A.L.Champions Kansas City Blues vs. N.L.Champions Worcester Grays
SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
The 1940 World Series between the Kansas City Blues and the Worcester Grays featured a
match-up between clubs whose contrasts ran deeper than the colors of their uniforms. At
home in cavernous Griffith Stadium, the Blues won a hundred games despite hitting just
seventy-one home runs, fewest in the Junior Circuit. Relying instead on a lineup that
consistently sprayed league-leading quantities of doubles and triples through the pasture
gaps, and a solid pitching staff well-suited to the wide-open spaces, Kansas City charged
from behind in the September stretch run to overtake its more muscular rivals in River City
and Rock Island and capture the AL flag.
The defending World Series champs from Worcester returned to the Fall Classic despite failing
to lead the National League in any major hitting, pitching, or fielding category. The Grays
played to their potential only, it seemed, when they had to, thrashing their nearest rival
in head-to-head play and – with a mix of pluck and luck – going an unlikely 18-6 in extra-inning
affairs to win the pennant by a mere three games. But like the Blues, this was a club suited
to its own park, the cozy confines of Fenway that invited its right-handed sluggers to bang
balls against and over its fabled left-field wall while reminding its pitchers to minimize
enemy damage by keeping base-runners to a minimum.
The Series opened in Kansas City and, surprisingly, it was Worcester that made itself right
at home. The Blues’ MVP candidate, Cecil Travis, booted Charlie Gehringer’s roller on the
game’s first pitch and after being sacrificed to second, the second sacker streaked across
the plate on the heels of a Frankie Hayes single. Then with two outs, Bob Johnson launched
a mammoth shot over the left-field fence to stake the Grays to an early 3-0 lead. As it
turned out, that would be all the visitors would need. Veteran right-hander Paul Derringer
limited the Blues to just six hits and a pair of runs in a route-going effort, while
Worcester tacked on four more marks for good measure in the middle frames against Bobo
Newsom to take the first game, 7-2.

SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
In Game Two, Worcester rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the 7th by scoring a brace of runs -
thanks in large part to another critical error by Travis – and brought in its ace southpaw,
Vito Tamulis, to shut the door. In the bottom of the 8th, though, Kansas City caught
two-out lightning in a bottle, as Wally Moses singled home a pair to put the Blues back
on top, 4-3. Worcester managed to tie it up in the top of the 9th when Travis’ second
error of the game – and third of the young Series – allowed Gehringer to score. Then
Buddy Rosar singled to lead off the home half, stole second, moved to third on a Travis
ground out, and slid across the plate on a Tamulis wild pitch to give the home nine a
thrilling 5-4 victory that evened the Series at a game apiece.

SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 3
With the Series shifting to Worcester, the Grays sent Johnny Babich to the hill in Game
Three. An erratic performer all year long, Babich had drawn the wrath of team fans and
scribes alike, but this day he was on his game, going seven strong innings and limiting
the Blues to seven hits and two runs. And once again, Worcester got help from its new
best friend, the hapless Travis, whose first inning error helped the Grays to a quick pair
of tallies (he muffed his FIFTH of the series later in the afternoon), and local hero Bob
Johnson who hammered a two-run homer in the third to stake Babich to a 4-1 lead. Solid
relief work by Jim Tobin helped stave off a late comeback by Kansas City, and the Grays
prevailed, 4-3, to go up a game.

SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 4
Derringer took the mound again the next day, squaring off against Kansas City’s Dick
Errickson. The Grays got out of the gate fast again, on the strength of Hayes’s two-run
homer in the first, increasing their lead to 3-0 in the second, thanks to yet another
miscue by Travis. A Lavagetto single in the fourth made it 4-0, but the Blues rallied
for a pair of their own in the 7th to creep closer. Then in the top of the 9th the
Series took what, in hindsight, may have been its most fateful turn. Billy Werber opened
by lining a single to left. Joe Gordon followed with a double into the left field corner
and the speedy Werber surprised nearly everybody by racing around third towards home. But
Joe Medwick’s relay was square and true to shortstop Eddie Miller, and Miller fired a bullet
to Hayes to nail Werber. The play proved critical when Moses followed with an infield hit,
and Rosar grounded into a fielder’s choice, which resulted in just a single run. Derringer
then retired pinch-hitter Crash Davis, giving the Grays a harrowing 4-3 win that brought
them within a game of another title.

SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 5
Junior Thompson made his second start of the series in Game 5 as Worcester looked to clinch
at home, facing Bobo Newsom, who was roughed up in the opener. But the Blues ace was on his
game this time, and for seven innings matched Thompson pitch for pitch. Then, in the 8th,
Kansas City pinch-hitter Les Scarsella doubled home Harry Craft to put Kansas City ahead, 2-1.
The visitors added a pair of runs in the 9th off Lefty Grove, and rookie southpaw Ken Raffensberger
held Worcester hitless over the final two frames to send the series back to Kansas City.

SPB3-1940 WORLD SERIES GAME 6
In Game Six, the Grays decided to start Tamulis instead of Babich and the Blues countered
with young Manny Salvo. As they had done repeatedly throughout the Series, the Grays scored
right away - on a Hayes single - then stretched the lead to 2-0 on a Hayes triple in the 5th.
Kansas City rallied to tie in the 6th on back to back sacrifice flies by Joe Gordon and Frank
McCormick, but Worcester responded with two of its own in the top of the 7th when Jim Gleeson
tripled home Gehringer and Hayes followed with a sac fly of his own. A home run by Miller in
the 8th made it 5-2, and Tamulis glided into the bottom of the 9th as the champagne was being
chilled in the Worcester clubhouse.
Then, all hell broke loose.
McCormick led off with a single and Travis followed with another. The Worcester pen sat silently.
Werber singled up the middle to score McCormick and move Travis to second. Doc Cramer bounced
into a force play, but Rosar then singled to score Travis, making it 5-4. Hurriedly, Mace Brown
and Lefty Grove began to warm up for Worcester as the dangerous Debs Garms stepped in to pinch-hit
for Harry Eisenstat. Tamulis induced Garms to force Rosar at second, with Cramer moving to third.
Down a run, with two outs, rookie Mike McCormick took his place in the batter’s box. The Worcester
infield convened at the mound with Tamulis and Hayes to buy Brown more time, but in the far corner
of the Grays’ dugout, the skipper merely nodded to his improbable ace to finish things off.
Tamulis heaved a deep breath, went into his wind, and fired a fastball straight down the heart
of the plate. McCormick whistled it into center for a hit scoring Cramer to tie it up as
pandemonium reverberated in every corner of Griffith Canyon. With Garms now on third representing
the winning run and Wally Moses stepping to bat, Tamulis was left to settle his own fate. Reaching
back and down inside, the journeyman southpaw who rose so suddenly to stardom this year found one
last source of inspiration and fanned Moses to force the game into extra frames.
No team in 1940 thrived in extra innings like the Grays and, despite the shock of the 9th, today
would prove no different. In the top of the 11th, Gleeson led off with his third triple of the
series, and following a walk to Hayes, Hal Trosky grounded an opposite field hit off Bill Dietrich
to put Worcester on top, 6-5. Working his second inning of relief, Mace Brown surrendered a lead-off
single to Cramer in the bottom of the 11th, but struck out Rosar, got Garms to bounce out, then
fanned Scarsella to end it.3
Frankie Hayes was named Series MVP for his six RBIs (including three in the finale), as the Grays
took a second straight title in a grueling struggle, four of the six contests decided by a single
run. Pitching, power, and patience proved to Worcester’s advantage - the Blues managed just seven
walks and a single home run in the Series, while the Grays drew twenty-two free passes and went
long five times. But most critically of all, perhaps, the Blues did not handle things well afield,
making nine miscues that led to runs they could not afford to give away in such a closely-fought match. .
And if the end was disappointing for this game Kansas City club, it was most poignantly so for Cecil
Travis, the team’s heart and soul. After an astonishing regular season that saw him hit .374 and
handle glove chores at both shortstop and third base, Travis simply unraveled on the October stage,
batting just .192 and committing six errors, most of which were costly. The nightmares of his last
week notwithstanding, though,we trust the voters will remember when the post-season awards are passed
out that this young man was the best player in baseball in 1940..
