SPB2-1971 A.L. Division Series #1 GAME 1
The Route 66 Hot Rods went into the playoffs as heavy favorites, having won a record 120 regular
season games and finished the AL West race with a whopping 21 game lead. They were opposed in the
first round by the Evanston Elephants who modestly overachieved and won 96 games, falling short in
the AL East by one game but did gain the second wild card slot.
The series opened at Hot Rods Veterans Stadium on October 3rd where the weather was a pleasant 70
degrees. The sensational Vada Blue with a 25-4 regular season record was opposed by Don Gullett
whose regular season mark was an undistinguished 12-14. Interestingly two of Blues four losses
came at the hands of the Elephants which turned out to be a harbinger of things to come. Blue was
magnificent until the seventh inning and had a 2-0 lead when after a walk to Brooks Robinson and a
single by Boog Powell, pinch hitter Carlton Fisk boomed a three run homer deep to center and Gullett
hung on to post a 3-2 victory and put the Pachyderms up 1-0

Game Two was also at Veterans Stadium where the sky was clear, but the temperature dropped to
56 degrees. Fan favorite Catfish Hunter with a 23-9 regular season record was opposed by Tom
Bradley who went 19-11 for Evanston. Bradley pitched well for six innings, but Hunter was
sensational, taking a no-hitter int the seventh and had a 1-0 lead courtesy of a George Scott
homer. In the bottom of the frame Horace Clarke led off with a walk and Dave May broke up the
no-no with a solid single. Bill Freehan’s ground out moved both baserunners and then Boog Powell
doubled them home to give Evanston a 2-1 lead. Relievers Fred Norman and Fred Gladding held off
Route 66 the final two innings to give Evanston a shocking two game lead. The winner pitcher
was Horacio Pina with the loss going to the hard luck Hunter.

Game Three moved to Municipal Stadium the home park of the Elephants. The sky was cloudy
with a 56- degree temperature. Jim Palmer, 18-9 in the regular season was opposed by Al Downing,
who posted a 17-11 regular season mark. Downing pitched seven good innings and was up 2-1. In
the top of the eighth Elephant manager John Ungashick over managed and lifted Al for a pinch hitter
but the team was unable to score and he brought in the Game Two winner, Pina to start the inning
but PH Rusty Torres doubled and then Campy Campaneris singled him home to tie the score at 2-2.
Mike See then brought up Mr. October, Reggie Jackson to pinch hit against the righty Pina but
Ungashick countered with lefty Don Shaw and See then lifter Reggie for George Scott who promptly
struck out. Campy made it to second base on a singe by Harmon Killebrew but Shaw shut the door
and we went to the 9th tied at 2-2. In the top of the 9th Munson had a one out single and went
to second on a ground out. Mike See brought in his ace PH Rusty Torres but Shaw intentionally
walked him and Campy hit into a force out to send the game into extra innings. Jerry Walker, a
good 16-7 as a starter in the regular season came in to pitch the10th but was shelled for two runs
and the ‘Rods were up 4-2 going into the bottom of the 10th. Tug McGraw came in to pitch and
Freehan homered with one out to make it 4-3. Boog Powell doubled and then Brooks Robinson singled,
but the third base coach stopped the slow-footed Powell at third. However, McGraw bore down and
struck out Jerry Stahl and Derek Jeter ended the game with a fly out. Reliever Ron Kline got the
win with McGraw awarded a save and the loss went to Walker.

SPB2-1971 A.L. Division Series #1 GAME 4
Game Four was also at Municipal Stadium and pitted Blue, the loser of Game One against Nelson Briles.
14-3 as a regular season swing man. Both pitchers were tough through seven innings with the score
tied at 1-1. Blue was lifted for an eight inning pinch hitter but Route 66 was unable to score and
then in the bottom of the 8th, reliever Kline gave up a pinch hit single to Fisk and then Ungashick
brought in Jerry May to hit but See countered with lefty reliever John Cumberland. Since May is very
poor against lefties, Ungashick then lifted him for Derek Jeter who flied out and then Maury wills
popped out before Freehan singled to left, sending Fisk to third. Up came Hal McRae who crushed a homer
to center and the Elephants had a 4-1 lead. In came erstwhile ace closer Fred Gladding to try and nail
down the win and give Evanston a 3-1 series lead. However, after two straight singles, Belting Bill
Melton tied it up 4-4 with his own three-run homer. Evanston was unable to score in the bottom of the
9th and we went into extra innings once more. In the top of the 10th the Hot Rods threatened but once
again Rusty Torres was intentionally walked and it paid off. Pete Richer had been pitching very well
for the team and kept the ‘Rods off the score board for 3 1/3 innings but he was tiring by the bottom
of the 13th and was pinch hit for to no avail. Ungashick once again brought in Walker as he seemed the
best alternative, but he was shelled for five runs with Murcer’s two run homer the big blow.
Evanston scored once in the bottom of the 14th but it wasn’t enough, and the Hot Rods had a 9-5 win
and a 2-2 series tie. The winning pitcher was Ray Newman with Walker tagged for his second loss.

At this point, the Evanston bullpen was a shambles and Game One starter Don Gullett got the nod to
stem the tide against Hunter, the hard luck loser of Game Two. Hunter had thrown 143 pitches just
three days before, but he tried to gut it out. Light hitting Maury Wills socked a two-run homer in
the second inning to give Evanston a lead and they were up 4-1 heading into the 9th. Gullett was
giving it his all but after a two-out double by Murcer, he was at 134 pitches and Ungashick lifted
him for Don Shaw who was also on the verge of fatigue but he reached back for that little extra and
got Rod Carew on a ground out to give Evanston a 4-1 win and a 3-2 series lead. Gullett won his
second game of the series and Hunter was tagged with his second loss.

SPB2-1971 A.L. Division Series #1 GAME 6
The series moved back to Hot Rod territory for Game Six with Bradley facing Palmer. The sky was
clear with a 70-degree temperature. Evanston rocked Palmer for six runs in less than four innings
and had a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth but Route 66 exploded for five runs with
Melton hitting a three-run homer and Munson a two-run shot. Evanston counted with two runs in the
top of the fifth to go up 9-5. The Rods scored a single run in the bottom of the 7th and it was
9-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. Facing elimination, they rallied with homers by Murcer
and Jackson, but Pina was able to shut the door and give the visitors a 9-8 win and sending them
to round two. Bradley got the win and Palmer the loss.
Bill Freehan hit .385 with a homer and five RBI’s for the winners while Boog Powell was at .333
with three homers and seven RBI’s but the big hero was Don Gullett with two wins including a gutsy
Game Five. Bobby Murcer was a terror for the losers as he hit .423 with 11 hits, two homers and
four RBI’s, but the team lacked clutch hits at the right time. A great series!
