while Manager Baxter sends Britt Burns as his ace Bill Gullickson is unavailable due to
pitching the decisive 5th game in the National League Championship Series. Both pitchers
throw zeros in the first. In the top of the 2nd, Bruce Benedict leads off with a HR. 1-0
Citys.
Both starters trade zeros until the top of the 7th. Warren Cromartie leads off with a single
and Durham flies out. Burns sacrifices Warren to second and Moreno singles Cro home. 2-0 Citys
The Forest Citys score 1 in the 8th to leads 3-0 going into the bottom of the 8th. Babbitt
and Madlock ground out but Concepcion singles. Baxter immediately goes to closer Goose Gossage
(5-2 0.56 ERA and 32 saves) to face RH Gorman Thomas. With the tieing run at the plate, Gossage
gets Gorman to fly out to CF to end the threat.
The forest Citys score another in the top of the 9th and Goose sets down the Thunder 1-2-3 in

Starters: Thunder - Blue (15-9 2.78 ERA) vs. Forest Citys – Williams (14-12 3.38 ERA)
Top of the 1st, Omar Moreno singles and steals 2nd. After Whitaker strikes out, Blue
throws a WP and Moreno is now on 3rd. Bill Buckner hits a Sac Fly and it is 1-0 Citys.
In the bottom of the first, the Thunder tie it up. Madlock singles and Reggie Jackson
doubles him home. Reggie goes to third on an error by Whitaker on the relay home. Williams
strikes out Carew to end the inning.
The Thunder get another run in the bottom of the 2nd on a single by Conception and a
run-scoring double by Blue. 2-1 Thunder.
The Forest Citys score a couple in the top of the 6th as Blue walks the bases load and
Williams singles home 2. 3-2 Citys
The Forest Citys seem to put the game out of reach as they score 4 in the top of the
6th. The big blow is Buckner’s 3 run homer. 7-2 Citys
Williams cruises until the bottom of the 9th. Madlock leads off with a 2B and Reggie
singles him to 3rd. Gossage relieves Williams and immediately gives up a 3-run homer
to Stormin’ Gormon Thomas. After a ground out by PH Mike Patterson Simmons blasts a HR
off Gossage sending him to the showers. George Frazier comes on and Concepion scorches
a line drive that SS Larry Milbourne snares. Randolph bounces out to second. 2 games to
none – Forest Citys.

Game 3, October 12, 1981 at Rockford
Starters: Thunder - Rogers (14-15 4.08 ERA) vs. Forest Citys – Gullickson (19-7 2.48 ERA)
A mild clear day in Rockford for game 3. The Thunder strike in the top of the first as
Madlock and Carew both single. Reggie grounds into a double play and it looks like Gullickson
will get out of the jam, but he grooves one to Gorman who smashes it deep into the left
field bleachers. 2-0 Thunder after 1.
The Forest Citys score in the bottom of the 5th as Cromartie reaches 2nd on a throwing error
by Bill Madlock. Larry Milbourne grounds out as Cro goes to third. A single by Ray Knight
plates Warren. 2-1 Thunder after 5.
The Thunder come back and add a run in the bottom of the 6th. Madlock singles, steals 2nd and
goes to 3rd as Benedict throws the ball into CF. Reggie singles home Bill and it is 3-1 Thunder.
Simmons adds a HR in the 7th and it is 4-1 Thunder going into the bottom of the 8th. Jerry
Koosman is now on the mound for the Thunder. Rance Mulliniks, a LH batter who came in to play
3rd on a double switch in the 7th leads off. Manager Baxter lets Rance hit and he singles.
Moreno singles Mulliniks to 2nd and Tug McGraw comes on to pitch. Whitaker greets Tug with
a 3B driving home both baserunners. Durham singles and very suddenly it is a tie game at 4.
Bull Durham steals 2B and scores on a single by Billy Buck and Buckner reaches 3rd on a throwing
error by George Hendrick. Cromartie strikes out by Milbourne plates Buckner with a sac fly.
After 8 it is 6-4 Forest Citys.
Goose comes on to pitch the 9th and gives up a one out walk before shutting down the Thunder.
The upstart Thunder are now up 3 games to none!

Game 4, October 13, 1981 at Rockford
Starters: Thunder – Jerry Reuss (0-1) vs. Forest Citys – Brian Allard (5-2 3.31 ERA)
Brian Allard, who came from the Thunder in a late spring training trade, starts for
Rockford against game 1 loser Jerry Reuss. Allard gets into trouble in the first as
Carew 1Bs and steals second and Madlock HRs. 2-0 Thunder.
The Thunder give back the lead in the bottom of the third. Moreno doubles with one out.
After Whitaker fouls out, Buckner singles home Moreno. Benedict singles Buckner to 3rd
and Cromartie singles home Bucker. 2-2 after 3.
The Forest Citys blow the game open in the 4th and 5th. Milbourne singles and Durham
triples. Allard singles home Durham. Moreno doubles Allard to 3rd and Bucner singles
home 2. After 4, Citys lead 6-2.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Citys plate 4 more. Milbourne and Durham single and
Allard sacrifices them over. Moreno singles home both and goes to 2nd on the throw
home. Whitaker walks and Buckner singles home Moreno. Benedict hits a sac fly and it
is now 10-2 Citys.
The Thunder still have some fight left in them as they score 1 in the 6th and 3 in the
7th to narrow the lead to 10-6. The big blow in the 7th is a 2-run HR by Willie Randolph.
Allard exits and Sutcliffe gives up a HR to PH Gary Gray.
The Forest Citys put three more on the board in the bottom of the 8th. Milbourne triple
home Knight who had singled. After a ground out Fingers comes in. Randolph kicks a grounder
allowing Milbourne to score. Moreno singles and Whitaker doubles him home. After 8, 13-6 Citys.
In the bottom of the 9th, Simmons strikes out but Concepcion reaches on an erro by
Milbourne. Gossage relives frazier as Baxter is taking no changes even with a 7 run
lead. The Rockford faithful are on their feet chanting ‘GOOSE”, but Goose walks Randolph.
Mike Patterson hits a PH double scoring 2 and it looks like a replay of game 2 when Gossage
blew up in the 9th. Carew walks. Baxter sticks with Goose and he finally gets Madlock to
fly to right and the Forest Citys are World Champions for the first time since 1967!
