SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 1 - Bob Gibson VS Bill Hands @ Hot Rods Stadium - Route 66 Stadium - The 1968 World Series kicked off with all of the festivities you would imagine. The skies were clear, the walls were draped with red, white and blue bunting, the beer, hot dogs and peanuts were flowing and the former Hot Rod favorite little Albie Pearson through out the 1st pitch. The red, white and blue busting was offset on the outside of Hot Rods field by Vietnam War protesters, but they did not darken the enthusiasm of Hot Rods fans inside the stadium, to them, they were at the center of the universe and not a half world away. They grooved to the tunes of the #1 song of the week, the Beatles new hit Hey Jude, while the world was on pins and needles as they waiting next weeks launch of Apollo 7, the first launch since the horrible disaster of Apollo 1 the year prior. On the field, the great Voyageurs hurler Bob Gibson would face off against the Hot Rods unlikely ace Bill Hands. It would be a tall order for Bill. You could feel the urgency of Hot Rods manager in the very 1st inning. After 2b Rod Carew reached on an IF single to lead of the game, he stole second, then advanced to 3rd on a flyout with 2 outs. Knowing a run could be the difference of the game, Rod Carew attempted a steal of home. He was tagged out on a close play and no damage was done. "We needed to generate a run against Gibson," said Manager Mike See, "I felt with 2 out that was the best chance we had against a guy like Bob Gibson." The scoring got started in the 2nd Inning, when Tippacanoe's Willie "Stretch" McCovey launched a moonshot to give the Voyageurs an early 1-0 lead. Then, the following inning, Bill began to lose his hands. After two of the 1st two batters reached, he walked McCovey to load the bases. Brooks Robinson they hit a Sac Fly to put the Voyageurs up 2-0. Little Tommy Helms followed with a base hit, which scored another run, giving Gibson a 3-0 lead, which to the Hot Rods felt like 10-0. While Gibson was hurling goose eggs, the Voyageurs added 2 more runs off of Hands in the 5th, on RBI's singles by Ken "Hawk" Harrelson Tommy Helms. Which sent Hands to the shows to wash his hands. The score was now 5-0, and it might as well have been 20-0 with the way Gibson was throwing. Bob Gibson went into cruise control from there, tossing a Complete Game 6 hit shutout, and silencing the raucous fans at Hot Rods Stadium. "We needed this game 1 here at Route 66," said Manager Steve Ehresman, "Now Home Field Advantage is even, and we have a chance to be in great shape when we head back home." SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 2 - Juan Marichal VS Jim Nash @ Hot Rods Stadium - Route 66 Stadium - As the game kicked off to a chilly 48 degrees at Hot Hods Stadium, original Hot Rod Luis Aparicio was on hand to toss out the 1st pitch. The country stood just one month to the day away from a highly contested presidential election and just 4 months to the day of the horrible assassination of Bobby Kennedy and 6 months and 1 day to the day pf Martin Luther Kings assassination. It had been a rough year, country was locked in racial, political conflicts and war raged. The world needed SPB Baseball to give them relief. And Jim Nash needed to provide the same relief to his teammates, otherwise, to quote the great Steppenwolf, they might be taking a "Magic Carpet Ride" to a World Series Sweep. With the Hot Rods down 1-0 in the series, your starter Jim Nash was feeling anxious before Game 2. If facing the "Dominican Dandy" Juan Marichal was not enough, Nash bad battled his own demons all season, marked by inconsistency. Many said it was the Sports Illustrated Jinx, which featured the youngster on their cover prior to the season. Greatness was expects, but he had fallen short of his own expectations of wanting to be a 20 game winner. He could make up for it all in this one game, trying to save his teammates from going down 2-0 before going on the road for 3. Both he, and Marichal, proved ready for the task. Both Nash and Marichal put zero's up on the board for the 1st four innings of the game. In the top of the 5th, Nash continued his mastery, with a 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the 5th, Marichal drilled Hot Rods Catcher Bill Freehan to lead off the inning, but Juan settled down to get the next two hitters on groundouts. Up to the plate stepped unlikely hero 3B Ken McMullen. On Marichal's second pitch, Ken crushed a 2-Run Home Run to give the Hot Rods and Nash a 2-0 lead. You could just feel the tension let out of Hot Rods stadium after starting the series with 13 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. "I was just trying to make contact," McMullen said after the game, "I never though I could groove one like that off of Marichal. He's a hell of a pitcher!" It would prove the be the