FOREST CITYS HOLD OFF TRIANGLES 5–3 IN SERIES OPENER
Royals Stadium, Oct. 5, 1988 — The Forest Citys struck early, survived a furious sixth‑inning push, and rode
Rick Sutcliffe’s sturdy eight‑inning outing to a 5–3 win over the Triangles in Game 1.
Forest City center fielder Phil Bradley set the tone with a four‑hit night, including a double and three singles,
sparking rallies in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th innings. The early breakthrough came in the second when Nick Esasky
launched a solo homer to left, giving the Citys a 1–0 lead. An inning later, Randy Jordan tripled home Bradley to
extend the margin, and in the fourth, Steve Buechele blew the game open with a two‑run blast to left‑center,
pushing the lead to 4–0.
Sutcliffe cruised through five scoreless frames before the Triangles finally broke through in the sixth. After
Bob Brenly singled and Vance Law walked, Wally Joyner ripped a two‑run double to right‑center and advanced to third
on an error. Fred Lynn followed with a groundout that plated Joyner, trimming the deficit to 4–3. Sutcliffe steadied
himself, retiring the next two hitters to preserve the lead.
Forest City answered immediately in the seventh when Bradley doubled and scored on Tom Brunansky’s triple to
right‑center, restoring a two‑run cushion. From there, Sutcliffe and closer José Rijo slammed the door, with Rijo
working a clean ninth for the save.
The Triangles managed just six hits, with Joyner’s two‑run double the lone extra‑base knock. Glavine absorbed the loss,
allowing 10 hits and five runs over six innings.
Forest City leads the series 1–0 as the clubs return to Royals Stadium for Game 2.

TRIANGLES STRIKE EARLY, HOLD OFF FOREST CITYS TO EVEN SERIES
Royals Stadium, Oct. 6, 1988 — A three‑run first inning proved decisive as the Triangles rode early offense and
strong pitching from Greg Maddux to a 4–2 victory over the Forest Citys, knotting the series at one game apiece.
Forest City grabbed a quick 1–0 lead in the top of the first when Terry Puhl and Lou Whitaker executed a double
steal, setting up Tom Brunansky’s RBI groundout. But the Triangles immediately countered. Barry Larkin opened the bottom half with a ringing double,
advanced on a passed ball, and scored when Rubén Sierra reached on a throwing error. Sierra stole second, and Wally Joyner followed with a run‑scoring
double to left‑center. Moments later, Bill Lind punched a single to center to bring home Joyner, giving the Triangles a 3–1 advantage.
Maddux settled in from there, scattering seven hits over 6⅔ innings while striking out six. He repeatedly pitched
out of trouble, stranding runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Forest City left 13
men on base overall, including two in the ninth.
The Triangles added an insurance run in the fifth when Joyner reached on an error and later scored on Lind’s third
hit of the night, stretching the lead to 4–1. Lind finished with three RBI, continuing his hot start to the series.
Forest City mounted a final push in the ninth. Pinch‑hitter Joe Orsulak beat out an infield single, Phil Bradley
followed with his second hit, and a balk by reliever Steve Plunk moved both runners into scoring position. Plunk
walked Brunansky and John Kruk, forcing in a run to make it 4–2, but he induced Nick Esasky to ground out to second to end the threat.
Triangles relievers Dave Ward and Plunk combined for the final seven outs, preserving Maddux’s win.
The series continues tomorrow with Game 3, now tied 1–1.

FOREST CITYS ERUPT IN THIRD, TAKE GAME 3 WITH 7–5 WIN
Fulton County Stadium, Oct. 8, 1988 — A five‑run third inning flipped the game on its head and powered the
Forest Citys to a 7–5 victory over the Triangles, giving them a 2–1 edge in the series.
The Triangles struck first when Barry Larkin reached on an error and scored on Wally Joyner’s two‑out
single up the middle. But Forest City answered with a thunderous rally in the bottom of the third that
chased starter Terry Clark and turned the game permanently in their favor.
After Phil Bradley walked and Joe Orsulak bunted him over, Lou Whitaker drew a walk to set the table.
Tom Brunansky tied the game with a flare down the right‑field line, and John Kruk followed with a sacrifice
fly to give Forest City its first lead. Clark unraveled from there, issuing a walk to Nick Esasky, uncorking a wild pitch, and intentionally
walking Rance Mulliniks to load the bases. Shawon Dunston delivered the crushing blow — a two‑run double to deep center — and Jamie Quirk
added an RBI single off reliever Terry to cap the five‑run outburst.
The Triangles clawed back with two in the fourth, highlighted by Kurt Stillwell’s RBI double and Dwayne White’s
RBI single, trimming the deficit to 5–3. Joyner doubled home Larkin in the fifth to make it 5–4, but Kruk
immediately answered with a towering solo homer to right in the bottom half.
Forest City added insurance in the eighth when Dunston ripped a triple and scored on Bradley’s sacrifice fly,
stretching the lead to 7–4.
The Triangles mounted one last push in the ninth. White doubled, and pinch‑hitter Steve Lyons singled him home
to make it 7–5. But closer José Rijo induced a double play and a groundout to end the threat and secure his second save of the series.
Forest City starter Mike Fraser battled through five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) while
striking out three. The bullpen trio of Montgomery, Perry, and Rijo held the line over the final four frames.
Joyner and Stillwell each had two hits for the Triangles, while Dunston led Forest City with a double, triple, and two RBI.
The series continues tomorrow with Game 4, Forest City now holding the advantage.

