michael singles, Jenkins flies out to center
and then Alomar singles moving Michael to second.....Dave Cash hits a routine fly to left
and the rally is over.
First base runner for the Thunder in the fourth as Belanger singles with one out, Reggie
then whiffs, Stick Michael boots a grounder by Scott.......then an infield single by Nettles
and the bases are loaded......Cedeno grounds sharply to Kranepool who steps on first for the
unassisted third out. Tourists fans start breathing again.......Billings leads off our fourth
with a single, but is thrown out at 2nd on Bonds grounder.......Carew throws it away trying
to double up Bonds and the error allows Bonds to get to second. Neither Foster nor Alou can
bring him home and the score remains tied at goose eggs thru four.
With one out, Munson draws a walk from Jenkins to start the Thunder fifth.....he is quickly
moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Blue.....Carew again makes things dicey as he gets an
infield single moving Munson to third with two out.......Belanger walks on a full count
pitch......and Reggie whiffs again on a full count pitch. Tourists fans once again start
breathing......with two out in bottom of fifth Asheville gets a single by Fergie before Alomar
grounds out. After five it is still zip to zippola.
One, Two, Three for Fergie in the sixth with no Thunder (or lightning).......with two out in
bottom of the sixth, Blue walks Bonds......throws a wild pitch allowing Bonds to move to second,
Foster walks on Blues 9th straight bad pitch. Carew is having trouble in the field today as he
makes second error on Alou's grounder and Asheville now has the bases full with Kranepool up........a
weak grounder to Carew ends the threat.......after six.....NO SCORE.....
With two out in top of the seventh, Rick Miller is brought in to pinch hit for Blue, and he drives
a double down the third base line.....Carew grows out to Cash at third to end the threat..........Jerry
Johnson comes in to pitch for the Thunder and with one out the Tourists also lift their pitcher for
a pinch hitter, Valdespino.....he strikes out, followed by a single by Alomar and a single by
Cash.......only problem is Alomar is cut down at third by Cedeno......Tourist fans are not pleased
with that baserunning decision........after 7, zero to zero......
Steve Mingori comes in to pitch for Asheville and with one out, he gives up a single to Reggie who
is forced out at second by a Scott grounder (fielders choice).....a Billings passed ball moves Scott
to second before Foster strikes out........Tourists go down one, two and three..........game still
scoreless after 8........
With one out in top of the 9th, the Thunder get a man on base with Clines single, Egan comes in to
pinch hit for Munson and it pays off for the Thunder as he singles moving Cline to third.......North
pinch hits for Johnson.....he grounds one to Cash who throws out Cline at home....Egan moves to second
and North to first......Carew ends the threat for the Thunder with a long fly to center.........McGraw
comes in to pitch for Las Vegas and Egan is his battery mate.........with two outs, Michael works
McGraw for a walk and Bando comes in to pinch hit for Mingori......a pop out to third (Nettles) is
a fizzle for the Tourists and we end regulation play with no runs no where.
Giusti is now pitching for the Tourists and with one out, he walks Reggie, AND then walks Scott, AND
THEN walks Nettles to load the bases......Cedeno brings home the first and lead run for the Thunder
as he hits a sacrifice fly to center.......the pain continues as Clines singles to right with Scott
roaring around to score and Nettles stopping at third. Clines then steals second before Egan strikes
out to end the Thunder reign of terror in the tenth.
Tourists come to bat against McGraw in bottom of the tenth......down by two runs.......Alomar leads
off with a single and the fans have their rally caps on........Cash follows with a single that moves
Alomar to third......Billings singles to right center with Alomar scoring the run for the Tourists
while Cash dashes to third........with runners on at the corners McGraw uncorks a wild pitch that
allows Cash to score and tie up the game AND Billings makes it to second.......Beauchamp is brought
in to pinch run for Billings with Bonds at the plate.....Bonds is walked intentionally. George Foster
faces McGraw with the potential winning run on second......on the first pitch George scalds a double
down the third base line driving in Beauchamp with the third and winning run for Asheville.
WP - Giusti
LP - McGraw
only two extra base hits, doubles by Miller and Foster.

