SPB1-1979 WS GAME 1 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 1 Cleveland Spiders at Las Vegas Thunder Geoff Zahn vs Jerry Koosman Las Vegas - The two time defending World Series Champion Thunder face the Cinderella Cleveland Spiders. Could it continue to be the year of Cleveland???? Spiders jump out on top quickly 1-0 in the 1st inning on a Bucky Dent single but the Thunder storms back in the 3rd with two quick runs to take the lead 2-1. The resilient Spiders though create some Thunder of their own off the bat of Otto Velez in the 5th, when his 2 run HR puts them back on top 3-2. In the 6th, the Spiders magic continued off the bat of Geoff Zahn, when his single plated to more runs off of Koosman, making the score 5-2. The Thunder were a bit dazed, but their Super Hero final stepped in to save the day, when in the bottom of the 6th, "Mr. October" Reggie Jackson smaked a 3-run HR to tie the game at 5 a piece. In the 8th, the Thunder broke it open off of Dick Tidrow, plating 5 more runs, in route to a 10-5 win and 1-0 series lead. SPB1-1979 WS GAME 2 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 2 Cleveland Spiders at Las Vegas Thunder Jim Barr vs Scott McGregor Las Vegas - The upstart Cleveland Spiders again continued their fine hitting, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in this one, when Bucky Dent's 2nd inning triple scored Otto Velez to give the Spiders an early lead. But the Thunder again struck back quickly, when after a Reggie Jackson triple, Ron Hassey smashed a 2-run HR to make it 2-1. From that moment on though, Jim Barr became an inspired pitcher, shutting down the vaunted Thunder lineup. Meanwhile, the Spiders bad continued to hit, scoring once in the 3rd on an RBI single by Andre Thornton, twice in the 4th on a sac fly by Barr and single by Rick Manning, putting the Spiders on 4-2. They added another run in the 6th on a Rick Manning RBI ground out to go up 5-2. Manager Williams switched to his pen after 5 solid innings by Barr and Sammy Stewart and Pete Redfen shut the Thunder down over the final 4 innings to take Game 2 easily by a score of 5-2. Barr picked up the win and the loss went yo Scott McGregor. SPB1-1979 WS GAME 3 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 2 Las Vegas Thunder at Cleveland Spiders J.R. Richard vs Bob Stanley Having surprised the SPB universe by tying up the series in Las Vegas, the Spiders sent sinkerballer Bob Stanley to the mound against the dominating, intimidating fastballer J.R. Richard. The Thunder struck first, as Pat Kelly opened the 2nd inning with a homer into the right field seats. But when the Thunder continued to threaten, Bigfoot got Willie Randolph to ground into what would turn into the first of 4 double plays he induced for the game. In the bottom of the 3rd, utility infielder Jim Anderson led off with a single, moved to second on Stanley’s bunt, and scored on Rob Wilfong’s double, tying the game. The next batter, Jose Cruz, then homered to vault the Spiders into a 3-1 lead. Both teams traded scoreless fourths, but in the bottom of the 5th, the floodgates opened. Bigfoot led off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Manning, and Wilfong singled, loading the bases. Cruz tripled into the deep centerfield corner, clearing the bases—and driving in his 5th run of the game. Richard walked McRae and got Tenace to strike out, but Andre Thornton singled to left to run the score to 7-1. Wayne Gross then singled, but McRae was thrown out at the plate. Pete Vukovich then came on to get Stanley to ground out, ending the inning. Stanley continued to spin his weird, sloppy magic, getting 3 more double plays, and the score remained steady until the 7th, when Gross doubled home Thornton. The Thunder finally got another run in the 8th on an infield grounder by Fred Lynn, but the Spiders erased that in the bottom of the inning. Cruz doubled home Wilfong, his 6th rbi—he finished one single short of the cycle. Then Anderson walked with the bases loaded, pushing the score to 10-2. When Grant Jackson took the mound in the 9th, it looked like a simple 3-out assignment. But this is where the sheer danger of the Thunder lineup revealed itself. Pinch-hitting for Ron Hassey, Joe Ferguson singled, and afer David Concepcion struck out, Willie Randolph singled Ferguson to second. When Mike Vail was announced as a pinch-hitter, manager Williams brought on Dick Tidrow, who had been effective throughout