SPB2-1977 ALCS GAME 1
Game 1
The Surf led 2-1 after six innings, with both Ron Guidry and Ed Halicki pitching brilliantly.
Despite the strong outings, both managers went to the bullpen. “The Scarecrow” handled the 7th
and 8th innings for the Surf, and Bruce Sutter shut the door in the 9th to preserve the 2-1
Surf victory.

SPB2-1977 ALCS GAME 2
Game 2
The game was tied 1-1 after six innings as Ed Figueroa and Steve Rogers were both dealing.
This time, we decided to stick with Rogers, but it backfired immediately when Jim Rice
launched a solo home run to put the Mets ahead 2-1.
The Surf answered right back with a two-run homer from Jason Thompson to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
The Mets tied it again in the 8th when Mike Schmidt delivered an RBI triple. The Surf couldn’t
answer in the bottom half, sending the game to the 9th tied at 3-3.
The Surf turned to former ace Catfish Hunter to start the 9th, but Jim Rice greeted him with
his second home run of the game, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead.
Bill Atkinson came on to relieve Rogers in the bottom of the 9th. He immediately struck out Mr.
October, but then allowed a single to George Hendrick and walked Jason Thompson. Larry Parrish
stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two-run double, scoring both Hendrick and Thompson
to give the Surf a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory and a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3
Another good pitching matchup. Surf touched Koosman for an unearned run in the top of
the 2nd as Fisk led off and reached on a Rob Andrews error. After a force at 2B Reggie
was now the baserunner. Parrish flew out, however Hendrick and Thomas with back-to-back
singles scored Jackson. Jim Rice tied the game at 1-1 immediately with a leadoff homer
in the bottom of the 2nd. Garvey then smacked a double and scored two batters later on a Andrews single.
The teams next exchanged 6th inning runs. Bailor singled home Parrish who led off the inning with a
single and reached 3rd on a pair of ground outs. The Mets had a repeat of the 2nd inning as this time
it was Mike Schmidt who led off with a homer to take a 3-2 lead. The Surf then tied the score at 3-3
in the top of the 7th with another unearned run as leadoff batter Dawson reached 2B on an error by SS Royster.
Fisk singled him home.
We go to the bottom of the 9th where Fred Lynn draws a one out walk and pinch hitter Omar Moreno draws
another Met walk. After Veryzer flies out Ben Oglivie delivers a walk-off RBI single.
Koosman was burned with a couple of unearned runs, however the bullpen held up this time as Andujar and
game 2 losing pitcher Atkinson tossed 1-2-3 innings in the 8th and 9th. Atkinson earns the win.

Surf touched Barrios for three in the 1st as Hernandez drew a leadoff walk and stole 2B.
Bailor singled him home and Parker hit a 2-run homer. Not to be outdone, the Mets got all
three back in the bottom of the 1st on a Jim Rice 2-out home run, scoring Wayne Gross and
Cliff Johnson who both walked.
However, in the top of the 4th Jason Thompson picks up what turns out to be the GWRBI 2-run homer.
Teams exchange 8th inning runs and the Surf take a 3-1 series lead. Ken Forsch tossed 8 innings of 3-hit ball.
And Sutter earned a save striking out the side in the 9th. Interestingly, Met pitchers only allowed 5 hits.

This one was over quickly when the Mets entered the 2nd inning with a 2-1 lead and the Surf
touched Guidry and reliever Johnson for 8 runs.
Final score ended up being 11-7 as the Surf took the series 4-1.
Congratulations to the Surf on advancing to the '77 World Series. Thank you to Mike for
