Cleveland Spiders vs. Las Vegas
Thunder
SPB1-1974 NLCS GAME 1
Las Vegas NV – After coming of a 119 win season, the Las Vegas Thunder were heavy favorites against
the always tough Cleveland Spiders to take the 1974 National League Pennant, but Las Vegas Manager Michael
See was admit ant before the game that this was anyone’s series to win. “We went into last year’s LCS as
the heavy favorites, only to be upset in 4 games by an upstart Lafayette team,” said See, “We are not taking
anything for granted.”
The game started slowly for both teams, as starters Buzz Capra and Mickey Lolich dueled for the first 3
innings, with neither team able to generate any offense.
The Thunder finally broke through against Mickey in the 4th. Mr. October Reggie Jackson lined a clean single
to lead off the inning and was advanced to second on a GB by Boomer Scott. Mr. Walk Mike Jorgensen then walked.
After a Munson strike out, both runners scored on a clutch two-out double by Graig Nettles, giving the Thunder
a 2-0 lead. They added another run on an RBI single by Dave Concepcion, extending the lead to 3-0.
The way Capra was pitching is seemed to be more than the Thunder would need for the win was Buzz cruised through
the first six innings easily, as the Thunder led 3-0 going into the 7th.
The Spider 7th started innocently enough, with a Joe Torre strikeout, but Hal McRae got the Spiders on the board
with a solo HR off of Capsra. Capra, who was dominant all year, appeared to be a bit shaken by the HR, and his
pitching showed it, as he walked the next two batters Gene Tenace and Bucky Dent, drawing a visit to the mound
by manager See.
Having thrown 116 pitches, see had just gotten RP Elias Sosa up in the bullpen, and he asked Monson if Buzz had
anything left in the tank. Munson said Buzz was just a little wild, but his stuff was still good, so See decided
to let his ace pitcher go against PH Pat Borque. Capra came through and got Borque to fly out. With two outs,
manager See felt good about his chances with Capra against the light hitting Lenny Randle, “I figured I give him
one more hitter at a 120 pitches, and that the worst that could happen is a Randle single, cutting our lead to 1”
said See.
Was See ever wrong. Randle took a 1-0 pitch and deposited it over the CF wall, and gave the Spiders a stunning
4-3 lead in the 7th. “I left one up in the zone,” said Capra, “Lenny just gave it a ride.” Buzz stayed in to
get the final out, but the damage was done and all of the momentum was on the side of the Spiders. Manager Mike
See could see the replay from last year’s LCS upset loss all over again.
Both teams traded outs until the bottom of the ninth. The Thunder were down to their last chance and truing to
avoid going down 1-0 at home, knowing that the last 3 games were on the road. It was critical to get a win here.
The Spiders top pitcher Grant Jackson was brought into slam the door, and the Professor Chris Williams made some
defensive changes to sure up the infield. Randle moved to 3b, André Thornton was inserted at 1B and Tommy Helms
was put in at 2b. The Spider were feeling good about their chances against all of the Thunder lefties.
The left handed Bake McBride was sent up to pinch hit, and laced a double, putting the tying run on base.
The next batter Rod Carew was instructed to bunt, something he was not asked to do often. He laid one down to
new 3rd Sacker and game hero Lenny Randle who bent down to field it, but could not get the ball out of his glove!
It was ruled an error, and the Thunder had runners at 1st and 3rd and no one out!
Cesar Cedeno has a chance to be a here, but Jackson struck him out, bringing up Mr. October. Reggie did not let
the team down bashing a long flyout, scoring McBride and tying the game a 4-4! The air that had been sucked out
of Thunder Field was back, and the crowd went wild!
The score remained that way into extra innings, and with bullpen ace Mike Marshall on the mound, the Thunder
seemed to have all the momentum. But both offenses go not get anything going, and the score remained 4-4 into
the bottom of the 12th.
Reggie Jackson led off the bottom of the 12th against Paul Lindblad, and in true Mr. October fashion, lined a
double to lead off the inning. He was advanced to third again by George Scott. With the infield in, Mike
Jorgensen failed to bring Reggie home, grounding out. Then team Captain Thurman Munson stepped to the plate.
Thurman drilled Lindblad’s 1-1 pitch passed the drawn in infield, and the Thunder had a come from behind 5-4 win
with ace Catfish Hunter taking the mound tomorrow. All was still well in Las Vegas.

