A.L.Champions Maumee River Carp vs. N.L.Champions Worcester Grays
SPB3-1942 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
Bucky Walters of the Worcester Grays squared off on the banks of the Maumee River to face
Carp ace Johnny Vander Meer, and it was a pitchers’ duel all the way, though not the cleanest
of such. Vander Meer retired the Grays in order in the first, and, after Elbie Fletcher led
off with a double, Walters returned the favor. In the second inning, the Carp ace got two quick
outs, then walked Nick Etten, and former Carp Dario Lodigiani singled him to third. But Danning
grounded harmlessly to Fletcher to end the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, Walters again gave
up a lead-off hit, but retired the remaining batters. The Grays broke through in the top of the
3rd. After Walters grounded out, Frey, Marion, and Spence strung together 3 straight singles to
plate a run. But “Indian Bob” Johnson grounded into a double play to end the threat. Walters
retired the Carp, messily, in the 3rd and fourth, while Vander Meer recovered to toss a scoreless
fourth and fifth himself. In the bottom of the fifth, Fletcher led off with a walk, and after
Walters retired Clift and Kreevich, he deposited a fat pitch over the plate for the Carp’s most
unheralded offensive star Mike Chartak, who returned the deposit into the bleachers fro a two-run
lead. The Grays looked to get the run back by opening the 6th with two singles. Chet Laabs sacrificed
the runners into scoring position and Etten walked to load the bases. But Vander Meer bore down,
striking out Lodigiani and getting Danning to ground out to Clift to end the threat. Neither pitcher
was dominant before the ninth inning, but both hung in, hurling scoreless baseball. In the top of
the 9th, sensing the finish line, Vander Meer bore down, striking out Danning and pinch-hitter
Arky Vaughan, and getting Lonnie Frey to ground out for the 2-1 CG victory. Carp lead the series
1 game to none.

SPB3-1942 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
The Grays sent Cliff Melton to the mound, and the Carp countered with Tex Hughson. In the
first two innings, both pitchers sandwiched outs around solitary base runners; Hughson
struck out half the batters he faced. After Hughson retired the Grays in order, Buster
Maynard greeted Melton with a single and stole second, enabling Harlond Clift to double
him in for the first run. In the top of the fourth, Stan Spence led off with a single,
and after Johnson struck out for the second time in the game, Hughson balked Spence to
second. Arky Vaughan singled him home, then Etten doubled Vaughan to 3rd before Clyde Kluttz
grounded out to end the threat with the score tied at 1. After giving up a lead-off single to
Mike Kreevich, Melton retired the Carp to end the 4th. Hughson gave up a single to Marty
Marion to lead off the fifth, but again got the next 3 batters. In the bottom of the fifth,
after Maynard flied out, Bob Swift doubled. Hughson moved him over with a ground ball, then
Clift singled him home for the second run. Melton wild-pitched him to second, then Phil Rizzuto
tripled home Clift for the 3-1 lead. Kreevich singled home Rizzuto, leaving the game at 4-1.
In the top of the 6th, the Grays rallied. After the hitless Johnson grounded out harmlessly,
Laaps singled, moved to second on Vaughan’s hit, then with both runners in scoring position,
Clyde Kluttz singled them both home, making it 4-3. The Carp tried to add an insurance run in
the botton of the 6th after Babe Young doubled, but Melton finished his work for the game by
retiring the home team. The Grays put two singles together in the top of the seventh without
scoring, and that’s how it ended. Carp win 4-3 to go up 2 games to none.

SPB3-1942 WORLD SERIES GAME 3
The series shifted to Worcester, MA for game 3, as the Carp pit Joe Dobson against
Jim Tobin. The Carp jumped out to an early lead, as Tobin walked the first two batters,
gave up a run-scoring single to Kreevich and another to Chartak. Rizzuto was retired on
a force, Goodman walked, but Tobin finally ended the inning with a strikeout of Lou Stringer
and a ground ball. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Grays struck back with a Stan
Spence solo home run to halve the score. The Carp got that run back in the third as Phil
Rizzuto found an unlikely power stroke, poking the ball into the seats. The Carp added on
further in the fifth, as veteran Ival Goodman deposited two runs with a 2-out single, making
it 5-1. Dobson suddenly couldn’t find the plate in the bottom of the 6th, as he walked three
batters in a row. One scored on a ground out, but he began to find a second wind. Ernie White
and Johnny Lanning found a belated edge for the Grays from the mound, but the final score
remained 5-2. Dobson pitched the complete game, striking out 8 and walking 6. The Carp were
up 3 games to none.

SPB3-1942 WORLD SERIES GAME 4
The Grays sent Game 1 starter Bucky Walters back to the mound for Game 4, while the Carp countered
with their 4th different starter, Whit Wyatt. There ensued the best-pitched game of the whole series.
Walters gave up only a 1st inning walk in the first three innings, striking out the side in the 2nd.
Meanwhile, Wyatt struck out the lead-off batter in each of the first three innings. Both pitchers faced
just 10 batters each in the first three frames. The fourth inning began with two singles for the Carp,
but Walters somehow induced Chartak, Rizzuto, and Goodman each to fly out to Indian Bob in left. In the
bottom of the fifth, after Vaughan flied out to Chartak, Nick Etten singled, Marty Marion doubled him to
3rd, then Danning brought him in with a ground out to Rizzuto, as the Grays got on the board first, for
the first time since game 1.
Indeed Walters was masterful, and it looked increasingly like the Grays would finally get into the win column.
He retired the Carp in order in the 6th, and Wyatt held his own, controlling the damage by allowing only a
harmless Bob Johnson single in the 6th, just his second hit. The top of the seventh was one of those charmed
innings that seem to foreshadow victory. Chartak singled and went to second as Spence bobbled the ball. Rizzuto
flew out, but Chartak moved to third. Goodman dribbled an infield grounder, but Etten chose to throw to the
plate, getting CHartak for the second out, and when the hitless Stringer flied out, the Grays had escaped with
the lead intact. Wyatt hurled his third 1-2-3 inning of the game in the bottom half of the inning, leaving it
1-0 Worcester after 7.
However, Bob Swift singled to start the second, and after Wyatt bunted him to second, Elbie Fletcher placed
a ball in the bleachers and, just as quickly, it was suddenly 2-1 Carp. Walters was now shaky. Clift singled,
and after Young grounded out, Chartak singled him to third, advancing to 2nd on Johnson’s bobble. But Rizzuto
grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom half of the eighth, Danning reached on Stringer’s error, and
was bunted to second by pinch-hitter Peanuts Lowrey. But Wyatt struck out Frey and got Spence to fly to
Kreevich, ending it. Lon Warneke came on in the 9th to pitch a 1-2-3 inning for the Carp. But Wyatt stayed
on and retired the Grays meekly to end it with the 2-1 final.
The Carp sweep the series in four games, each game getting a complete game pitching performance. It was
truly a team effort. Six different batters had 2 rbi each, with Mike Chartak leading the field with 3 in his
3 games of play. Phil Rizzuto was awarded the Golden Bat for batting .353 with a double, triple, and home run.
Whit Wyatt turned in the strongest pitching performance, allowing only one run on four hits, striking out 7.
For the Grays, Stan Spence was the hitting star, matching Rizzuto’s batting average. Walters pitched well in
both games but suffered two losses.
Bob Johnson was, officially, the goat. The only bona-fide home-run hitter on the field could manage just 2
singles for the whole series.
Congratulations to Hugh on a strong season, but also to Don Rahn who came within a game of the pennant in
the National League, and to Jim Scott, who came just as close in the American League, missing out on the
pennant only because of a lackluster September.
