Flushing Rats vs. Las Vegas Thunder
SPB1-1971 WS GAME 1
The 1971 World Series opened at Shea Stadium on October 10th under clear skies with
a slight breeze of 8mph blowing left to right and a game-time temperature of a
comfortable 67 degrees.
This is the third trip to the World Series in the last four years for the Rats, but
players and fans alike were as nervous and excited as if it were their first time!
The Thunders sent Vida Blue (27-5, 1.60) to the mound to face the Rats’ Tom Seaver
(24-6, 1.57), arguably the top two pitchers in the Major Leagues.
The game started off as expected, with each Ace getting the side in order. After a
1-2-3 top of the 2nd, the Rats quickly got on the board against Blue in the bottom
half of the 2nd. After a Johnny Bench strikeout, Orlando Cepeda took a 1-2 offering
deep over the left field bullpen, driving in Tony Perez, who led the inning off with
a single. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the 6th, when things started to
unravel for Blue. The Rats hit 4 consecutive singles, scoring 1 run and loading the bases.
With no outs and the bases loaded, Fred Scherman slowly walked in from the bullpen, knowing
his task was difficult. Dave May was unable to put the game out of reach, instead
grounding into a double play, forcing Perez at home. After an intentional walk to Bert
Campaneris, Seaver grounded out to end the rally. Richie Zisk ended the scoring with a
solo home run in the 8th off of Jerry Koosman. Seaver, meanwhile, kept the Thunder bats
at bay all day, not allowing a hit until there were two outs in the 5th. Only 1 runner
made it as far as 2nd base. The Rats defense helped by turning 3 double plays in the
final 4 innings, and Seaver finished with a 10-strikeout, 3-hit shutout, a 4-0 Rats win.
Game two probable starters are Wilbur Wood (21-10, 2.42) for the Tigers and Gaylord
Perry (20-9, 2.16) for the Rats.

SPB1-1971 WS GAME 2
Game two of the 1971 World Series at Shea Stadium was much cooler than game 1, reaching
a high of 54 degrees. Skies were still clear, and a light breeze was blowing in from
right field. The Thunders sent Wilbur Wood (21-10, 2.42) to the mound, and the Rats
countered with Gaylord Perry (20-9, 2.16).
The Thunder struck first, on a Thurmon Munson solo home run in the 3rd. Unfortunately
for the Thunder, that would be the final run Perry would allow. Wood was holding down
the Rats attack, scattering 3 hits and a walk over the first 5 innings. Then the Rats
started another 6th-inning rally, getting 6 consecutive hits and scoring 3 runs. With
one out, Ron Theobald singled. Amos Otis then hit a home run into the left field bullpen.
Tony Perez and Johnny Bench singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Orlando Cepeda hit
another single, but Perez was gunned down at home by Cesar Cedeno. Dave May then doubled
down the first base line, scoring Bench. After Bert Campaneris was walked intentionally,
Perry grounded out to end the inning. May would then end the scoring with a 2-run home
run in the 8th, plating Cepeda who had singled to get on base. May had the big bat in
the game, collecting 2 doubles, a home run and 3 RBIs. Perry struck out 8 and allowed
only 5 hits and a walk for the complete-game victory.
The Rats take a 2 games to 0 lead to Riverfront Stadium. Game three probable pitchers
are the Thunder’s Don Wilson (19-8, 2.42) and the Rats’ Ray Culp (13-11, 2.61).

Las Vegas, Nevada – This Las Vegas Thunder came home to the “THUNDERDOME” in a familiar
deficit, down 2 games to none to the Flushing Rats. The Thunder bats were completely
silent in the first two games, and Thunder fans hoped that they could help cheer there
team on to turn things around.
Ray Culp took the mound for the Rats and Don Wilson took the mound for the Thunder.
The game was fairly quiet for the first five innings, with the exception of the Rats
loading the bases in the 2nd inning, but Wilson was able to battle out of the jam.
The score was tied 0-0 heading into the 6th inning.
