Guys, I tried my best to extract out a copy of the Boxscore and paste it into this e-mailing. Playing today on the 4th of July, (alone again--gilbert O Sullivan), the Dukes were surprised to be given such an early season "consolation" prize. Mr Rogers allowed only 7 balls hit out of the infield all day, and NONE after the sixth inning. Manager Schweitzer, knowing his luck, was sweating bullets facing PH Larry Milbourne(batting for P Fryman of the Phillies) as the last out to get. We all know how the least of hitters have the uncanny ability of breaking up a No hitter or perfect game. But today, it was NOT TO BE! Milbourne grounded weakly to Millan, and as they say,..."That was that"!!!!!!! This will probably never happen again to me, so it was a very cool kind of thing as it happened!!! Just wish the Dukes had enough of that to challenge for something. Happy Fourth of July gentlemen. Steve Rogers is one of my favorite pitchers of all time. I have had him on my various rosters many times. He is one of those pitchers who may have had a different place in the history books had he played on a good team. Perhaps the HOF. 158-152 over 13 seasons with the pathetic Expos. 3.17 ERA, 1.232 WHIP, 129 CG and 37 career shutouts. Only 62 pitchers ever had 37 or more career shutouts. 41 of them are in the HOF. Don ------------------------------------------------------ One thing I remember about Steve Rogers is that he was on my APBA team in 1982 and was one of the highest rated pitchers (APBA went entirely on ERA and he led the league that year. Didn't want to trade him but there guy offered me a young SS by the name of Cal Ripken plus a first round draft pick and I could't turn it down. John Ungashick ------------------------------------------------------- I have never had Steve Rogers on any of my teams. But I believe the same as Don Rahn, that he was one of the elite pitchers of his time, and if he had played on a good team, the HOF may have had him already. He was a force, and one of the few pitchers from the 70-80's that I really liked. Best, Gary ------------------------------------------------------ Well, Steve Rogers is 3+ years YOUNGER than I am... He was a favorite of mine, also, but my kids all liked his Uncle Fred Rogers a lot! Both of them were great guys to have in your "neighborhood." (And, no - I don't believe that Fred Rogers was Steve's uncle. And all the silliness about tattoos and Navy SEAL/sharpshooter - all poppycock. He was an ordained minister, and was in broadcasting for almost 50 years. My kids would walk away from Sesame Street, but never from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.) Dave Lauer ------------------------------------------------------ Hi everyone, My good friend, Bob Meyerhoff, does consulting work for MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association). Steve Rogers works at MLBPA and Bob knows him well. I passed along the message that Rogers threw a perfect game in our league. By total coincidence, Bob is going to see Steve today and will let him know about his latest "athletic" accomplishment. John Dewan ----------------------------------------------------- The Great thing about this Perfect Game, is just how plausible it is to picture Steve Rogers throwing a perfect game! I actually was looking up Steve Rogers online yesterday, it appears he lives in West Windsor N.J. (less than an hour from Amboy Duke management offices!) here in Howell N.J.. Wouldn't that be a real kicker if Mr Steve Rogers would pose for a pic with yours truly with the Boxscore, somewhere convenient to him in West Windsor N.J.!!! Just a thought, but I'd be honored to drive out there! Either way, this has been lots of fun hearing everyone's comments. Your fellow baseball bud, Albert "Doc" Schweitzer ------------------------------------------------------ Dang, now I see it was not only a no-hitter, but a PERFECT FREAKIN' GAME! Makes it doubly awesome! My team isn't exactly a bunch of slackers at the plate either! Doc, I envy ya. Mike Boling -----------------------------------------------------
