Winter Harbor Seals vs. Carolina Surf
SPB2-1977 World Series GAME 1
The 1977 Fall Classic, pitting the Carolina Surf against the Winter Harbor Seals, was played under
difficult circumstances. Played so soon after the passing of Surf skipper, Greg Nolen, Mike and
I agreed to use the CM to run our teams, with Stan playing the games at league headquarters. These
summaries draw from Stan's game notes.
October 29th. Schoodic Park was packed for its first World Series since 1967. The partisans hadn't
all settled into their seats when Reggie Smith launched a shot beyond the right field wall, igniting a
three run 1st against Surf starter, Ed Halicki. The Seal's Dennis Leonard carried a 4-1 lead into the
8th, then faltered, as Carolina scored on a fielder's choice and squeeze to make it 4-3. Steve Foucault,
who had converted 38 of 41 save opportunities during the regular season, came in to close it out in the 9th.
But Keith Hernandez lashed a double to start, took third on a fly by Bobby Grich, and trotted home on
a Dave Parker single to tie it.
Winter Harbor failed to score in the home half, and the game pushed into the 12th. Into his fourth inning
of work, Foucault fanned Parker, but Carlton Fisk followed with a moonshot over the left field fence.
Carolina scored another pair, and the bullpen held the Seals at bay in their final at bat, to take the opener.

October 30th. The Seals sent Dave Goltz to the hill to face Ed Figueroa in Game 2. Hernandez wasted
no time depositing Goltz' first offering into the left-center seats, and Smith responded with another
blast in the bottom half. After that, the Surf pulled slowly away until erupting for six runs in the
top of the 6th on just four hits and costly errors by the usually sure-handed keystone combo of Rick
Burleson and Manny Trillo. Figueroa held the Seals to a single the rest of the way. Bob Bailor drove
in three, Parker and Reggie Jackson two each.

SPB2-1977 World Series GAME 3
November 1st. Up 2-0, Carolina looked to wrap it up in front of their own wild sea of fans as the
Series shifted south. Ken Forsch got the nod for the Surf, J.R. Richard for the Seals. For the third
straight game, Reggie Smith homered in the 1st. But there wasn't much else to cheer about for Winter
Harbor. The Surf tied it up, went ahead 2-1 on a Fisk homer in the 3rd, then added flour more in the
bottom of the 4th. Forsch went eight strong, and when Bruce Sutter set down the Seals in order in the
9th, Carolina was up 3-0 and the champagne was ready to be iced.

November 2nd. The Seals turned to veteran southpaw Tommy John to stay alive. in Game 4, while the Surf
brought Ed Halicki back for his second start. Winter Harbor got on the board right away again, with Oscar
Gamble and Smith setting the table for Carl Yastrzemski's sac fly and a Ted Simmons double to take a quick
2-0 lead. They were clinging to a 2-1 lead after six when the power switched on. Gamble hit a solo in the
7th, Simmons another in the 8th, and the Seals pulled away from there. John went the distance in his best
performance of the season.

November 3rd. Hoping to force the Series back home, Winter Harbor called on Leonard to take the mound again,
facing Lary Sorensen. A shaky Sorensen walked the first three batters he faced. A groundout by Simmons brought
in one, a sac fly by Bob Watson brought in a second, and Richie Hebner's two run homer put the Seals up 4-0.
Gamble poled a two-run shot of his own in the 4th, hammered a solo blast in the 6th for good measure, and Winter
Harbor went up 9-0 to shock the Carolina crowd into silence. The Surf scored late to make it closer, but Leonard
finished what he started, and the two teams headed back to the Maine coast.

November 5th. Back home, Winter Harbor looked to stave off elimination a third time, with Goltz returning to the
mound to face Ed Figueroa. Dominant in Game 2, Figueroa was no mystery this day, as Winter Harbor did what it did
best all year - mash. The Seals took a 1-0 lead after one, Reggie Smith hit a three run homer in the 2nd, Simmons
added a solo shot in the 3rd. Gamble's two-run blast and Watson's three-run blow put five more on the board in
the 4th and the Seals were up 10-1. Carlton Fisk knocked in four with a triple and his fifth HR of the Series, but
the Surf never seriously challenged.

SPB2-1977 World Series GAME 7
November 6th. The Seals had smashed their way out of an 0-3 hole to force Game 7, and now handed the ball to
young JR Richard as they tried to complete the most improbable of comebacks. Ed Halicki took the mound for a
third time for Carolina, and in the bottom of the 3rd, Gamble deposited a 1-1 hanger into the right field seats
(his 5th of the Series), Smith walked, and Simmons hammered his 4th to give Winter Harbor an early 3-0 lead.
After his shaky outing in Game 2, JR was sharp this day through seven, surrendering just a solo homer to Dave
Parker in the 6th to make the score 3-1.. But with Parker due up to open the 8th, southpaw Dave Tomlin was
brought in to face him. Tomlin promptly fanned him, bringing Carlton Fisk to the plate. And Steve Foucault
in from the pen.
Fisk had put together an MVP performance, hittinng .350 with 5 HRs and 12 RBI. Foucault, the best reliever
in the National League, had not. He'd blown the 9th inning lead in Game 1 to put Winter Harbor in an early hole.
Foucault got ahead 1-2, then induced Fisk to bounce a sinker to Hebner at 3rd.for the second out, as Reggie
Jackson walked out of the on-deck circle. After an MVP-worthy regular season, Jackson had been abysmal in the
post-season, hitting .111 in the ALCS, and under .200 in the Series, with no home runs. And in his final at
bat, his woes continued, as he grounded out to second. After a scoreless home 8th, Foucault struck out George
Hendrick, Jason Thompson, and Derrell Thomas to finish a magical run.

Wowza. Congrats to the Carolina Surf that Greg guided to two AL pennants, and that Mike has returned to guide
forward. Big thanks to Stan for coordinating and running the games, and keeping us up to date as the Series
progressed. Oscar Gamble (.375/.482/1.042, 5 HR) and Ted Simmons (.406/.424/.875, 4 HR) named co-MVP, with a
nod to Pudge. I see Red and Yankees everywhere . . .