The red hot Amos Otis led off the 6th and smashed a home run the left field. The Rats
were on the board and led 1-0. Two pitches later, Tony Perez parked Wilson fast ball
into the second deck in left field, 2-0 Rats. Wilson retired the next two batter but
Joe Hague completed the trifecta, taking Wilson deep for the 3rd solo homerun of the inning,
and the Rats were up 3-0, in hope of taking a 3-0 lead in the series.
The score remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the eighth, when the Thunder bats
finally started to show signs of life. After Culp retired the first two batters of the inning,
Rod Carew walked. Gene Clines followed with a single, and with Reggie Jackson coming to the
plate as the possible tying run, Rats manager Dezarlo headed to the mound to visit the tired
Culp. Culp was visibly trying to convince Dezarlo to let him face Reggie, and Joe D. stuck
with him. Culp then proceeded to walk Reggie to load the bases, and Culp was send to the showers.
In came little used reliever Skip Guinn (Guinn has only been in 4 games during the season)
to pitch in the biggest moment of his life. World Series, bases loaded, two outs, Graig Nettles
at the plate. Nettles worked the count to 3-2 and the fans were on their feet. Nettles struck
out, and the grim reality of the 3 games to non deficit began to set in.
Thunder manager See brought in closer Tug McGraw to pitch the 9th, in an attempt to keep the
score close. Unfortunately, McGraw looked more like an arsonist than a closer. The Rats
took it to Tugger hard, scoring four runs in the ninth, putting the Thunder down 7-0, and thing
looked grim.
The Thunder managed to score a run in the bottom of the ninth, giving them some hope for game
4, but the Rats took the game 7-1 and now had a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

SPB1-1971 WS GAME 4
Las Vegas, NV – 3-0. The Thunder would need to win 4 straight to win their first
World Series title. Daunting. The team held a meeting prior to the game, in which T
ug McGraw stood up and gave an emotional speech, in which he finished with “Ya gotta believe!”
Fans got behind their team and 27 game winner Vida Blue was back on the mound for
the Thunder. Former Thunder pitcher George Stone took the mound for the Rats. The
team felt really good about their chances.
The Thunder struck fast in the first inning, when Cesar Cedeno lashed a double and
was knocked in by Reggie Jackson’s RBI single and the Thunder fans pounded their Thunder
Stix!!! 1-0 Thunder.
The Thunder struck again in the third inning. With one out, Rod Carew singled, Cesar
Cedeno was hit by a Stone pitch, and Reggie Jackson walked to load the bases with one out.
Former Rat Draft pick George Scott stepped to the plate, and hit a sac fly, scoring Carew
and gave the Thunder a 2-0 lead.
The Rats struck back quickly though in the 4th inning, when Amos Otis led off with a double
and was driven in by Bench, cutting their deficit in half. Orlando Cepeda followed with
another single, moving Bench to third with one out. Dave May followed with a sac fly to
score Bench, tying the game at 2-2.
The game stayed 2-2 until the top of the 8th inning. Vida Blue, pitching on 3 days rest,
had pitched a gutty 7 innings, and was tiring, so Thunder manager See took him out of the
game, in hopes that he could still be used if the Thunder were able to battle back to a
game 7.
Jerry Johnson came into pitch. Ron Theobald led off with a bunt single. Amos Otis attempted
to bunt him to 2nd, but the bunt failed, leaving Otis at 1b. Tony Perez then grounded out,
but Otis was able to advance to 2nd base with two outs. With 1st base open and Bench at the
plate, See considered intentionally walking Bench, but with Cepeda behind him and already two
outs, See let Johnson face Bench. Bench made them pay, lining a single to score Otis. And
putting the Rats 3 outs away from their first SPB-1 World Series Title.
Joe DeZarlo brought in his closer Phil Mikkelsen to win the clincher. Thunder manager See
countered with PH Rick Miller. Miller responded with a single to right, putting the tying run
on 1st and bringing the potential winning run to the plate.
