SPB2-1977 Wild Card Series GAME 1
Game 1: Gladiators Tom Seaver (22-9, 3.43 ERA) at Mets Ron Guidry (13-8, 2.56 ERA)
Two aces started out strong. The game was 1-1 until Steve Garvey led off the 5th with a
double off of Seaver and Fred Lynn walked. Seaver almost got out of the jam until Ben
Oglivie smacked a 2-out, 3-run home run that turned out to be the game-winner. Guidry was
brilliant, going the distance allowing only 3 hits while striking out 10.
Mets take a 1-0 series lead with a 4-1 win.

Another great pitching matchup between two more of the best pitchers from the era.
The score was tied after 9 and went into extra innings where Sixto Lezcano hit a 2-out
solo home run in the top of the 11th.
Blyleven got the win having tossed 10 innings of 5-hit, 0-BB, 7-k ball. Rogers went 9
innings and didn’t factor into the decision.
Series tied at 1-1 as the Gladiators win 3-2 in 11 innings.

One of the strangest games I have ever been a part of. The Mets scored 5 in the 1st ,
including 4 on a Fred Lynn grand slam and jumped out to a 8-0 lead heading into the bottom
of the 5th when the Gladiators scored 5, including 4 on a Johnny Bench grand slam. In the
bottom of the 7th the wheels fell completely off when South River scored 6 more runs, 4 on a
Dan Driessen grand slam.
Series tied at 2-2 as the Gladiators win 11-9.

Once again Kooz rose to the occasion with a 6-hit complete game. Fred Lynn with a homer and 2 RBI.
Mets win 4-1.
Crazy series that could have gone either way. The difference was Mets two lefty SP’s Koosman and
Guidry who each won 2 games and shared MVP honors.
