vs. Tigers
SPB1-1986 AL SECOND ROUND SERIES GAME 1
Game One - Collierstown (90-72) who had beaten the Rockford Forest Cities in an exciting 7 game set,
came in to take on the Tigers for the ALCS series. The Tigers (99-63) had won the bye in the first round
and had finished 2nd to the Bloomington Hoosiers in the A.L. The Highlanders chose Andy McGaffigan to
open the series. Andy had sported an 11-5 record, with 3.89 ERA,during the regular season. He was
somewhat of a surprise starter to open this series, as only 8 of his 67 regular season games were as
a starting pitcher. His opponent was Frankfort's ace Doc Gooden, who was 17-11, with a 2.85 ERA
during the year.
Heading into a scoreless bottom of the 2nd, Chili Davis led off drawing a walk off McGaffigan, and
Jim Morrison singled sending Davis to 3rd. But Carmen Castillo hit into a DP, while Davis scored
making it a 1-0 Frankfort lead. McGaffigan then got HoJo to fly out ending the inning. Both pitchers
threw scoreless ball through the top of the 6th inning. Gooden was looking sharp, as he had only given
up a first inning single to Ron Oester. He had only allowed one other baserunner, a 3rd inning, one
out walk to SS Dave Anderson, who was quickly erased when Rickey Henderson hit into a DP. In the bottom
of 6, Johnny Ray led off with a double, and Joe Carter flew out to left. Next, George Brett coaxed a walk,
as did Davis to load the sacks. Mgr. Moore headed out for a meeting with his pitcher, and decided to leave
him in. Morrison cracked a double that scored 2 more, with Davis holding at third. Castillo singled scoring
Chili with the 3rd run of the inning. Exit Andy M.; enter Greg Minton.
Willie Wilson ran for Castillo, and quickly struck out HoJo. Wilson swiped 2nd. But Randy Kutcher grounded
out to end the threat. Frankfort now leads 4-0. Wilson stayed in the game at CF, with Kutcher moving to LF,
in place of Castillo. Roy Smalley also took over SS for Johnson. Gooden retired 3 straight in the 7th.
Minton gave up a hit and walk in the 7th, but got out with no damage done. Doc threw another scoreless
frame in the 8th, but there was a runner thanks to a 2 out error by Smalley. Minton then gave up a solo
HR to Morrison, leading off in the bottom of the 8th. Wilson flew out, but then Smalley sent another Minton
pitch sailing deep over the distant CF wall, and that was all for Minton. Ed Whitson came on for Collierstown.
He gave up a single and a walk, but nothing came of it. Trailing 6-0 now, Gooden got PH Stan Javier on a ground
out, then struck out Henderson and Oester to end a masterful 1 hitter. Gooden just does not get any sharper
than that! He walked only the one, and fanned six in this masterpiece. Frankfort leads the series 1 game
to zero. The hometown fans are quite elated!

Game Two - Collierstown selects Joaquin Andujar (13-9, 4.05 ERA) for game two.
And Frankfort goes with Jose Guzman (14-8, 3.17 ERA) to match up with him.
Tigers take a quick 1-0 lead in their half of the first thanks to walks to Joe Carter and George Brett,
followed by a run scoring hit from Jim Morrison. But Highlanders quickly answer with a run of their own
in the top of the 3rd to tie it up. Johnny Grubb doubled to lead off the Highlanders 3rd, and Dave Anderson
bunted him to 3rd. Ricky Henderson then singled him in. And the Tigers came right back when George Brett
cracked a 2 out circuit shot in their half of the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead. Andjuar leaves for a PH in the
top of the 7th still trailing 2-1. Steve Bedrosian takes his place for the Frankfort 7th. He gives up a
couple of hits, and a stolen base, but gets through the 7th. Guzman pitches a scoreless 8th. Then in the
Tigers 8th, Morrison reaches the seats on a hanging curve from Bedrosian, making it a 3-1 game. Dave Righetti
comes in for the save, but fails in his first attempt in this series, and by the time the Highlanders finish
the 9th, they have scored twice to tie the game. Lance Parrish reached Righetti for a lead off single, then
an error by SS Smalley puts 2 runners on with no outs. Andres Galarraga then comes up as a PH and he
promptly raps a double to score a run making it 3-2. And Willie Upshaw, who reached on the error holds at
third. Infield comes in for Frankfort and it pays off when Larry Herndon sends a hot grounder to SS, but
this time Smalley quickly grabs it and throws home to nail Upshaw trying to score! Johnny Grubb then sends
a fly ball to LF, and Carmen Castillo tracks it down and sends a strong throw to the plate. But catcher Tim
Laudner fumbles the ball, Galarraga is safe,with Herndon taking 2nd, and the game is tied. Tom Brookens
follows with another single to LF, but this time the strong throw from Castillo nails Herndon at home,
retiring the side, and a big whoop goes up from the hometown fans, as that throw was a true life saver!