only scoring of the game. Nash continued his dominance before giving off a lead off double to Brooks Robinson is the 9th inning. Hot Rods closer Eddie Watt relieved him and proceeded to turn the lights out on the rally, giving him the save and Jim Nash and the Hot Rods a much needed win. SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 3 Forecast: Clear skies, with an 18-mph wind blowing in from left With the series tied at one win apiece, the Tippecanoe Voyageurs handed the ball to Dean Chance, who compiled an impressive 23-8 record with a dazzling 1.70 ERA during the regular 1968 season. For their part, the visiting Hot Rods wasted no time running over Dean, giving him and his Voyageur teammates no chance at all. Inauspiciously, the game began with Rod Carew, reaching first on an error by shortstop Marty Martinez. Pete Rose singled Carew to third, and Reggie Jackson followed with a single down the right field line, scoring Carew and sending Rose to third. After Freehan walked to load the bases, Boog Powell lined another single to shallow left, scoring both Rose and Jackson. Freehan and Powell ended up on third and second, respectively, as Voyageur left fielder Bob Allison made an error on his throw to the plate, trying to cut down Jackson. Johnny Callison followed with an infield single to drive in Freehan and send Powell to third. Ken McMullen promptly hit a sacrifice fly to send Powell home. Finally, Tippecanoe had on out. Rico Petrocelli was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Jim “Catfish” Hunter flew out to left for the second out. Along came Rod Carew for his second at bat of the inning. He walked to load the bases, before Pete Rose flew out to left, mercifully ending the inning. Tippecanoe feebly answered with a home run by Ken “Hawk” Harrelson in the bottom of the first, but with the Catfish Hunter cruising along, it was all downhill for the Voyageurs. The visiting Hot Rods were far from finished with their beat-down, however, as Jackson answered Harrelson with a homer of his own in the second, while Carew drove in Rico Petrocelli with a single in the third. Before Chance could catch his breath, he and Tippecanoe were down 7-1 after only three innings. Said Voyageur manager Steve Ehresman, “Dean did not have his best stuff today, and the Hot Rods took advantage. We know they can put up runs fast.” Said Hot Rod manager Mike See, “After two tight games at our place, we were ready for our bats to come alive. Today, the guys were getting in their licks.” After two tallies in the top of the 6th, when Powell doubled in Freehand and scored on a Callison fielder’s choice, the Hot Rods put away the Voyageurs, with Paul Lindblad shutting the barn door for the Catfish. Final Score: Hot Rods 9 run, 12 hits, and no errors. SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 4 Trailing the powerful Hot Rods 2 games to 1, the Voyageurs turned to Jose Santiago, who had been a reliable fourth starter all season for Tippecanoe. With the temperature 55 degrees, the skies clear, and the wind negligible, Santiago delivered the first pitch in a must-have game for the Voyageurs at Metropolitan Stadium. Although both Rico Petrocelli and Reggie Jackson walked, Santiago wiggled out of the top of the first inning without his yielding a run. In the bottom of the inning, after Route 66’s starter Bill Hands walked Bob Allison and then refused to pitch to Willie McCovey, putting him on board with an intentional base on balls, Brooks Robinson made the Hot Rods pay, lining a single to left to plate Allison. The Voyageurs led 1-0 in a game they could not afford to lose. In the bottom of the fourth, the Voyageurs added to their lead, when Robinson launched a home run deep down the left field line. Tippecanoe’s hometown crowd was hopeful but wary. In the sixth inning, the indomitable Hot Rods struck. Pinch-hitter extraordinaire Gene Martin, batting for Bill Hands, led off the inning with a home run deep down the right filed line. Then, in the seventh inning, Boog Powell led off with a walk. Ken McMullen singled him to third, bringing pinch-hitter Rod Carew to the plate and sending Santiago to the showers. Young Wayne Granger entered the game in a real pickle. Although granger induced a double play, Powell scored to tie the game 2-2. The Voyageurs had averted disaster, but their manager, Steve Ehresman, was seen silently glowering in the hometown dugout. For the visitor, Mike See was clapping his hands and shouting encouragement. The tide of the game seemed to have turned against the Voyageurs. The Canoes would now be paddling up stream against the Hot Rods’ Diego Segui. Ehresman somewhat surprisingly allowed Wayne Granger to bat, and the rookie hurler responded with a single up the middle, just moments after the Voyageur crowd had sung “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Wasting no time, Voyageur manager