SPB1-1971 NLCS GAME 2
Stadium is buzzing before game two as the starting pitchers have been
announced........the home Tourists are going to go with Ron Reed who was 14
and 13 for the season.......he will be matched by the Thunder's Catfish Hunter
who was 15 and 14 for the season......
In the first Reed is in full control getting Carew, Belanger, and Reggie rather
quickly......same song somewhat in bottom of the first with Cash leading off with a
single, but being doubled up on Alomar's groundout, then Foster walks and Bonds grounds
out......so the local fans are claiming to have momentum on their side......
After Scott grounds out to start the second, Nettles doubles and MO has moved to the
other dugout, but Reed gets Cedeno to pop out to left and Clines to loft a lazy fly to
center......Alou singles to lead off the Tourists second and after getting Bando and Roof,
Alou is on second ......Kranepool is walked intentionally and Reed finishes the inning with
a weak fly to right.
Munson, Hunter and Carew are quickly returned to the bench and field in the third........after
one out in bottom of the third, Alomar singles and steals second before Foster strikes
out......Bonds drives in the first run of the game with a single to center and Alou moves
him to third with a single before Bando whiffs. after three: Thunder 0 and Tourists 1.
one, two, three for Reed again in top of the fourth......he seems to be fully zoned in to
his game.........with one out Kranepool gets a double, and with two down, Cash is walked......Alomar
then singles but the Tourists hold up the heavy-footed Kranepool at third......Foster ends the
rally by striking out.......no change in the score. one to nothing in favor of the hometown Tourists.
With two down in top of the fifth Clines singles to get the Thunder fans into the game and he
promptly steals second, but Munson can only ground out to end the rally.......with one out in
bottom of fifth Alou doubles, but Hunter strikes out Bando and gets Roof to fly out....
....Tourists 1 and Thunder 0
Hunter starts his own rally in top of the 6th with a single to left, but Reed easily takes care
of the next three Thunder bats.........in bottom of 6th Kranepool leads off for Asheville with a
single and is sacrificed to second by Reed. Cash works Hunter for a walk and Alomar is welcomed
with a wild pitch that moves Cash and Kranepool up to 2nd and 3rd. Some discussion on the mound
and they decide to pitch to Alomar.......he homers to deep right center and the Tourists go up by
four in the 6th.........after Foster strikes out, Bonds works a walk........Mike Marshall is
brought in to relieve Catfish Hunter and get Alou to line out to Carew to end the Tourist rally.
Reed is still on track in the 7th as he gets a ground out, walks Nettles and gets Cedeno to hit
into a double play........following two strikeouts by Marshall, Kranepool doubles again but Reed
grounds out and after seven innings the Tourists lead 4 to 0........
Jim Holt replaces Alou in left to start the 8th and Clines strikes out before Munson starts a
Thunder rally with a single. North pinch hits for Marshall and flies out. Carew singles moving
Munson to third. Rick Miller pinch hits for Belange and doubles to right.......Munson scores and
Carew holds up at third......Reggie is walked intentionally.....Scott ends the rally by grounding
out. In the bottom of the 8th, Ken Wright takes the mound for Las Vegas and Concepcion takes on
the shortstop role........Wright dispatches the Tourists quickly. After eight, Thunder 1 and
Tourists 4......
Reed is back on the mound to start the 9th.....he will face Nettles, Cedeno and Clines.......two
ground outs bracketing a soft fly to center.........and Asheville is up in the series, two games
to one.

SPB1-1971 NLCS GAME 3
Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Thunder returned home down 2 games to none, but the fans in
Vegas were on their feet as Wilbur Wood took the mound to face Ashville's Sam McDowell.
The Tourists wasted little time in jumping on the board first in the first inning when Dick
Billings doubled and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Mr. October. He scoreed on the
next play on a ground out by Sal Bando, 1-0 Tourists.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the 4th inning, when the silent Thunder bats
come alive. Blade Belanger lead off the inning with a clean single off McDowell, then advanced
to 2b on a walk by Reggie. Cesar Cedeno stepped to the plate "guns a blazin" and launched a 3
run shot to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead.
