SPB1-1985 NL DIVISION SERIES GAME 1
Game 1: A matchup staff aces as the Thunder send Orel Hershiser (15-9, 2.43 ERA) out to face Met Sid Fernandez (16-4, 2.07 ERA)
Both SP’s delivered as expected through the first 5 innings. The score was 0-0 with both SP’s allowing only 3 baserunners each.
After Fernandez set down the Thunder in order in the top of the 6th, Alfredo Griffin leads off by reaching 2B for the Mets on a
throwing error by Hershiser. After Von Hayes moves Griffin over to 3B on groundout, Hershiser throws a WP, allowing Griffin to
scamper home. Mattingly walks on a 3-2 pitch and Dave “Cobra” Parker doubles him home. Hershiser settle down and strikes out
the next two batters.
After Fernandez puts the Thunder down in order in the top of the 7th, the Mets send 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of
the inning, scoring 11 runs on 9 hits, including 3 doubles and a Kent Hrbek homer. Alfredo Griffin doubled twice in the inning.
Mets take a 1-0 series lead with a 14-0 win behind Fat Sid who finished with a 2-hit, 10-k shutout.

Game 2: Thunder go with Kevin Gross (8-15, 4.21 ERA) to face the Mets Oil Can Boyd (12-6, 2.77 ERA)
Mets take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd on a Don Mattingly solo homered followed by back-to-back doubles by
Dave Parker and Kent Hrbek. Boyd was cruising into the 6th without allowing a run. However, the Thunder tie the
game in the 6th by scoring their first two runs of the series on a Puckett RBI double and a Davis FC RBI. Mets
take a 3-2 lead in the 7th when Mattingly and Parker hit back-to-back doubles. The pesky Thunder tie it again in
the top of the 8th on a Ron Kittle RBI single. While Met reliever Brian Fisher gets the blown save, her pitches a
1-2-3 9th. Mets then end it quickly in the bottom of the 9th when Griffin leads off with a double and the next
batter Von Hayes doubles him home. Mets take 2-0 series lead with a 4-3 walk-off win.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the 9th after Clemens retired the first batter, but then walked 2 straight. Donnie Moore entered
the game for the Mets and after loading the bases on a shallow single to the OF, he records two straight outs to earn the save. Mets take

Hershiser pitched extremely well in the opener until he made and error and then all hell broke loose. He plays the role of stopper here and doesn’t
allow a run until the 9th when he had a 3-0 lead. He finishes with a complete game, keeping his team alive, but down 3-1. Las Vegas wins 3-2.

Game 5: Mets send game 1 winner Sid Fernandez out to face Thunder game 2 SP Kevin Gross.
Both pitchers were brilliant. Marty Barrett drove in a on a RBI single in the bottom of the 4th for Vegas. The score
remained 1-0 until the top of the 8th when Reynolds led off with a double and moved to 3rd on a Perconte single. Dempsey
then singled home the game tying run. Griffin bunted the 2 runners over to put runners on 2B and 3B. Von Hayes then
delivered the death blow with a 2-un triple and scored on a Mattingly sac fly RBI. Fernandez allowed only one base-runner
in the final 2 innings as the Mets win 5-1 to take the series 4 games to 1.
