A.L.Champions Rossville Hornets vs. N.L.Champions Salzburg Bishops
SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
It was matchup of staff aces, Warren Spahn of the Hornets against Camilo Pascual of the
Bishops, and that’s the way it played—for one inning. After a 1-2-3 1st, Pascual started
the 2nd by giving up a double to Ernie Banks, who scored on Duke Snider’s single, followed
by Gil Hodges 2-run homer for a quick Rossville 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, Spahn
got two outs before “Slugging Roy” McMillan drove a pitch into the bleachers, a 2-run shot.
The Hornets added a run on Snider’s second rbi single of the game. McMillan brought the
Bishops back with a single in the 4th, but Rossville added two more in the 6th, on a sac
fly and a rare Eddie Mathews error. Meanwhile, the Bishops continued to chip away, making
it 6-4 in the 6th as Bob Cerv clouted a lead-off home run, 6-5 in the 7th on an rbi-single
on Jensen (who reported that his fear of air travel might lead him to sit out the 1960
season for the Bishops). Then, Kent Hadley led off the 9th with a triple off former Bishop
Willard Schmidt, who scored on Gary Geiger’s pinch fly to end regulation play with the game
tied 6-6. Bill Henry pitched shutout ball for two innings, then passed the mound work over
to young Bill Monbouquette for the 12th inning. Minoso began the frame with a single, but
was erased by a double play. Duke Snider then doubled, moved to third on Mathews’ second
error of the game, then scored on Del Crandall’s 2-run single. Vic Wertz then followed with
a towering 3-run drive to put stake the Hornets to an invincible 11-6 lead. Jerry Walker
took the hill for the easy 3 outs to end the game, struck out Jensen, but then walked Mathews,
gave up a single to Bob Cerv, then a 3-run homer to Jim Baxes, making it 11-9. Felix Mantilla
and pinch-hitter Bennie Daniels both singled, bringing on Joe Nuxhall, who promptly surrendered
a single to Geiger, making it 11-10. With runners on first and third and 2 outs, Jack Meyer
came on and coaxed Sherm Lollar to fly to left, ending it.
Rossville 11 Salzburg 10. Rossville wins game 1 in 12. Winning pitcher: Marshall Bridges,
Losing Pitcher: Bill Monbouquette. Save: Jack Meyer. HR: Hodges, Wertz, McMillan, Cerv, Baxes

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
Hoyt Wilhelm of Rossville went up against Art Ditmar of the Bishops in what also
looked like a pitchers’ duel, and this time actually played out as such. After the
minimum number of batters came up in both halves of the 1st inning, Ernie Banks and
Duke Snider put two singles together, with Banks scoring on a ground ball, and Del
Crandall doubling in Snider, for a 2-0 Hornets lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, Ted
Williams wasted no time depositing Wilhelm’s 3rd pitch into the centerfield bleachers.
From there the starters buckled down. Ditmar didn’t allow another run through 7.
Wilhelm sailed through 7 but began to struggle in the 8th. Sherm Lollar doubled with
one out, moved to third on a single by Mathews and scored on Jensen’s single, tying
the score. A sequence of relievers held the Hornets at bay, and Jack Meyer did the same
for them. Then, Sherm Lollar led off the bottom of the 12th with a single. Joe Nuxhall
was brought in, and after coaxing Mathews to fly out harmlessly to left, Ted Williams
stroked his 2nd home run of the game, a 2-run shot to end it and hand rookie Jerry Casale
the victory.
Salzburg 4 Rossville 2. Salzburg wins game 2 in 12.

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 3
In the third game the phenomenal Roger Craig faced the solid Billy Pierce, and this
time Pierce got the better of the Bishops. Craig had nothing of his regular season
form, giving up 5 runs in the 1st two innings, mostly on wildness and infield hits.
Then, in the 5th, with Koufax on the mound, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, and Hammerin’
Billy Klaus hit back-to-back-to-back home runs, padding the lead to 8-0. Ray Boone
delivered a 2-run bomb in the 6th, and the Bishops eventually outhit the Hornets
11-10, but the final score held up as 8-2 in Rossville’s favor.
Rossville 8 Salzburg 2. Rossville is up 2 games to 1.
Winning Pitcher: Billy Pierce. Losing Pitcher: Roger Craig.
Home Runs: Ray Boone, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges (2), Billy Klaus.

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 4
Although he let Game 1 get away from him, young Bill Monbouquette came out to start
the 4th game against Hornets ace Warren Spahn. Both pitchers pitched strongly, but
errors began to due undermine Spahn’s effort in the 3rd. Mantilla led off by reaching
on an error by Ernie Banks, steals second, is sacrified to 3rd and scores on Geiger’s
single. After Lollar singles Geiger to 3rd, Geiger scores on a Spahn wild pitch, for
a Salzburg 2-0 lead. Both pitchers held things at bay until the 7th. Billy Martin
singled to lead off and looked to be stranded, but rookie Geiger cranked his own first
homer of the series, making it 4-0. Monbouquette held on for a complete game, 3-hit shutout.
Salzburg 4 Rossville 0. Series tied at 2 games apiece.
Winning Pitcher: Bill Monbouquette. Losing Pitcher: Warren Spahn.