In the 6th inning, with McDowell still on the mound, Joe Rudi smacked a 1 out single. Sam, seeming
to be a little flustered, uncorks a wild pitch, advancing Joe to 2b. The next batter Nettles drew
a walk, but things looked bad when Thurman Munson flew out to left for the second out, advancing Rudi
to 3rd with two down. Unfortunately, that brought pitcher Wood to the plate, but the Thunder manager
felt it was way too early to yank Wood, and let him swing. McDowell proceeded to walk the light hitting
Wilbur, and became visibly upset; bringing out Tourists manager Rich Applegate. Appelgate appeared to
calm down McDowell, but this time it was catcher Dick Billings who let McDowell down, with a passed ball,
that allowed Rudi to score from 3rd, and gave the Thunder a 4-1 lead.
The Tourists got a run back in the top of the 7th, on a HR by Felipe Alou, but Wood settled down, and
blew through the rest of the lineup, giving the Thunder a 4-2 win, and some life in the series.

SPB1-1971 NLCS GAME 4
Las Vegas, NV - The Thunder backs are still against the wall heading into game 4, as Don
Wilson faced Gary Peters in a game that might go down as one of the wildest games in SPB-1's
brief LCS history, one that saw a record 6 for 6 hitting performance, and the second extra
inning game of the series.
Once again, the hot bats of the Tourists struck first in the 1st. After leadoff man Dave
Cash walked, Sandy Alomar lined a single, moving Cash to third. George Foster then slapped
an RBI ground out to give Ashville a 1-0 lead. Wilson, seemed a bit shell shocked and didn't
pay attention to the fleet footed Alomar at 2b, and Sandy promptly stole 3rd. It paid off, as
Bonds grounded out, scoring Sandy and gave the visiting Tourists a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder struck back in the 3rd inning, when Rod Carew smashed a lead off double, and advanced
to 3rd on a sac fly. Reggie Jackson then hit an RBI ground out, scoring the speedy Carew, giving
the Thunder and their fans some life back, but the Tourists still led 2-1.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the 6th, when Graig Nettles laced a 1 out triple
off of Peters. Catcher Tom Egan proceeded to score Nettles with an RBI single, tying the game at
two as the Thunder fans went crazy with their Thunder Stix!!! With pitcher Don Wilson at the plate,
Thunder manager See decided to lay down a bunt, and it worked to perfection, advancing Egan to 2b.
The Tourists chose to face the red hot Carew with 1b open and Carew made them pay, with another RBI
single and the Thunder had a lead 3-2.
The game headed into the eighth inning, and with Wilson cruising, the Thunder decided to stick with
him rather than go into their suddenly inconsistent bullpen. But Wilson suddenly ran out of gas.
After a Bonds strikeout, Alou laced a double. "The Captain" Sal Bando then followed with a single
scoring Alou. C Phil Roof then stepped to the plate and cracked a double, scoring Bando. and just
like that, the Tourists were up 4-3, and were 6 outs away from the World Series.
With Don McMahon now in the game, the Thunder Stix were roaring, and the theme from SHAFT started to
blare from the rafters. After a groundout by Rudi, Graig Nettles singled. Applegate, not wanting to
take any chances, immediately went to the pen for his closer Dave Giusti. Giusti proceeded to walk
Tom Egan putting runners at first and second with 1 out. Thunder manager See brought up rookie PH
sensation Billy North, and North did not disappoint the fans as he lined a single to left, scoring
Nettles and knotting the game at 4-4!
After a scoreless 9th, the game went into extra innings again! In the top of the 11th, Tourists 2b
Sandy Alomar lined a base hit, his 6th of the game, setting an LCS record, however the game stayed
4-4 until the top of the 12th and Ashville completely sucked the life out of Thunder Field, when
Sal Bando CRUSHED a Tug McGraw pitch into the left field bleachers, and put the Tourists 3 outs
away from the World Series.
The bottom of the 12th came and the Thunder players and fans all dawned their rally caps, in hopes
that Mr. October Reggie Jackson could save the day as he had done all season. Rich Robertson
struck Reggie out. 2 outs away.