With Jerry Johnson scheduled to hit, See substituted Rusty Torres to pinch hit. Mikkelsen’s
first pitch was a ball. What happened next on Mikkelsen’s second pitch will go down as when
of the great moments in Thunder history. Here was announcer Vin Scully’s call:
“The Rats are 3 strikes away from their moment of destiny, all that stand in the way is the
little known rookie Rusty Torres who hails from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Oh what this young
rookie must be thinking right now. Here’s the pitch, ball one. Thunder fans are in silent
agony, as they grasp at their final chance to extend this series. Here’s the 1-0 to Torres...
..There’s a drive to right, it could be long enough, IT’S GONE!!!! Rusty Torres has done
the unbelievable, and the Thunder have won the game 4-3! Oh My! “
And with one swing, and down to their last 3 strikes, the Thunder pulled out a 4-3 victory,
and would live to fight onto game 5!

SPB1-1971 WS GAME 5Game five of the 1971 World Series, the final game at Riverfront Stadium before the series heads back to Shea Stadium, was played on a balmy, 61-degree October day. The skies were clear, and a slight wind of 9mph was blowing out to right field. The Rats sent Tom Seaver (24-6, 1.57) to the mound, to face the Thunder’s Wilbur Wood (21-10, 2.42). The home crowd was still buzzing from the dramatic come-from-behind win the day before. After 5 innings, the game was still scoreless. Both pitchers were stingy. Wood allowed 5 meaningless singles, while Seaver gave up just 3 singles and a walk. After another scoreless inning by Wood, the Thunder came to bat in the bottom half of the 6th. With one out, Reggie (Mr. October) Jackson strolled out to the plate. Johnny Bench flashed Seaver the pitch-around sign, and Seaver became furious. He was asked to pitch around Jackson in the 3rd and refused, giving up a single. This time Seaver screamed into the Rats’ dugout “I’ll sit in the bullpen and plant tomatoes before I pitch around ANYONE”. Shortly afterward, Jackson deposited a 2-2 pitch far over the tomato patch in the right field bullpen, his 3rd hit of the game, giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Neither team scored in the 7th, and the game remained 1-0 Thunder. With one out in the top of the 8th, Lou Brock singled. Ron Theobald doubled to deep right field, and Brock scored all the way from first base to tie the game. After Amos Otis grounded out, Tony Perez put the Rats ahead with a single, scoring Theobald. Johnny Bench grounded out to end the inning. Seaver was on a mission since the Jackson home run, but let up his guard, allowing Cesar Cedeno to line a single on the first pitch. Up to the plate came Mr. October himself. Seaver glared into the Rats dugout, but every head turned away. The verbal exchange between Seaver and Jackson cannot be put into print. Then on a 1-1 pitch, Seaver induced Jackson to ground out into a 543 double play. That seemed to take the wind out of the crowd, and there was dead silence after Craig Nettles flied out to end the inning. Orlando Cepeda led off the top of the 9th with a single, but was erased on rookie sensation Richie Zisk’s double play. Bert Campaneris kept the inning alive with a single. Seaver, with fire in his eyes, dropped a double to deep left field, and Campaneris came all the way around to score a huge insurance run. Brock hit another single, but Seaver cautiously stopped at 3rd. Mike Marshall came in to pitch, and got the hot-hitting Theobald to fly out to end the inning. Bottom of the 9th, the crowd somehow back in the game, Thunder sticks banging away. George Scott leads off the inning against Seaver, and strikes out on 3 pitches. Rick Miller comes on to pinch hit for Joe Rudi, and Seaver strikes him out, number 13 on the day. The Thunder are now down to their last out of the game, and the season. Seaver is 3 strikes away from a World Series victory. Game 4 hero Rusty Torres is sent up to pinch hit for Thurmon Munson. The crowd goes wild, and then holds their breath as Torres takes an 0-2 pitch for ball 1. On Seaver’s 143rd pitch of the game, Torres flies out and the Rats win! So there you have it. The Rats won the game and the World Series, their first in SPBI.