the season, however hapless he had been in the post-season. Tidrow promptly walked Vail to loaded the bases, but got Carew to ground into a force out, scoring a run but bringing the Spiders one out from a 10-3 victory. Tidrow walked Harrah, then Willie Randolph drove a ball off Andre Thornton’s glove, making it 10-4. Reggie Jackson then doubled home Carew and Harrah (10-6), and George Hendrick then singled home Lynn. This chased Tidrow, bringing on Don Aase, who was greeted by a lined rbi single off the bat of Joe Ferguson, narrowing the score to 10-8 and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Aase walked Concepcion loading the bases. Pete Redfern came on and struck out Randolph, finally ending the game. In the end it took 4 Spiders pitchers to hold an 8-run lead, but hold on they did. Fun fact: both starters through a total of 102 pitches, 62 of which were strikes; but what a difference in results! SPB1-19797 WS GAME 4 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 4 Las Vegas Thunder at Cleveland Spiders Jim Bibby vs Don Robinson Cleveland – Seeking to press their advantage, the Spiders sent their 2nd-year pitcher Don Robinson to the mound to face off against Jim Bibby. (Fans of the real-life 1979 season will recognize a matchup of 2 of the starters from the W.S. champion Pirates. The first couple innings unfolded uneventfully, but the Thunder asserted themselves in the 3rd. After getting Bibby to ground out, Robinson gave up a single to Carew, walked Harrah, got Lynn on a fore, but then, with Reggie at the plate, wild-pitched Carew home. Jackson then followed up with a 2-run homer, his second of the series. The Thunder added solo runs in the 5th and 6th. Mickey Lolich, in his final season (and making his final SPB appearance), came on to start the 7th, and promptly walked three of the first four batters he faced. This was a horrible hole to get into against the fearsome Thunder, and they made him pay. George Hendrick doubled home 2 runs, and Dave Concepcion singled home another, running the score to 8-0. The Spiders did get on the board in the bottom of the inning, but it was just two runs. When the dust settled, the Thunder had won a 9-2 laugher. Bibby was the beneficiary of the most lopsided game in the series so far. Jim Anderson’s home run put the Spiders on the board first. But the Thunders respond quickly. In the very next frame, George Hendrick homers to tie the game. Randolph leads off the third by reaching on Anderson’s error, moves to second on Koosman’s bunt, Cedeno walks, then Toby Harrah plates them all with his first homer of the series. It was all Thunder the rest of the way. Another run scores on a double play in the 6th, but then Tidrow came on in the 7th to redeem himself—and gives up another three runs. SPB1-1979 WS GAME 6 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 6 Cleveland Spiders at Las Vegas Thunder Jim Barr vs Scott McGregor Las Vegas - Throughout the season, 12-game winner and long-time Spider workhorse Jim Barr had been outperformed by his colleagues Stanley, Zahn, and Robinson, so it was definitely a risky choice to send him out in a rematch of the game 2 starters in a must-win game. But the Spiders wasted no time. Gene Tenace led off the game with a triple deep to right center, and scored on a fly ball off the bat of Otto Velez. Bibby scraped by in the first couple innings, but his contortions caught up with him in the 3rd. With one out, he allowed a single to the pitcher McGregor, walked Carew, got Harrah to ground into a force out, walked Lynn to load the bases, then walked Reggie Jackson to tie the game. He escaped by getting George Hendrick to fly out to Velez. The Spiders struck back in the 4th, stringing together a walk and three straight hits. This netted the Spiders just one run, though, as McGregor proved tough in the clutch. The sixth inning was more damaging, as Thornton led off with a double and scored, when Jose Cruz hit his second home run of the series, pushing the Spiders up 4-1. Meanwhile, Barr bore down. Three of the first four players he faced in the bottom of the 6th reached, narrowing the score to 4-2, but he got out of the inning by getting Concepcion to ground into a double play. Aase came on to start the eighth, and allowed a homer to Fred Lynn, making it a 1-run game. After Jackson walked and Hendrick followed that up with a single, it was time for closer Grant Jackson. He got Vail to ground out to