Willie Wilson leads off the Tigers in the bottom of the inning, and Bedrosian walks him. Good bye Steve,
and hello to closer Lee Smith for the Highlanders. Wilson quickly swipes 2nd. Johnny Ray grounds to SS,
and Wilson has to hold. Joe Carter follows sending a fly ball deep enough to CF that allows Wilson to
hustle to third. Brett steps up, and Smiths first pitch his the fastball. George plays hero hitting
that ball into the RF bleachers for a game winning walk-off HR, his 2nd of the game! Frankfort fans
leave the park in total ecstasy. Frankfort leads series 2 games to none.

SPB1-1986 AL SECOND ROUND SERIES GAME 6
Game Six - Jose Guzman for Frankfort and Joaquin Andujar for N.Y. as starters. Both making their 2nd
start of the series. Collierstown came out swinging and swiftly knocked out Tiger starter Guzman in the
2nd inning by scoring 4 runs. They scored in the opening frame when Ricky Henderson singled and quickly
swiped 2nd. Ron Oester then bunted him safely to 3rd. And Tony Phillips squeezed him home with a perfect
bunt. Then in the 2nd they piled on 3 more runs before Guzman could get 3 outs. Willie Upshaw and Andres
Galarraga led off the 2nd by drawing walks. Guzman got Gary Redus with a strikeout, and Johnny Grubb flew
to LF with Upshaw taking 3rd. Tom Brookens drove in a run with a base hit, while Andres stopped at second.
Henderson followed with a walk to load the bases, and Oester followed with a sharp single that scored
runs 3 & 4. Good bye Guzman! Hello Lamar Hoyt. N.Y. starter Andujar blanked the Tigers through 3,
and the home fans were getting restless. In the 4th, the Tigers finally got on the board. Chili Davis
singled to lead off the inning, George Brett grounded out with Davis taking 2nd. Jim Morrison then came
through with a run scoring hit. Then in the 5th the Highlanders managed to load the bases with 2 out,
but Hoyt got Grubb on a pop up to SS. In the bottom of the 5th, the Tigers, Len Matuszek led off and drew
a walk, and Willie Wilson followed with a sharp single that sent Len to third. Dwight Lowry then hit a
liner to RF which Grubb caught, but Matuszek scored making it 4-2. Andujar struck out Johnny Ray for out # 2.
Joe Carter, in a terrible slump, then singled and Willie playing it safe took 2nd. Chili then caught hold
of a hanging curve from Andujar and drove it deep into right center for a 2 run triple that tied the game.
McGaffigan replaced Andujar, and proceeded to walk Brett. But he got the dangerous Morrison on a liner that
SS Brookens snagged to end the threat. Into the sixth went Hoyt and he quickly retired the first 2 hitters.
But Oester doubled, and Phillips followed with another 2 base hit to make it 5-4 in favor of Collierstown.
McGaffigan in the bottom of the 6th, struck out HoJo. But Matuszek teed off on a fastball and drove it deep
into the RF bleachers to tie it up once again. Wilson followed with another hit, and Carmen Castillo came
up as a pinch batter for Lowry. In came Steve Bedrosian. On his first pitch, Wilson took off and swiped
2nd base. Bedrosian then balked and Wilson was awarded third base. Castillo then singled to RF with Willie
racing home with the go ahead run, at 6-5. Castillo then was caught stealing, and Ray struck out to end
the inning. Ray Searage entered for the 7th, and struck out Upshaw. Then Tom Niedenfuer came out of the
pen to face the right-handers. He struck out Galarraga, then got Redus with a grounder to 2nd. In the
Tigers 8th, Bedrosian gave up 1 out hits to Davis and Brett, but Morrison went down swinging, and HoJo
flew out to CF.
