Winter Harbor Seals vs. Montreal Royals
SPB2-1977 NLCS GAME 1
Coming off a franchise-record 114 wins, the Winter Harbor Seals battled the defending champion Montreal
Royals H2H for the National League title.
October 20th. Winter Harbor sent 20-game winner Dave Goltz to the hill in the opener, squaring off against
Royals' ace, Jim Palmer. The Seals struck quickly on Oscar Gamble's leadoff homer in the bottom of the 1st,
and Bob Watson's added an RBI single later in the frame to take a 2-0 lead. Montreal loaded the bases in the
3rd, but Goltz got George Brett to fly to center to wriggle out of trouble. But in the 4th, Tony Solaita
cut the lead in half with a solo shot, then tied the game with a single that scored Brett in the top of
the 6th.
Palmer had settled down nicely after the opening frame, retiring fifteen of the next eighteen, and in the
top of the 7th, Montreal pulled ahead, 3-2, on a Brett fielder's choice. But the lanky right-hander faltered
again in the home 7th, allowing a pair of base-runners and giving way to southpaw Dave LaRoche who came in to
squelch the threat. LaRoche struck out Reggie Smith to open the home 8th. Carl Yastrzemski then managed to
bounce a single up the middle, bringing Ted Simmons to the plate. Acquired from Seattle in the off-season,
Simba had quickly became a fan favorite, and now he brought the crowd to its feet, depositing a LaRoche
fastball into the right-field bleachers. Steve Foucault set the Royals down in order to officially snatch

October 21st. Game 2 pitted the Seals' J.R. Richard against Montreal's Burt Hooton. Winter Harbor
wasted no time as a Gamble single followed by a two-run shot by Smith ignited a four-run 1st. The
Royals cut the lead in half in the 4th, but Gamble and Yaz went deep in the home half, Richie Hebner

October 23rd. Play shifted southwest across the border, as Montreal looked to change its fortunes
behind knuckler Joe Niekro. And George Brett, who put the Royals up with a three-run homer off Dennis
Leonard in the 1st, and added a solo shot in the 5th as Montreal took a 6-3 lead. Manny Trillo tripled
home a run and scored on a Gamble single to cut the advantage to 6-5 in the 6th. Simmons opened the 7th
with a double off Skip Lockwood, Bob Watson walked, and the Royals brought LaRoche in to face Hebner.
The Seals countered with a pinch-hitter, Jim Fregosi.
Like Yaz, Fregosi has been a fixture in Winter Harbor since its inaugural 1961 season. Hampered by
nagging injuries, the 35-year-old had been limited to just fifty plate appearances, but was healthy
enough to win the last spot on the playoff roster. Four of his seventeen hits in the regular season had
won games, and now he notched another when he drove a hanger from the hapless LaRoche over the left field
wall to put Winter Harbor up, 8-6. Smith's second homer of the series leading off the the 8th made it 9-6.
Brett's two-run bomb off Foucault in the 9th got Montreal close but not enough.

October 24th. Facing elimination, the Royals sent young John Urrea to the mound to face veteran
Tommy John in Game 4. After spotting the Seals two early runs, Montreal rebounded to take a 3-2
lead on yet another Brett bomb, and stretched their advantage to 7-2 after six.. Simmons led off
the top of the 6th with his second round tripper of the series, then capped a four-run rally in
the 7th with a three-run shot, to knot it up, 7-7. In the home half of the 7th, base hits by
Solaita and Larry Cox put runners on first and third, and Brett followed with a sacrifice fly that
put Montreal up for good. Ron Jackson's pinch-hit two-run double off Joe Sambito in the 8th iced
the win as the Royals avoided the sweep.

SPB2-1977 NLCS GAME 5
October 25th. Mike Flanagan looked to keep Montreal's hopes alive as he took the mound to
face Goltz in Game 5. As they had in the previous four games, Winter Harbor jumped on top
in the 1st, thanks to RBIs by Watson and Smith. But Goltz proved to be little mystery this
time around. Bake McBride's three-run homer in the 4th put the Royals up, 3-2. RBIs by the
ever-pesky Solaita and Ron Fairly in the 5th pushed the lead to three, and Jackson came off
the bench again to apply the dagger with a with a two-run dinger in the 8th. Flanagan locked
down Seal bats after the 1st, and needed just 72 pitches in his eight inning stint.

SPB2-1977 NLCS GAME 6
October 27th. With a little unease here and there in the Memorial crowd, the Seals looked to
close the series behind JR against Palmer. They picked up single runs in the 1st and 2nd, with
Palmer uncoiling a key wild pitch and Gene Tenace misfiring a pickoff throw. In the 3rd, they
knocked Palmer from the box with a single and two walks that brought Niekro out of the pen. The
knuckler didn't knuckle this day as Watson, Hebner, and Lemon doubled back-to-back-to-back. One
out later, Trillo doubled one more time to put Winter Harbor up, 8-0. Richard went a solid seven,
but was pulled as a precaution when his shoulder suddenly tightened, and the bullpen finished up
to punch the Seals' ticket to the World Series for the first time since 1967.
