Dayton Triangles vs. Flushing Rats
SPB1-1972 ALCS GAME 1
Game 1 of the ALCS saw the first-ever post season action for the Triangles in the 19
season history of SPB-1, while Joe DeZarlo's Rats are defending their SPB-1 crown.
A beautiful 66 degree Dayton day greeted both teams in the opener, which featured the
Rats' Gaylord Perry (27-9 2.04) against Tom Timmerman (6-5 2.62) for the Triangles.
Dayton manager John Turnbull opted for Timmerman over Steve Carlton due to his home record
of 10-1 and a 2.20ERA.
The first two innings started out scoreless until pitcher Gaylord Perry helped his own cause
starting the third with a single. Bert Campeneris sacrificed him to second with Amos Otis
singling Perry home for the game's first run. Campy contributed again in the fifth with a lead-off
home run, whch opened the flood gates for the Rats, as they scored four runs in the inning,
highighted by a three-run blast by Dave May.
The Rats poured salt on the wound in the seventh, when eight more runs crossed the plate as 12
Rats came to bat. Cookie Rojas singled home the only run of the game for the Triangles, who saw
the opening game slip away by the score of 13-1. With a best-of-five series, the opening victory
was very important for the visiting Rats.

SPB1-1972 ALCS GAME 2
Game 2 featured Tom Seaver (17-11 2.89) for the Rats and Jim McAndrew (12-4 2.29) for
the Triangles. McAndrew also sported a 9-0 1.26 ERA at home for the Dayton club during the season.
The Rats struck first blood once again in the first inning on 3 consecutive 2-out singles
by Brock, Bench, and Perez. Bert Campeneris' second-inning triple made it 2-0, and a solo
home run by Johnny Bench in the third gave Seaver all the runs he would need, as "Tom Terrific"
tossed a 4-hit complete game shutout walking one and striking out 10 as they blank the Triangles
3-0, taking a 2 games to none lead as they head back to Gotham.

SPB1-1972 ALCS GAME 3
Game three of the 1972 American League Championship Series switched venues to Shea Stadium
on October 6th, 1972. Game time temperature was 55 degrees, with rain in the forecast and an
already wet field. The Triangles sent Steve Carlton (17-13,3.20) to the mound to face the
Rats’ Milt Pappas (18-5,2.24).
The Rats jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the 1st. With one out, Amos Otis and
Lou Brock singled. Johnny Bench then cracked a 3-run home run to deep left field. The Triangles
got right back into the game in the top of the 2nd. Willie Stargell led off with a single, then
Ron Fairly brought him home with a 2-run bomb to deep right center. Those 2 runs doubled the total
scoring by the Triangles in the first two games!
There the score remained until the top of the 8th. Both starters settled down, although Pappas was
giving up a few more hits. A couple of double plays helped him out. After getting the first out,
Stargell singled, Carlton Fisk was hit by a pitch, and Bill Melton singled to load the bases. With
11 hits given up, Pappas was done. Lefty Ken Brett was brought in to face lefty Fairly, hoping for
a double play. Instead, Fairly singled home Stargell to tie the game at 3. Pinch-hitter Damaso
Blanco then drove home Fisk with a single, giving the Triangles their first lead of the series!
Tom Norton came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th, and Bench greeted him with a leadoff double.
Tony Perez’s single to left center scored Bench to tie the game at 4. Norton got out of the inning
without causing any further damage.
The score remained all knotted up for the next 7 innings, with a multitude of pitchers brought in by
both teams. Finally, in the top of the 16th inning, the Triangles broke the tie and broke the game
open with 4 runs of Cy Acosta. Tony Taylor led off with a walk. After a wild pitch, Billy Williams
was intentionally walked to set up a force. Stargell ruined the strategy with a single to right,
plating Taylor. Fisk struck out, but then Melton crushed a 3-run homer to deep left, making the
score 8-4. Acosta then retired Fairly and Rudy Hernandez to end the inning. The Rats were not
done yet. Otis singled with one out. Lou Brock’s grounder sent Otis to 2nd, but with 2 outs.
Bench was intentionally walked to set up a force. This time it was Perez’s turn to ruin the
strategy, and he did so with a 2-run triple down the right field line. The Triangles couldn’t
believe what was happening. But John Cumberland bore down and got Denis Menke to fly out to
center to end the game, a 16-inning, 8-6 victory for the Triangles.
There were a total of 14 pitchers and 431 pitches thrown in the game.
Game four probable starters are Dave McNally (16-8,3.52) for the Triangles and
Gaylord Perry (27-9,2.04) for the Rats.

SPB1-1972 ALCS GAME 4
Game four of the 1972 American League Championship Series at Shea Stadium was played
under partly cloudy skies. Game time temperature was a chilly 46 degrees. The Triangles
went with Dave McNally (16-8,3.52), while the Rats countered with Gaylord Perry (27-9,2.04).
The Rats entered game four with a 2-1 advantage, but the Triangles had the momentum after
an exciting, 16-inning victory. The Triangles were hoping that momentum would carry them
to another victory, but even so, winning three consecutive games on the road in the post
season is a difficult task for any team.
Once again, the Rats scored in the 1st inning. Bert Campaneris singled, and Amos Otis
sacrificed him to second. After Lou Brock flied out, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez hit
back-to-back run-scoring doubles to give Perry an early 2-0 lead. The Rats added another
run in the 3rd inning on an infield hit by Dave May with the bases loaded and 2 outs.
That’s where the story ends, as Perry tossed a 2-hit shutout. Billy Williams had both
hits for the Triangles, the first came with 2 outs in the 6th inning. McNally settled
down after the 3rd inning, and pitched well until he was removed for a pinch hitter in
the 8th inning.
There were a few candidates worthy for the series MVP. Johnny Bench batted .438 with 2
doubles, 2 home runs, 7 runs scored and 5 RBIs. Tony Perez batted .500 with 3 doubles,
1 triple and 7 RBIs. However, Gaylord Perry was awarded the series MVP for his 2 complete-game
wins, including 1 shutout and a 0.50ERA.