Ehresman inserted Dave Boswell as a pinch-runner. Allison walked, with the fourth ball being a wild pitch that sent Boswell to third and Allison to second. Now the Rout 66 boys were in a pickle of their own making. Mickey Stanley followed with a single to drive in both Tippecanoe runners, extending the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Canoes. Then, Ken Harrelson was then hit by a pitch and McCovey walked to load the bases. Mike See trudged to the mound, walking slowly to give his reliever Bill Singer a few more warm-up tosses in the bullpen. When he was summoned, Singer yielded a sacrifice fly to Robinson, making the score 5-2. The hometown fans were shaking the stadium, but their Voyageurs still had six outs to record against the dangerous Hot Rods. To nail down the victory, Tippecanoe turned to bullpen ace Frank Linzy, who recorded a one, two, three eighth inning. Although Johnny Roseboro led off the bottom of the eighth with a double for Tippecanoe, the Voyageurs could not bring him home. The top of the ninth inning came with the Voyageurs still leading 5-2. Bill Freehan, the star catcher for the Hot Rods, but led off with a single to center, but Powell lined out, and Gary Holman, pinch-hitting for third sacker Ken McMullen, grounded into a double play to end the game. When the ball hit McCovey’s glove at first base, the Voyageurs poured out onto the field to celebrate a tense, hard-fought victory that knotted the Series at two games apiece. With Bob Gibson pitching the crucial fifth game, the Voyageurs held out hope to record a victory in their final game of the 1968 season at Metropolitan Stadium. “With Gibson, we feel good about our chances,” said Ehresman. “Tomorrow is another day. SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 5 On a 60-degree day with threatening skies, Bob Gibson took the mound for the Tippecanoe Voyageurs, trying to gain an edge over the Hot Rods and send the series back to Route 66’s park with three games to two advantage. Opposing Gibson was Jim Nash, who had combined with Eddie Watt in Game Two to throw a shut out at the Voyageurs and even the Series at one victory each. In the bottom of the third inning, the Voyageurs erupted for four runs. Mickey Stanley and Ken Harrelson led off with singles, putting runners on first and second with none out. Willie McCovey drove in Stanley with the third consecutive single of the inning, while Harrelson scampered to third. Brooks Robinson tripled in both Harrelson and McCovey and forced Mike See to change pitchers. Jim “Mudcat” Grant took the mound for Route 66, but Tommy Helms greeted him with a single, driving in Robinson. Grant managed to wiggle off the hook with no further damage. In the fourth inning, however, pesky Stanley singled to lead off the inning, while Harrelson doubled with Stanley stopping at third. McCovey drove in Stanley with a sacrifice fly, and the Canoes were in front comfortably, 5-0 after four complete frames. With Gibson breezing along, the Voyageurs struck again with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Bob Allison, had popped out to short, Stanley walked, and Harrelson doubled to right center field to drive him in. Harrelson moved to third on a McCovey fly out to center and scored on a Robinson single down the left field line. Tippecanoe led 7-0, going into the seventh inning. After Gibson struck out Bill Freehan, the skies opened for fifty-three long minutes. Long enough for Gibson’s arm to stiffen up and for Bobby Bolin to take the hill for Tippecanoe. Bolin got through the inning without his yielding a run. The bottom of the seventh inning was more of the same, Tippecanoe piling on and Route 66 going into damage control, anticipating Game Six. After one out, Johnny Roseboro and Bolin singled, putting men on first and second with only one out. Mike See went to his bullpen, and Sparky Lyle took the mound for the Hot Rods. Andy Kosco responded by doubling in Roseboro and sending Bolin to third. Bolin would score on a ground out to short by Stanley. Lyle threw two wild pitches, one sending Kosco to third and one allowing Kosco to score as Harrelson walked. The tally was now an insurmountable 10-0 in favor of the Voyageurs. Although it took Bolin, Tom Burgmeier, and Gene Brabender to put down an uprising by Route 66 in the top of the ninth (Paul Blair pinch-hit a double, driving in Freehan, and Frank Quilici pinch-hit a single, driving in Blair.), the Voyageurs had leaped ahead in the Series, overwhelming the Hot Rods 10-2 and taking an advantage of three games to two back to Yankee Stadium, home park of Rods. Said Steve Ehresman, “If Juan Marichal delivers as we know he can, we feel good about our chances. Rout 66 is dangerous, but we are rested and ready.” Said Mike See, “We like our chances at home. Tippecanoe has the advantage, but we will be sleeping in our own