Fulton County Stadium, Oct. 9, 1988 — The Triangles delivered a complete performance on both sides of the ball,
riding Tom Glavine’s seven shutout innings and a relentless 13‑hit attack to a 7–0 victory over the Forest Citys,
tying the series at two games apiece.
Glavine was sharp from the outset, scattering six hits, walking only two, and striking out three. He worked out
of early traffic in the first and fifth innings, then settled into a smooth rhythm as the Forest City bats fell
silent. Reliever Tim Crews finished the job with two perfect innings and three strikeouts.
The Triangles offense wasted no time. Barry Larkin opened the game with a ringing double and scored moments
later when Rubén Sierra grounded into a double play. They added two more in the second: Dwayne White doubled,
Bill Lind singled him home, and Gary Ward followed with an RBI single after a balk moved Lind into scoring position.
Forest City never mounted a sustained threat. Their best chance came in the third when Lou Speier doubled and
Randy Jordan singled, but Speier was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. From there, Glavine retired 12
of the next 15 hitters.
The Triangles broke the game open in the seventh. Ward singled, Sierra added a base hit, and after an intentional
walk to Wally Joyner, Dickie Thon punched a two‑run single up the middle. White then delivered the knockout
blow — a two‑run double to right‑center, his fourth hit of the afternoon — stretching the lead to 7–0.
White finished 4‑for‑4 with two doubles and two RBI, while Lind and Ward each added two hits. Forest City
managed just six singles and never advanced a runner past second after the third inning.
The series now heads to a pivotal Game 5 with momentum swinging back toward the Triangles.

MADDUX MASTERFUL AS TRIANGLES TAKE 3–2 SERIES LEAD WITH 4–1 WIN
Fulton County Stadium, Oct. 10, 1988 — Greg Maddux delivered a complete‑game gem and Dwayne White
supplied the thunder as the Triangles beat the Forest Citys 4–1 in Game 5, moving within one win of the series.
Maddux was in full command all afternoon, scattering six hits, walking just two, and striking out three.
He faced only three batters over the minimum through five innings and never allowed more than one baserunner
in any frame until the ninth. His only blemish came on Tom Brunansky’s solo homer with the game already in hand.
The Triangles finally broke a scoreless duel in the sixth. After White walked and advanced on a balk,
Bill Lind punched a single through the right side to bring him home. Moments later, Rubén Sierra ripped
a double down the first‑base line, scoring Barry Larkin and giving the Triangles a 2–0 lead.
They struck again in the seventh when Kurt Stillwell doubled and White followed by launching a towering
two‑run homer to right, stretching the margin to 4–0. White finished the day 2‑for‑3 with a double, homer,
walk, and two RBI, continuing his torrid series.
Forest City never solved Maddux. Their best chance came in the eighth when Rance Mulliniks doubled and
Damon Berryhill singled him to third, but a fielder’s choice at the plate and a flyout ended the threat. Brunansky’s ninth‑inning blast merely spoiled the shutout.
Rick Sutcliffe took the loss, allowing four runs over six innings, undone by a balk, a wild pitch,
and several well‑timed Triangles swings.
With the win, the Triangles seize a 3–2 edge as the series shifts back to Royals Stadium for Game 6.

TRIANGLES ERUPT FOR 13‑RUN SECOND, ROUT FOREST CITYS 14–2 TO CLINCH SERIES
Royals Stadium, Oct. 12, 1988 — The Triangles turned Game 6 into a shockwave, detonating for 13
runs in the second inning and cruising to a 14–2 victory over the Forest Citys to capture the series
in emphatic fashion.
What began as a tight 1–1 game after the top of the second instantly became a runaway. Forest City
starter Rick Sutcliffe was battered for six runs in the inning’s opening moments, and reliever José
Ontiveros fared no better, allowing five more before recording an out. By the time the dust settled,
the Triangles had sent 17 men to the plate, collected eight hits, drew two walks, benefited from three
errors, and turned a modest deficit into a 14–2 stranglehold.
The inning’s damage came from every corner of the lineup. Kurt Stillwell ripped two doubles in the frame,
driving in three. Bob Brenly added a two‑run double and an RBI single. Wally Joyner tripled home a run.
Fred Lynn capped the explosion with a towering two‑run homer — his second blast in as many innings — giving
him three RBI on the day. Even routine plays unraveled for Forest City, with errors by Shawon Dunston,
Lou Whitaker, and pitcher Ken Forsch extending the inning and fueling the avalanche.
Forest City had briefly taken a 2–1 lead in the top half of the inning on RBI hits from Whitaker and Dunston,
but the advantage lasted only minutes.
Triangles starter Mike Scott made sure the lead never wavered. Mixing power and precision, he tossed a complete
game, allowing just six hits and one earned run while striking out nine. He retired 14 of the final 16
batters he faced.
Offensively, the Triangles finished with 11 hits, highlighted by Lynn’s two homers, Stillwell’s pair of doubles,
and Brenly’s three RBI. Lind reached base three times and scored twice, while Larkin added two runs and a stolen base.
Forest City mustered only scattered singles after the second inning, their final 21 outs coming without a run.
With the 14–2 victory, the Triangles close out the series in six games, punctuating their championship run with
one of the most explosive innings in postseason history.