In the 8th, Roy Smalley came on for the Tigers at SS, and Gary Lucas came in to pitch. Manager Moore then
sent up Larry Herndon to bat for Grubb, and Herndon came through with a booming double to start it.
Out came Lucas, and Eric King replaced him. But King walked PH Bip Roberts, and that was time for Righetti
to come in to see if he could shut it down. Ricky Henderson flew out. Dave Anderson then PH for Oester,
and he quickly hit a hard grounder to Smalley that Roy turned into a big DP to end the threat. Jeff Russell
took the hill for the Highlanders in the 9th, and quickly set the Tigers down 1-2-3. Randy Kutcher then took
over in LF for the Tigers in the bottom of the 9th. Righetti lost lead off man Phillips, who walked.
Stan Javier came in to run the bases in place of Phillips. Lance Parrish then surprised everyone when
the big power hitting catcher bunted Javier to 2nd. Willie Upshaw then caught hold of a Righetti fast one,
and drove it deep into LF where Kutcher finally caught up with it right at the fence, but Upshaw alertly
hustled to 3rd. A sigh of relief from the Frankfort fans on that blast which was finally hauled in!
Righetti settled down, and struck out Galarraga on a full count to end the game. And the Tigers and
Highlanders each have 3 wins. Frankfort managed to hang on and head to a big 7th game.

SPB1-1986 AL SECOND ROUND SERIES GAME 7
Game Seven - Tigers chose Storm Davis to make his first start in this game, as Gooden was still tired with only 2
days rest. The Highlanders went with Floyd Youmans who had won his first start of this series in game 3. The
Highlanders got off to a quick start scoring in the first inning off Davis. With one out Oester walked. and
Tony Phillips doubled setting 2 in scoring position. Parrish followed with a sac. fly to LF that was deep enough
for Oester to come in with the first run of the game. Davis then struck out Upshaw.to end the top of the first.
The Tigers got right back in it in their half of the opening inning. With one out Chili drew a base on balls.
Brett grounded to the mound and Chili took 2nd. Jim Morrison then singled scoring Chili and we had a tie after
1 inning. Both starters did not allow any more runs through the 4th inning. With the Highlanders up in the 5th,
Oester again drew a lead off walk and took 2nd on a passed ball. Tony Phillips played the big man, by catching a
hanging curve from Davis that he deposited over the LF fence into the bleachers. N.Y. 3 Tigers 1. Youmans quickly
retired 3 straight in his 5th inning of work. In the 6th, N.Y. was at it again. Gary Redus led off with hit, and
advanced to second when an error by Castillo in LF saw him take the extra base. Lefty Ray Searage then came in for
the Tigers, replacing Storm. He struck out the dangerous Grubb. Redus then surprised everyone when he took off and
stole third. Brookens followed with a fly to LF that saw Redus score making it a 4-1 lead for New York. Youmans
retired the Tigers in the 6th and 7th. Searage got the first 2 hitters in the 7th, then Eric King came on to pitch
and got the third out. King then got through a scoreless top of the 8th, but time was running out for the home town
Tigers. In the 8th, Mike Kingery and Stan Javier replaced Redus and Grubb in left and right fields. Morrison led
off for the Tigers and reached first on an error by Youmans. Castillo then singled and Morrison made it to 3rd.
Bedrosian replaced Youmans on the mound. Randy Kutcher then came in to bat for HoJo. He sent a hard grounder to
short that Brookens turned into a quick double play as Morrison scored. Wilson then grounded out. The score at
4-2 now, heading into the 9th. Kutcher stayed in at SS for the Tigers. Oester then doubled leading off the 9th.
King struck out Phillips. But Parrish singled and Oester came home with run # 5. King got the next 2, and it
looked bleak. In came Lee Smith to try and nail down the win for the Highlanders. Joe Carter then surprised the
home crowed as he got his 1st XBH hit, a double to start things off. Bill Madlock came to the plate as a PH,
but Smith struck him out. Ray then grounded out with Carter advancing to third. Up stepped Chili Davis,
Frankfort's top hitter this series. But Smith prevailed striking him out with his fast one, earning him his
third save of the series. Now the Highlanders will move on to the next round, while the Tigers go home to stay.
