SPB2-1977 A.L. Division Series GAME 1
It looks pretty bleak for the Evanston Elephants as they lost both games at home to the New York Mets.
The scene shifts to New York where the Pachyderms need to win at least two games to send the series
back to Evanston.
In Game One Evanston's Wayne Garland (18-9 in the regular season) faced off against lefty Ron Guidry
(13-8 in the regular season). Even though Guidry had a stellar 2.56 ERA in the regular season the
Elephants manager John Ungashick was very hopeful as the Evanston crew had done very well against
LHP all year. However it wasn't to be today as the Mets scored first as Fred Lynn hit a two-out
double and then Rob Andrews singled him home. It stayed that way until the sixth when the Mets
scored three runs with Jerry Royster's two-run single the big hit. The Elephants got their first run
in the bottom of the frame as Hal McRae hit a sac fly to score Rod Carew. In thee bottom of the
eighth McRae had a two run double to make it 4-3 but then was thrown out at home trying to score
on a single by Dan Ford. In retrospect what looks like a poor move Ungashick lifted Garland (who
had a lousy 4.73 ERA in the regular season) and put in Dick Tidrow rather than ace Rollie Fingers.
Tidrow quickly gave up three runs and Guidry pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to give the
Mets a 7-3 win.

SPB2-1977 A.L. Division Series GAME 2
Game Two featured Don Gullett (12-5 in the regular season) against Steve Rogers (16-12). The Mets
got a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Omar Moreno. Evanston tied it on a one-out single in
the eighth by Jack Kemp. The Elephants had men at first and third but pinch hitter Dave Skaggs flied
out and Campy Campaneris struck out to end the threat. Ungashick brought in ace relieve Rollie Fingers
to pitch in the ninth and he retired the Mets in order. Ron Carew had a two-out double in the bottom of
the inning but Evanston was a unable to score. Things were scoreless through the next two extra innings
and Rogers soldiered on into the eleventh and was finally lifted for Bill Atkinson after 151 pitches.
In the top of the twelfth Jim Rice hit a lead off homer to put New York ahead 2-1. Evanston went down in
order in the bottom of the frame and New York took a 2-0 lead in the series. In addition to losing both
games at home the Elephants ace Rollie Fingers had 56 pitches in the loss which made him questionable for
the games in New York.
Things are not looking good for Evanston!

Mets take and early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd Fred Lynn leads off with a homer and four
batters later Wayne Gross plated Jerry Royster on a groundout and Mike Schidt followed with a
RBI single. The Mets made it 7-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Two of the runs were unearned.
Fred Lynn delivered another clutch hit with a 2-run double. Elephants made it 7-2 in the top
of the 6th as Dan Ford delivered a 2-run triple. Elephants made it close in the top of the
9th, scoring a couple of unearned runs and loading the bases Bill Atkinson came in to record
the final 2 outs. Mets win 7-4 and take a 3-0 series lead behind Koosman.

Mets jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on a 2-run single by Jim Rice followed by a RBI
double by Steve Garvey. Elephants tied it up at 3-3 with 2-run home run by Leroy Stanton in the top of the
3rd and RBI single by Stanton in the 5th. Mets were not phased as Mike Schmidt singled home a run in the
bottom of the 7th and Jim Rice singled him home. Fred Lynn added an insurance run with a solo shot. Barrios
tossed 8 strong innings and Bill Atkinson earned another save.
