Played April 22-28, Hoosiers scored 39 runs to the Mountaineers 25 These two team faced each other in last years World Series. What a difference a year makes, the 1984 Mountaineers won 111 games and the Hoosiers were a Wild Card team. The Mountaineers won the first game and that was their last WS win. One thing is surely going to happen in 1985 WS – a Steve will win, making it a sure bet for back-to-back Steve Championships!! Former Hoosier Gary Ward led off the 2nd with a double. Gary Gaetti hit a weak grounder to 1st allowing Ward to move to third, now with two outs. Bret Saberhagen was called for a BALK allowing Ward to score. Steve B. was seen smirking as he must have recalled the NLCS where a BALK also worked in their favor. Gifted a run, Mountaineers were not going to refuse the gift. Steve L. threw a look at the umpire that said it all. No words, just a stare. Bottom of the 3rd Ozzie Smtih coaxed a one out walk from Knucksie. Brett Butler singled to right. With runners on 1st & 3rd Tony Gwynn hit a Sac Fly to tie the game. Ryan Sandberg promptly hit a two out two run HR to left. 3-1 home team. Both teams started to get their steps in: 1 – 2 – 3 until the top of the 6th. Gary Pettis broke up the routine with a one out single. Eddie Murray rewarded him by letting him jog home via his HR to tie the score 3-3. Top of the 7th Mountaineers got another runner on and nothing else. Bottom of the 7th third baseman Ken Oberkfell worked a two out walk. With Ozzie Smith set to extend the inning, Mountaineer backstop Bob Boone would back pick Oberfkell at 1st for the final out of the inning. Boone lead off the inning. Feeling good about his defensive play, he promptly struck out. Two more outs and the home team came to bat. Bottom of the 8th Ozzie Smith hit a grounder to third baseman Gary Gaetti and reached via error. Top of the order.....Butler and Gwynn both pop out to Gaetti. They were feeling he had one more error in him. Sandberg tried Eddie Murray and was rewarded, reaching first thanks to Eddie flubbing a grounder. Now runners on the corners with two out – game tied 3-3. Charlie Hough’s day was over after 120 pitches. Steve B walks to the mound and calls on LHP Willie Hernandez. Willie was acquired in 1984 to shore down the bullpen and shine in the playoffs. Willie never saw action in the WS. Facing LH Keith Hernandez, whose weak tapper to the mound ended the threat. Top of the 9th, visiting Mountaineers were feeling something special. With two out, Frank White doubled. Gaetti looking for redemption, went quietly 6-3. Bottom of the 9th still tied 3-3 Steve L called on his bench, pulling catcher Ozzie Virgil Hoosiers HR leader – he hit 30 in 520 Pas, Bill Schroeder stepped in facing Willie H. Schroeder hit LHP .238/.323/.492 with 10HRs in 126 Abs. Easy math equation for Steve L. One swing – one run – one win. A single to center was not the hit they were looking for however, it had the lead run on 1st with two out. Ken Oberkfell K’d to end the threat. Mountaineers go quietly in the 10th. Ozzie Smith, hitting LHP well as 5 of his round trippers came off leftys in 170 Abs. Steve L got the 1+1=W as the full house erupted in calls of “Whooze Your Daddy – Hoosiers!” taking game one in 10innings 4-3. Boone whacks one to center for a run scoring out and a 2-1 lead. Gary Pettis looking to cash in K’s for the final out. Bottom of the 9th down 2-1 Robin Yount is called to PH for Ryan Sandberg Willie Hernandez is still on the mound and the bullpen is silent. Steve L’s move to PH Yount pays off as he reaches on an infield hit. Keith Hernandez then goes 5-4-3 DP the Mountaineers first of the series. Feeling better about himself, Willie Hernandez gets Kevin McReynolds to fly out to end the game. WOW! Mountaineers received EIGHT walks had four hits scoring two runs, leaving eight runners on base. SPB1-1985 WS GAME 3 Teams travel to Blue Ridge for game 3: 74 