George Scott stepped to the plate and after a quick 2 strikes, managed to squib a punch and judy
single up the middle. The tying run was now on base.
Cesar Cedeno, showing his future potential in this series, blasted a double, but Scott, who has
the speed of a filing cabinet, could not score, and their were runners on first and second with
one out. Applegate huddled on the mound with his pitcher and infield, and decided to face Joe Rudi.
All 46,454 fans were on there feet, Robertson uncorked a fastball to Rudi and Mr. Clutch lined a
single to deep left center score Scott, scoring Cedeno, and the Thunder had a miracle come from
behind 6-5 victory to force Game 5 in a winner take all match up, Vida Blue against Fergie Jenkins.

SPB1-1971 NLCS GAME 5
Las Vegas, NV - The 108 Win Thunder had battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a Game 5,
and now had a well rested ace in 27 game winner Vida Blue, facing the equally tough
Fergie Jenkins.
It was a brisk October day in Vegas, with game time temperatures around 45 degrees and
a cool desert breeze blowing around 11 mph. Know this was easily the biggest game in
the history of this franchise, See wanted to make sure he got someone good to toss of the
first pitch, and with the fans on the edge of there seat, out from the bullpen come running
none other than Elvis Aaron Presley (straight from his show at the International) to the
tunes of Jailhouse Rock! Needless to say the crown was fired up!
Most expected a pitchers duel in this game five, and a pitchers duel they got.
Once again, as they have done for the entire series, the Tourists struck first in the 3rd
inning, The Stick Michael reached second on a two base error by the normally slick fielding
Mark Belanger. Fergie Jenkins sac'd him to third and the red hot Sandy Alomar hit a sac fly
to score him and gave the Tourists a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder held the Tourists scoreless in the top of the 4th, and up to the plate in the
bottom of the 4th stepped Mr. October Reggie Jackson, who had not much looked the part in
this series.
Once again, Fergie quickly had Reggie in the hole 1-2. But the Thunder fans were on their
feet once again, clapping their Thunder Stix, and on Fergie’s next pitch, Reggie put all
of his might into Fergie's best fastball and put it into the second deck in RF, and took
a long slow stroll around the bases. Game tied 1-1.
Vida and Fergie continued to duel and both pitched a scoreless 5th. Vida continued his
dominance, pitching a scoreless 6th.
In the bottom of the 6th, Fergie retired Mark Belanger and up to the plate again stepped
Mr. Reginald Martinez Jackson. On the third pitch of the AB, Reggie sent another thunderous
moon shot that caromed of the facade in RF, and bounced back into the OF, and Reggie once
again strolled around the bases to a Thunderous ovation and curtain call, and the Thunder
led 2-1. TV announcer Howard Cossell screamed “Oh what a blow!”
Blue and Jenkins continued their duel in the 7th. Scoreless. They went on to the 8th. Scoreless.
So it came down to the top of the ninth. The Thunder was 3 outs away from a trip to the
World Series. Sandy Alomar and his enfuego bat came up first. Thunder manager See decided
to stick with Blue, since the bullpen had been so inept.
Blue stuck out Alomar. One down.
Dave Cash then stepped in to PH for Billings. Cash launched a screaming liner to CF, but
Cesar Cedeno made a spectacular catch to steal a hit from Cash. 2 outs.
The Captain Sal Bando was all that stood in the way of a trip to the WS for the Thunder.
Blue beared down. WIth the count 1-2. the crowd was on its feet, Blue threw his best curve
ball, and Bando bounced it down the line where George Scott was waiting, Scott stepped on the
bag and bedlam broke out! The Thunder fans stormed the field to celebrate their first trip
to the World Series in a very very hard fought 5 games series.
Sandy Alomar and Reggie Jackson were named co-MVP's of the series. Alomar batted an
incredible .609 with 14 hits. Reggie batting average for the series was great, but his
two HR's in the final game won it for the Thunder and started him well on the way of earning
his legendary moniker "Mr. October."
WP - Vida Blue
LP - Fergie Jenkins
HR - Reggie Jackson (2)

Congratulations to Rich Applegate and his Tourists for a great season and very hard fought series.
All 5 games were incredibly close and could have went either way.