beds. Hey! SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 6 - Juan Marichal VS Jim "Catfish" Hunter @ Hot Rods Stadium - Route 66 Stadium - It was all on the line now. Make or break for the Hot Rods. After again being dominated and shellacked by Bob Gibson and the Voyageurs in game 5, the boys from Route 66 stood one game from elimination. It all would rest in the hands of Jim "Catfish" Hunter. "Hell no I ain't nervous," Catfish exclaimed before the game, "After tomorrow, hunting season starts in Hertford, so I just need to get out there an throw this best game I can to help us to get to tomorrow, then we'll see what happens. Either way, come Monday, I'll be out with my dogs and doin' some hunting!" His opponent was former Hot Rods pitcher Juan Marichal. Juan had pitched great in Game 2 (in fact, he had a no hitter going until Ken McMullen's 2 Run HR in the 5th ultimately gave the Hot Rods the win). He was determined to right the ship and give the Voyageurs their first WS win, one that he was denied the season he was with the Hot Rods in 1965. It did not work out the way the Dominican Dandy had planned it. The Hot Rods jumped all over Marichal in the 1st inning, all of the damage coming on a big 3-run HR by Route 66 star catcher Bill Freehan, which gave the Hot Rods an early 3-0 lead. "After getting shut out again by Gibson in game 5, we really needed that big hit by Bill," said manager Mike See, "I felt like our hitters were losing confidence, and felt much more comfortable after than happened." Meanwhile, Tippacanoe Manager Steve Erhresman had little patience with his starter, not wanting to see the game get our of hand, yanking him for a PH after 3 innings and turning the game over to the bull pen. "On this team, you either get it done, or you don't, and Juan didn't have it today." Said Manager Steve Ehresman, "When your down 3-0, we need runs, so I needed to PH and I have a tom of confidence in my bullpen." Wayne Granger came into the game in the 4th inning, but gave up several hits, resulting in another run when Johnny Callision scored on an RBI groundout by Rico Petrocelli. the score stood 4-0 Hod Rods after 4 innings. It was more that enough for Jim "Catfish" Hunter. Catfish stymied the Voyageur hitters, getting big strikeouts when he needed them, and escaping jams like he was Harry Houdini. The result was 7 inning of scoreless baseball, scattering 5 hits, 3 walks and striking out 4. "I thought I pitched a darn good game, Hunter said after the game, "It's a hell of a lot easier when your teammates are scoring runs for you!" After giving up a leadoff walk in the 7th, Catfish left to a standing ovation, and game 4 goat Diego Segui entered the game. Segui induced a 1-2-3 inning and handed the ball to closer Eddie Watt in the 9th. Watt mowed through the Voyageurs in the 9th, striking out 2, and the Hot Rods had tied the series, forcing an all or nothing Game 7 at Hot Rods Field tomorrow. Thank you Catfish : ) Tomorrow would see Bill Hands and a likely cast of 1000's versus scheduled starter Dean Chance? Would the Tippacanoe Manager take a chance on Chance, or would Game 5's unlikely rain delay allow Bob Gibson to come back on short rest to start game 7 or pitch in relief? SPB2-1968 WORLD SERIES GAME 7 - Dean Chance VS Bill Hands @ Hot Rods Stadium - Route 66 Stadium - It all came down to one game. An all or nothing Game 7 for the World Championship. As it should be. The Route 66 Hot Rods would send starter Bill Hands to the mound for a 3rd time, which the Voyagers sent 23 game winner Dean Chance to the mound on regular rest. There was a lot of thought before the game the manager Steve Ehresman would send Bob Gibson out on just 2 days rest, but he quickly squelched that. "Bob might be available today, but he's not going to start. We are going to stick to what we have planned all series, and not take a chance on a pitcher on short rest not having his best stuff." Meanwhile, Bill Hands, was nervous. He had not pitched well in game 1, and while he pitched better in game 5, the Hot Rods had lost both games. This was his chance at redemption. But his nervous-nous showed in the 1st inning, in fact, to the first batter. Bob Allison led off the game with a long triple, and Mickey Stanley followed him with a single to give the Voyageurs and immediate 1-0 lead. See could tell something was off with his starter and visited the mound "I just told him to relax," said See, "I told him to pitch like he was capable, and don't worry about that run, that his teammates would pick him up." It seemed to help, as Hands got out of the inning. See proved to be right about picking Hands up in the bottom of the 1st. Pete Rose reached on SS Marty Martinez's error, and reached 3rd on a Reggie Jackson single. Rose then scored on a Sac Fly by Freehan to knot the game at 1-1. Hands had his run back. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 3rd, and this time, it was Hands who would help himself. After a Petrocelli groundout, Hands reached base on yet another error by SS Marty Martinez, his second error in just 3 innings. Chance then uncorked a wild pitch, moving Hands to 2nd. After Rod Carew grounded out, Pete Rose laced a double off chance, scoring another unearned run the the Hot Rods and putting them up 2-1. Both pitchers tossed clean 4th innings, but in the top of the 5th, the Voyageurs struck back with small ball. Tito Francona pinch hit for catcher Mike Ryan and walked. Then, Dave Boswell, a much better bunter than Chance, pinch hit for Chance and advanced Francona to second. Tom Burgmeier pinch ran and was advanced to second on a ground out by Allison. Then once again, Mickey Stanley, who did it all in the series with bat and glove, came through, hustling out an IF single, which scored Burgmeier and tied the game at 2-2. With Chance gone, Ehresman made some changes, moving the error prone Martinez to catcher and Gary Sutherland to SS. Into the game came Wally Bunker. Wally was greeted by a leadoff double from Game 2 hero Ken McMullen. Rico Petrocelli sacrificed McMullen to third. See then pinch hit for Hands with Gary Holman. Bunker induced a popout and was nearly out of the inning, but young Rod Carew had other ideas, stepping to the plate and smacking a single, scoring McMullen and giving the Hot Rods the lead back 3-2 heading into the 6th. Manager Mike See now had a decision. Who does he give the ball to? He had lost confidence in Segui after the game 4 meltdown. So he started the inning with a LH (Paul Lindblad) to face McCovey. Lindblad repaid him by giving up one of the few hits McCovey had in the series, and Lindblad immediately exited. Then, to almost everyone's surprise, See trotted his closer Eddie Watt out to start the 6th inning. "I told Eddie before the game to be ready, that I might go to him early if it was a critical situation, and it does not get any more critical than a 1 run lead with no outs in the 6th inning of a Game 7!" said See after then came. Watt got Brooks Robinson, but them gave up a single to 2B Tommy Helms, putting the potential tying run at second. After a visit from Freehan, Watt bared down, and got the next two batters to escape the jam. Meanwhile, the Tippacanoe Bullpen was doing its job, shutting the Hot Rods down the the 7th and 8th, but Watt followed suit, complete slamming the door on then as well in the 7th and 8th innings. It came to the top of the 9th. The last chance for the Voyageurs. See decided to stick with Watt to close out the game. First Eddie would face Tommy Helms. Helms popped out. Next, Watt faced Marty Martinez, who was looking for a chance to redeem himself after his TWO CRITICAL ERRORS. Watt got Martinez on a ground out to Big Boog Powell. Down to their last out, the Voyageurs send Gary Sutherland to the plate. Watt had thrown 47 pitches, but See stuck with him. Sutherland smashed a double, to put the potential tying run on second. It was obvious Eddie was gassed, but he had done his job. See now had no choice but to turn the game over to game 4 goat Diego Segui. And a chance for redemption. Segui would face OF Andy Kosco. Diego threw a first pitch strike, and then a ball. He moved the count to 1-2. Down to their last strike. With all of the effort he could muster, Segui uncorked the finest curve he had thrown in is life, and in slow-motion, Kosco sung his hardest, trying to get that runner at second home, but he swung right through it. The ball landed in Freehan's glove and it was all over! The Hot Rods had won their first World Series since 1961 and Freehan leaped into a vindicated Segui's arms. Redemption indeed, at least for Segui. The agony of defeat for poor Marty Martinez, who will be left to wonder what might have been The Route 66 Hot Rods were the 1968 SPB-2 World Champions. Notes......What a series the was! Congrats of course the Steve Ehresman on a great series and season. It was hard fought and played H2H. Could have gone either way. MVP - Their are Co-MVP's on the 1968 World Series. The first is Jim "Catfish" Hunter, who came up huge twice for the Hot Rods, winning 2 games, including the critical Game 6, with a microscopic 0.64 ERA. The other MVP is 3B Ken McMullen. Ken batted .333 for the series, but his HR in Game 2 won the game for the Hot Rods (and really saved the series), and his double in Game 7 led to him scoring the winning run of the series for Route 66. Honorable Mentions - Had the Voyageurs pulled off game 7, no doubt we'd be talking about Bob Gibson as a co-mvp's (2-0, struck out 9 and didn't give up a run in either of his starts) with Mickey Stanley, who batted .478 in the series and had like 4 "spectacular catches in CF, likely robbing HR's and extra base hits. Rod Carew led all hitters with a .480 average and knocked in the game winning RBI in game 7. That's a wrap on 1968!