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 5
Game 1 starter Camilo Pascual faced Game 2 starter Hoyt Wilhelm in the final game
played in Rossville. Salzburg drew first blood with a ground single scoring Geiger
with the 1st run. Rossville tied it at 1 in the 2nd on Duke Snider’s 2nd homer of
the series. Minnie Minoso launched a homer in the 4th, making it 2-1, and Billy Klaus
made it 3-1 with his second home run of the series. The Bishops clawed back to tie
with Jackie Jensen’s 1st home run of the series, a 2-run shot. But, Pascual could
not hold the tie, giving up two singles to start the 6th, balking them forward a base,
and giving up 2 runs on sacrifice flies. Sherm Lollar’s 7th inning homer made it 5-4,
but that is how it ended, as Bridges closed it out.
Rossville 5 Salzburg 4. Rossville leads series 3 games to 2.
Winning Pitcher: Hoyt Wilhelm. Losing Pitcher: Camilo Pascual. Save: Marshall Bridges.
Home Runs: Lollar, Jensen, Minoso, Snider (2), and Klaus (2).

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 6
With the Untersberg glistening in the sunlight, Game 3 winner Billy Pierce faced
off against Game 2 starter Art Ditmar. This time Salzburg left no doubt. After Ditmar
surrendered a solo home run to Charlie Neal in the 1st, the Bishops came storming back.
Geiger led off with a single, scored to tie on Lollar’s double, Jensen walked, and
Hadley doubled in Lollar. In the 2nd, Geiger singled in Mantilla, making it 3-1. Billy
Martin homered to start the 4th. Minoso’s 2nd series home run halved the score to 4-2,
but Cerv’s double in the bottom of the inning made it 5-2. With the help of Bill Henry
in the last two innings, Ditmar held the Hornets at bay.
Salzburg 5 Rossville 2. Series tied at 3 games apiece.
Winning Pitcher: Art Ditmar. Losing Pitcher; Billy Pierce. Save; Bill Henry.
Home Run: Minnie Minoso (2), Charlie Neal.

SPB2-1959 WORLD SERIES GAME 7
Warren Spahn faced off against rookie Jerry Casale in Game 7, and the Hornets helped
him by striking first, as Gil Hodges cranked his 3rd home run of the series, in the
2nd inning. The Bishops answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Jim Baxes doubled
and scored on Roy McMillan’s triple. The Hornets jumped out convincingly in the 5th,
as Del Crandall drilled a 2-run homer. The 6th inning proved crucial, though, as Eddie
Mathews led off with a single, and Ted Williams delivered his own 3rd home run to tie
the score. Another error by Ernie Banks put Jensen on, and he eventually came around
to score on a sac fly, to take a 4-3 lead. In the 7th, with Roger Craig on the mound,
Klaus doubled and Crandall cranked a 2-out, 2-run homer to retake the lead 5-4. In the
seventh, former Bishop Willard Schmidt was roughed up for a tying run. With one out,
Mathews singled again, moved to second on a walk to Williams, and scored on Jensen’s single.
Neither team scored in the 8th, the Bishops profiting from sterling infield play by
Baxes, and Humberto Robinson bailed out Schmidt to keep the score tied. IN the top of
the 9th, Bill Henry—who had come on after Crandall’s 2nd homer, struck out Hodges, gave
up a walk to Klaus, struck out Lynch, and induced the dangerous Crandall to fly out to
Cerv in center. Robinson stayed on the mound for the bottom of the 9th. Williams walked,
but was forced at 2nd. Baxes struck out, but then pinch-hitter George Crowe hit safely
for the first time, driving Jensen to 3rd with a double. Sensing danger, even with two
outs, Robinson walked McMillan to load the bases. The last lefty on the bench, reserve
catcher Russ Nixon came to the plate, and drove Robinson’s second pitch into left field,
scoring Jensen with the game, and series, winner.
Salzburg 6 Rossville 5. Salzburg wins series 4 games to 3.
Winning Pitcher: Bill Henry. Losing Pitcher: Humberto Robinson.
Home Runs: Hodges (3), Del Crandall, 2 , Williams (3)
It was a remarkable series. The most dangerous players for each team, Ernie Banks and
Eddie Mathews were held at bay. Banks hit .167 with just a double to show, and striking
out 4 times. Eddie Mathews also failed to homer, also hit .167, though he did draw 4 walks
and score 3 runs, but also had no extra base hits. Worse, both players made crucial errors
that cost their teams games.
More predictable was the hitting barrage. The Bishops delivered 11 home runs and hit .312
in winning the series. But the losing Hornets launched 13 homers. 5 different players had
more than one for them. Of the many players deserving of honor for key hits and pitching
performances—Bill Henry, with his 0.00 era 1-0 record and save, Monbouquette for his 3-hit
shutout, Gary Geiger for his series-leading 6 rbis (Crandall had 8 for the Hornets), Ted
Williams was true to form, batting .417, getting on base in more than half his plate appearances,
drilling 3 home runs, scoring 4 and knocking in 5. So, Teddy Ballgame gets MVP honors.
What is especially remarkable was Teddy’s being true to form occurred in a season in which
he was held under .300 for the first time in his career, in which he hit only 15 home runs
in the SPB. His performance was truly extraordinary. He also appeared in only 4 of the games.
Congratulations to Rick Ryan for a fabulous season and a world series in which his own team’s
heroics came up just barely short.