SPB1-1974 NLCS GAME 2
Las Vegas, NV - Having thrown not one but TWO Perfect Games this season, Catfish Hunter was a
little surprised he was not given the start by manager Mike See in game 1, and was even more
fired up know this would be his only start of the series. “The only reason I can think of is
that I lost Game 1 last year, and he was trying to change things up with Buzz,” said Catfish,
“If this is going to be my only start, I am going to make the most of it!” He would face off
against the Spiders Jim Barr.
The game was scoreless again through 3 innings, but again in the bottom of the 4th, Mr. October
led off with a double, and was plated by Mike Jorgensen. “Someone has to drive this team,” Said
Reggie, “These guys know that I am the straw that stirs the drink, and I ain't gonna let them down!”
Hunter and Barr continued to battle until the bottom of the 6th, when with the score still 1-0,
Cesar Cedeno lined a two out single to bring up, who else, Mr. October Reggie Jackson.
Reggie did not disappoint, launching a moonshot Home Run to deep right field, extending the
Thunder lead to 3-0.
Catfish took things the rest of the way, firing goose eggs the rest of the game, giving the Thunder
a 3-0 win and a 2-0 lead in the series as then headed off to chilly Cleveland to try to finish off
the Spiders.

SPB1-1974 NLCS GAME 3
Cleveland, Ohio – From warm and mild to cold and windy. The Thunder were met in Cleveland by a
cold 13 mph wind blowing out to LF. With Vida Blue taking to hill for the Thunder, and Stan Bahnsen
for the Spiders, this game looked like it might see a bit more scoring.
The Thunder wasted no time getting on the board in the first. With two outs, once again Reginald
Martinez Jackson put the Thunder up 1-0 with another HR, as “The Straw” gave the Thunder and early
1-0 lead.
It did not last long though, when in the bottom of the 1st, Lenny Randle led off with a walk and was
brought home by a Gene Tenace blast, getting the Spiders fans out of their seats, and Cleveland was
rocking to the tune of a 2-1 lead!
The Thunder struck back in the 3rd with two outs, when (this is getting a bit much) Mr. October Reggie
Jackson laced a two out single, them immediately stole second. He was driven in again by Mike Jorgensen’s
clutch single, and the Thunder tied the game a 2-2!
From there, the wind settled down and Blue and Bahnsen took over, throwing zero’s through 7th inning.
This one was gonna come down to the wire, and the Spiders felt confident being at home with their strong
pen that they could get to game 4 and have a shot at taking the series back with the remaining game
in Cleveland.
Bahnsen was replaced by Paul Lindblad with a lot of Thunder lefties due up. With Reggie having made
the last out in the 7th, the rest of the Thunder decided to show him they could help too. Mike Jorgensen
led off the inning with a walk. Graig Nettles then singled, moving Mike to second. George Scott got into
the swing, with an infield single that loaded the bases, and had Spiders fans on the edge of their seat.
Williams had seen enough and took Lindblad out, replacing him with Bob Apodaca. Thurman Munson was induced
hit an easy grounder to Tommy Helms at 2B, but instead of turning what have might have been an easy double
play, Helms let the ball go underneath his glove, scoring Jorgensen, and wasting a golden opportunity to
get out of the inning with little damage. “Defense was the key to the series,” said Williams, “It
deserted us when we needed it the most.” The next batter Conceepcion struck out, on what could have been
the 3rd out of the inning.
Ron Blomberg was sent to the plate to hit against the RH Apodaca, when sensing the danger, the Professor
brought in his ace Grant Jackson to attempt to shut down the Thunder rally and keep it a 1-run game. See
countered with the righty Tony Taylor.
Taylor launched a single, scoring both Nettles and Scott, making it 5-2, and the flood gates opened. Rod
Carew doubles, Grant Jackson then made another error against Cesar Cedeno, Reggie walked, Jorgensen hot a
sac fly, Nettles and Scott collected singles, and before it was over, the Thunder had scored 8 runs and
had a 10-2 lead. “It was good to see the entire team hit in that situation,” said manager Mike See. “Reggie
certainly carried us with our pitching, but the rest of these guys are pretty good too!”
The Spiders show some resilience in the 9th with two solo HR’s off of ace Mike Marshall, but it was too
little too late, as the Thunder won 10-4 and collected their first Pennant since 1971!
Mr. October Reggie Jackson was of course named the LCS MVP……….