degrees, clear skies and no wind. Bloomington tabs Dennis Martinez 11-4 3.31 ERA 25 GS 2 CG (PLAY OFFS 2 GS 1 CGs 2-0 2.93 ERA) to face Scott Sanderson 11-2 1.56 ERA 17 GS 7 CG 3 SHO (PLAY OFFS 2 GS 14 IPs 0-0 1.26 ERA) The Blue Ridge Mountaineer fan base was ecstatic in welcoming the team home. The Badges from the Bronx LLC paid for the travel arrangements and lodging for the imported security. The Badges were such a hit, they formed their own company and traded marked a few slogans to boot. Now to the game....But wait, lets talk streaks. Bloomington had winning streaks of 11, 10, 9, 7, 6 and 4 5 gamer win streaks plus 8 3 game win streaks. Definitely a team that can get hot and run a streak. On the down side they also had 4 3game and 2 5game losing streaks. When they get hot, well they did win 109 games. Add one 3 and 4 game playoff win streak and you have a juggernaut. The Mountaineers were more grounded. They had a streak of 14 games when they won a game and lost a game. 7 3game win streaks, 3 4 & 5 game win streaks and one 6 and 7 game streak. On the losing side they lost 5 games twice and 3 games 3 times. Small streaks. Add the two 4 game winning streaks of the playoffs they might be able to string just enough together. Hoosiers went thru their pregame as relaxed as if they had a 2-0 game lead. Steve L said it is business as usual and this team doesn’t shake that easy. Wasting little time, bottom of the 1st Pettis walked and was doubled to third by Dwayne Murphy. Steady Eddie Murray singled Pettis in and Murphy replaced him at 3rd. Gary Ward walked to load the bases. A productive out from Frank White scored a run and had runners on the corners. Gaetti was HBP from Dennis Martinez. SS Bill Almon hit into a pitchers friend 5-4-3 to end the scoring at 2. Hoosiers once again go 1-2-3 top of the 2nd down 2-0. Tony “Run Into One” Armas certainly did and lead off the inning with a HR. Steve L had seen enough and wasn’t about to see if Dennis would stop the Mountaineers or allow a crooked number on the scoreboard. LHP Ron Guidry strolled out and took the ball from Steve L. The Bronx Badges LLC kept things moving till the of the 4th. Scott Sanderson faced the minimum thru three. Top of the order and second time facing Scott gave a slight edge to professional hitters like Brett Butler and Tony Gwynn as they both doubled. As a result the score was 3-1 hometeam. Bottom of the 5th with two out Almon walked. Run Into One moved him over with a seeing eye single to left. Bob Boone singled up the middle scoring Almon. Gary Pettis did the same scoring Armas from second. Dwyane Murphy walked to load the bases. Steady Eddie ground out to end the inning however, those two runs made it 5-1 Mountaineers. Sanderson was still mowing them down 1-2-3 in the 6th. A one out single and double chased Guidry as Steve L called on Mike Boddicker. One out and runners on 2nd & 3rd Bill Amon grounded to short scoring Frank White making it 6-1. Run Into One ran into air and K’d for the final out. Sensing a need for defense Steve B made a defensive move as Greg Gagne replaced Almon at SS. With two out Keving McReynolds reached on an infield hit. Ken Phelps was K’d to “nip it in the bud”. Top of the 8th Sanderson was still dealing, two quick outs before Ozzie Smith worked a walk from Sanderson. Brett Butler did the same – two on and two out. Steve B had seen enough from Sanderson who thre116 pitches in 7.2 innings 3h 2B 6K and two runners on. LH Willie Hernandez was summoned for this high leverage situation vs LH Tony Gwynn. Willie won getting Tony to fly to left. Bottom of the 8th and Boddicker sturck out the side however, not without a little excitement. After the first two Ks Gaetti singled to right and Gagne walked. This was the 7th walk issued by Hoosier pitchers in the game. Mr Run Into One whiffed again for the final out. Jeff Lahti came into a clean inning starting the 9th