SPB2-1974 A.L. Division Series #1 GAME 1
In a rematch of the 1973 AL Wild Card series, the Los Angeles Angels faced the South River Gladiators in Head-to-head
play using Hamachi. Both teams finished at the top of the AL in team ERA, WHIP and OPS, so this projected to be a
-scoring series.
Game 1 San Diego Stadium; Bert Blyleven (GLA) vs Jim Perry (LAA)
Bert Blyleven (20-9, 2.27 ERA) and Jim Perry (19-9, 2.67 ERA) squared off in the opening game.
Both teams traded single runs in the first. The Gladiators then broke out with a 5-run 4th inning, scoring all runs
after two were out. The Gladiators scored a couple of insurance runs in the 7th. Blyleven scattered 8 hits and 3 walks
in 8 innings, striking out 8. John Hiller tossed a scoreless 9th for the 8-1 win.

Game 2 San Diego Stadium; Luis Tiant (GLA) vs Rick Reuschel (LAA)
Luis Tiant (22-13, 3.01 ERA) faced Rick Reuschel (11-14, 3.17 ERA). Both starters tossed scoreless frames through
6 ½ innings. Johnny Bench led off the bottom of the 7th with a homerun to put the Gladiators ahead 1-0. The Angels
quickly tied the game on Tiant’s throwing error. The Gladiators scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the
8th with an assist from the umpires. Dan Driessen singled, and advanced to second on Buddy Harrelson’s bunt. Reuschel
balked sending Driessen to third. Joe Torre then hit a sac fly to right. The next batter flew out. Tom House pitched
a scoreless 9th for the save. The Gladiators held a 2-0 lead, heading into Anaheim Stadium.

Bert Blyleven and Jim Perry in a rematch of game 1. The Gladiators started the scoring in the 3rd, taking
a 2-0 lead. Ken Singleton led off the 5th with a home run, but Blyleven seemed to be in cruise control.
Both teams traded runs in the 6th. The Angels then tied the game with a single run in the 7th, their offense
finally showing some life. The Angels knocked Blyleven out of the game with two straight singles in the 8th.
Another two consecutive singles off closer Tom House gave the Angels a 5-3 lead. They added a final run for a
6-3 lead. Doug Bird then notched his third save on a scoreless 9th. The Angels now had a 3-2 lead heading
back into San Diego.

Rick Reuschel, the Game 2 “balker,” threw FOUR wild pitches in Game 6 (Harry Doyle’ call: “Just a LITTLE BIT outside.”) Did you know that Reuschel
NEVER threw a wild pitch in his entire MLB career? Well, neither did I, because that isn’t true, but he did only allow 1 WP every 40 IP over 19 years.
Big Daddy will be working on this during the offseason.
Nonetheless the Angels had another great season, and I have no complaints. This was their third straight playoff appearance, including an improbable
championship in 1972, and—I’m sure this is not unusual among SPB managers—I have developed a deep affection for the players on this team. Not a Hall
of Famer in the bunch, but a group of good, solid players.
Also, Joe and I go way back and have had some classic series—most notably the 1970 World Series that featured Bob Gibson’s Game 7 perfect game—probably
the greatest single-game performance in SPB history. This was not exactly a classic series, but it sure was fun.