first on one pitch, and it took only 2 more pitches to get Concepcion out on a liner to Wilfong. Jackson retired the side on three ground balls in the 9th to lock down the save. SPB1-1979 WS GAME 7 SPB-1 1979 WS Game 7 Cleveland Spiders at Las Vegas Thunder Bob Stanley vs J.R. Richard Las Vegas – one would think that the dominant power pitching of a J.R. Richard would have the advantage over the hit-prone tightrope act of Bob Stanley, especially in Yankee Stadium. But Richard had struggled in his first series appearance, at Fenway. But Stanley was not at all sharp. After Richard retired the Spiders in the 1st, Rod Carew opened the game with a single and moved to second on Wayne Gross’s error. Fred Lynn then parked Stanley’s first pitch deep into the right-field seats. The third inning started off well for Richard when he struck out Stanley, who had been a tough out in Game 3. Rick Manning followed that with a single through the infield, but then Wilfong also struck out. Jose Cruz then drew a 7-pitch walk, and Richard walked Hal McCrae on four pitches, loading the bases. Richard then walked the next two batters, handing the Spiders 2 runs. But the Thunder still held the 3-2 lead in this decisive Game 7. Jim Anderson singled to start the 4th inning, and after Stanley struck out, moved to 2nd on a Thurmon Munson passed ball. Manager Mike See then acted decisively, lifting the wild Richard, who had already thrown 86 pitches, to bring on Game 1 and 5 starter Jerry Koosman. Was this move too abrupt? Koosman walked the first two batters he faced, loading the bases, but got the dangerous Cruz to fly out to center. But Otto Velez singled home the tying and go-ahead runs, then Tenace homered deep to left, pushing the Spiders up 7-3. When Koosman walked the next two batters, See yanked him for Game 4 starter Bibby. Bibby then walked the next 2 hitters, and gave up an rbi single to Rick Manning, leaving the bases loaded. After Wilfong walked, Cruz lined a single down the right field line, scoring two more runs. Finally, Otto Velez flied out, ending the inning When the dust settled, See looked dejectedly up at the scoreboard to see that the suddenly resurgent Spiders had plated 10 runs in the inning But the Thunder were not done. Trailing 12-3 with two out in the bottom of the 5th, Carew walked and was moved to second on Harrah’s singled. Then Lynn drove Stanley’s 6th pitch deep to right—his second 3-run homer of the game! Down 12-6 in just the 5th inning, the Thunder thought to explode against the ever-vulnerable Spiders bullpen. (Would Dick Tidrow make another appearance?). And the Thunder relief corps did their part, not allowing another run for the last 5 innings of the game. Tug McGraw pitched got out of the 5th with a double play, and Bill Atkinson pitched the final four innings, allowing just two singles and two walks, while striking out two and getting 6 ground balls. But the Spiders relievers were, surprisingly, almost as good—and that was more than good enough. Pete Redfern pitched 2 1/3 innings, and was relieved by Grant Jackson after he allowed a 1-out single to Carew and Harrah reached on a Thornton error. Jackson allowed a single to load the bases, an rbi single to Reggie Jackson, and another run that scored on a fielder’s choice. Finally, Joe Ferguson flew out to Rick Manning, ending the game, with the Spiders winning the 12-8 slugfest. The Spiders win their first championship—and make their first World Series appearance in 7 years. Jose Cruz was named series MVP, for batting .300 with 10 key rbi and 2 homers. In their history, the Spiders have won championships only in 1966 and 1972. Only seven players remain from that last championship team. Game 2 and 6 starter Jim Barr was the only member of the 1979 starting rotation on that 1972 roster, but he was used as then primarily as a reliever. Of other pitchers from that 1972 championship club, only then-workhorse starters Mickey Lolich and Dick Tidrow remain. The only batters still on the roster were Gene Tenace, Ken Henderson, Jose Cruz, and Hal McRae. Word was released shortly after the series concluded that key utility man Jim Anderson had been traded for Eric Soderholm and John Verhoeven. It was also learned that power-hitting 1b-man Andre Thornton, who won the 1979 Roberto Clemente award, would miss all of the 1980 season with a severe knee injury requiring major surgery. Otto Velez is expected to take his place in the regular lineup.