with a 6-1 lead. Learning from Joe Madden 2016 handling of closers, Steve B didn’t want to use Willie Hernandez, better to rest him for later. Dan Quisenberry and others were also available. Sandberg, Hernandez and McReynolds were getting ready to battle. Sandberg grounded out to short. Hernandez singled to left, keeping hope alive. Lahti buckled down and K’d both McReynolds and Phelps to end the game. Then Mr. Hit Em Hard, Frank White followed with another homerun – that’s right BACK-2-BACK HRs. Gary Mathews almost made it three with a deep drive to left for the 3rd out. Bottom of the 3rd was when something exciting happened. With one out Eddie Murray singled. Armas did the same so with runners on 1st and 2nd Frank White hit a productive out, runners to 2nd and 3rd with two out. Matthews gave the fans what they were used to seeing – nothing. SPB1-1985 WS GAME 5 Game 5 @ Mountaineers: 58 degrees, clear and a light breeze blowing out to left at 10 mph Hoosiers call on game 1 winner Brett Saberhagen to derail the Mountaineers and Bert “Be Home By 11” toes the rubber for the home team. Déjà vu all over again. Once again – nothing to see – top of the first 1-2-3 as the Hoosiers go quietly. Gary Pettis bunts for a single. Murphy flies out and Eddie Murray goes deep scoring two. An error by third baseman Randy Ready and single by Frank White has runners on 1st & 2nd. Gary Gaetti hits into pitchers best friend 5-4-3 to end the first, Mountaineers lead 2-0. Top of the 2nd Ketih Hernandez singles to left. Robing Yount returns the favor hitting into 4-6-3 DP. Bill Almon did his thing and HR’d to left center giving the home team a 3-0 lead. Visitors bat, Randy Ready pops out to 3rd for out #1. Ozzie Smith singles to center and Bret Butler walks. Runners on 1st and 2nd and Tony Gwynn flies to right. Ryan Sandberg pops out to second. Talk about a high leverage situation in the 3rd. That was a taxing inning for the Mountaineers. Bottom of the 3rd and Mountaineers sensed a need to score. Gary Ward singles up the middle with one out. Frank white doubled down the line and Gary Ward went to 3rd. Steve L called for an IW of Gary Ward to load the bases. Next two hitter Bill Almon and Tony Armas both possess a little pop in their bats. A gutsy call to set up the DP. The pop turned to poop and Almon hit weakly to left and Armas flied deep to center for the 3rd out. Now the momentum swung to the favor of the Hoosiers. Keith Hernandez walked to open the 4th inning. LF Robin Yount singled up the middle and Hernandez moved to second. Tim Flannery hit an F8. Ozzie Virgil went F9 however, Hernandez moved to 3rd and Rand Ready wasn’t ready for the spotlight and hit 4- 3 for the final out. Mountaineers went quietly again in the 4th. Top of the 5th Ozzie Smith lead off with a single to right. Bret Butler did the same to left moving Ozzie to 3rd. Runners on the corners nobody out, Tony Gwynn hit an unproductive out to center. Ryan Sandberg drove in the Hoosiers first run with a Sac Fly to right. Gary Ward’s errant throw allowed Bret Butler to move to second. Hoosier faithful were whooping it up until Keith Hernandez grounded out 6-3 for out #3. Nothing to see in the 6th from either side. A lead off single resulted in bumpkiss as the next three hitters Ozzie Smith, Brett Butler and Tony Gwynn made outs. Bottom of the 7th Dwyane Murphy homered to center raising the score to 4-1 home team. A one out single, stolen base and deep fly had Gary Ward on 3rd with two outs and that’s where he stayed. Top of the 8th had Robin Yount hit a two out single and stayed there as he watched Tim Flannery strike out. Mr Run Into One did just that in the 8th making it 5-1. A 4 run lead had even the most skeptical Mountaineer fans in a somber mood. Aint over till its over was shouted by both sets of fans. There was no “can’t see me” hand waves or point to ring fingers on the field or in the stands.
