A.L.Champions Northwestern Wildcats vs. N.L.Champions St.Louis Perfectos
SPB100-1911 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
On a crisp October day, the 1911 World Series between the defending champion Northwestern
Wildcats and the St. Louis Perfectos began. Doc White, who went 18-9 in the regular season
started for the Wildcats and he was opposed by Ed Walsh who posted a 23-12 mark. Danny Murphy
of the Perfectos led off the game with a triple to right center field and then scored on an
infield out by Jimmy Austin. The Cats loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first
but were unable to score. After a single by Al Bridwell and a sacrifice, Johnny Bates tied the
game with an RBI single. St. Louis 2B Eddie Collins tripled in two runs in the 4th but was then
thrown out on the front end of a double steal but the Perfectos scored again in the inning on an
RBI single by Bill Raridan. Northwestern loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fourth but
couldn't score. St. Louis pounded on White for four more runs in the 5th as it became obvious
this was not Doc's day and the Wildcat defense was also porous as they committed four errors in
the first five innings. Jack Lelivelt doubled in two runs in the bottom of the 6th but the Cats
left the bases loaded once again as the inning ended. Wahoo Crawford's error in the 7th let in
another Northwestern run and a second scored on an infield out making it an 8-5 game but that is
how it ended. The big stats were 13 Wildcats left on base and three St. Louis double plays.

Russ Ford who won a league high 27 games in the regular season was opposed by the Wildcats'
Slim Sallee and his 15-14 mark in Game Two. St. Louis struck early again by loading the bases
in the top of the first and scored two runs on Jack Barry's single and Crawford singled in
another run in the second. A Clyde Engle sac fly got one run back in the bottom of the second.
Engle knocked in another run in the bottom of the 4th and then Ping Bodie tied it up with a SF.
In the 6th inning, Bill Sweeney singled, stole second and was driven home by Bodie to give the
Cats a 4-3 lead but Crawford's two-run double in the seventh gave the lead back to St. Louis and
Wahoo scored shortly thereafter on an Ed Konetchy RBI single. A fumbled grounder by Nap Lajoie
in the 8th led to another SL run in the top of the 8th. Jay Kirke knocked in a run on the bottom
of the inning to make the score 7-5. In the bottom of the 9th Lajoie doubled in a run and Engle
then tied the score with an RBI single. Lelivelt sent the home crowd home with happy as he won
it in thrilling fashion with a run-scoring base hit.

The scene moved to Griffin Stadium for Game Three which pitted Long Tom Hughes and his
10-10 record against Bobby Keefe who was 16-13. The Perfects continued their first inning
thunder with an RBI single by Crawford plating Danny Murphy. Lelivelt tied it in the
bottom of the 2nd with an RBI single and Engle then put the Cats ahead with a SF. Chief
Meyers was tossed out at the plate to end the inning as Northwestern tried unsuccessfully
to pad the lead. Wahoo Crawford continued his hot hitting with this 8th hit of the series,
doubling home the tying run in the bottom of the third and then Konetchy doubled home two more
to give SL the lead. Crawford (again) singled to open the 5th, moved to 2nd on a ground out
and scored on a single by Konetchy. The Perfectos plated another run in the 8th to make it
6-2 and that is how it ended. St. Louis was now up two games to one.

Game Four saw a return of Ed Walsh to face Hooks Wiltse who went 10-8 in the regular season.
The script remained the same as SL scored in the first inning, this time on a two-run homer by
who else, Wahoo Crawford. The Northwestern manager tried to deal with Crawford by intentionally
walking him with one out and a man on second in the third inning but Konetchy crossed him up by
hitting a two-run triple. Duffy Lewis' three run homer in the 4th got the Cats back to within a
run but it ended 4-3 and the defending champs were facing elimination.

Game Five pitted Ford against White but the same sorry (from the point of view of the Wildcats)
story repeated itself as Crawford had a first inning run scoring triple. Ford squeezed in the
second SL run in the in the second inning and Jimmy Austin singled home another run. Then Mr.
Crawford continued his torrid hitting with his second triple of the game to plate another run
and Collins followed with an RBI single and it was 5-0 after just two innings. Doc White hit a
solo homer in the 3rd but he wasn't doing a very good at his main job of pitching. Jack Barry's
two-run homer in the 4th pretty much put the game on ice as it ended 7-1 and the Perfectos were
world champs.
The series MVP hands down was Wahoo Crawford who hit .571 with 12 hits including three doubles, two
triples and a homer and knocked in 11 runs. Konetchy hit .474 with 9 hits and Murphy .421 with 8 hits.
Big Ed Walsh won his two stars while Ford and Hughes each won a game and pitched well.
On the downside the Wildcat pitching staff stunk up the place as they only had one quality start out of
five and that was only because Slim Sallee gave up four unearned runs in his start and three earned in
seven plus innings. St. Louis scored in the first inning of every game which pit the Cats in the hole
throughout the series. Northwestern led the league in staff ERA during the regular season but you
never would have known it based on this series. Congratulations to the Perfectos on a great season
and a well deserved championship.
