Niskayuna MicroMets vs. Baltimore Redbirds
SPB5-1990 WS GAME 1
The 1990 World Series opened up on a clear 70 degree day, October 12th, at Baltimore’s Veterans Stadium.
Frank Viola and Ramon Martinez hooked up for game 1 and both pitchers lived up to pre-game hype with
dominating performances. The game was scoreless after five and with both pitchers allowing only 2 hits.
With one out in the top of the sixth SS Kent Anderson lined a single to left center and Danny Tartabull
then laced a double in the gap sending Anderson to third. Viola then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed
Anderson to score and Tartabull to reach third. Alvin Davis sac flied Tartabull home to give the Micro
Mets a 2-0 lead. The Birds tied it up in the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Kevin Maas drilled
a two run pinch hit homer to right. The bullpens then took over as both teams were held scoreless from
the 8th to the 12th innings. The Mets had an excellent chance in the top of the 12th when they loaded
the bases with one out. However, Paul Assemacher came in and struck out Chris Gwynn and got pinch hitter
Ken Caminiti to line out to left. In the bottom of the 13th pinch hitter Mike Fitzgerald ended the affair
with a single to left driving in Travis Fryman who scored ahead of leftfielder Kirk Gibsons throw and
the Birds went up 1-0 in the series with a 3-2 victory.

SPB5-1990 WS GAME 2
The Birds put Ed Whitson on the mound to oppose the Micro Mets John Smoltz. Neither pitcher was
effective. Whitson allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in three innings before being pulled from the game.
Smoltz was a little bit better but he still allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks in 6.1 innings.
The Mets got on the board in the top of the first when Alvin Davis doubled home Hal Morris who had
singled and stolen second. The Birds tied it in their half of the first when Tony Gwynn scored on
a Smoltz wild pitch. Smoltz helped his own cause in the top of the second with a two-run single
putting the Mets up 3-1. In the top of the 4th the Mets increased their lead to 5-1 on a Ron Oester
rbi single and Kurt Stillwell later scored on a Kirk Gibson groundout. The Birds added one in the
bottom of the 4th and two more in the 5th to close the gap to 5-4. However, Vincente Palacios
hurled 2.2 innings of shutout relief to save the game for Smoltz and send the Mets back to Niskayuna
knotted up at one game apiece.

Game 3: Steve Wilson (Baltimore) at Kevin Tapani (Niskayuna)
The Redbirds draw first blood in the top of the 1st when Bonds strokes a 2-out double,
moves to 3rd on a passed ball and scores on an infield single by Tettleton. All heck breaks
loose in the top of the 3rd as Baltimore scores 5 more unearned runs, 4 on a a Travis Fryman
grand slam. Tony Gwynn got the inning started when he reach on a Kent Anderson error. The
teams exchanged runs in the 4th with Niskayuna's run coming on a Danny Tartabull solo shot.
The 6th was a wild inning. In the top of the 6th with 2 out and nobody on, Bonds singled.
Tettleton followed with an RBI double, reaching 3B on another Anderson error, and scoring on
another Alomar passed ball. The two runs looked much more important when the MicroMets
responded with 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Anderson led off the bottom of the
6th with a single and Wilson then lost his control giving up consecutive walks to Tartabull
and Davis. Anderson scored on a Alomar infield single - and the Tom Brookens came to bat.
Brookens hit a grand slam deep down the LF line, making the score 9-6 Baltimore. McCullers
replaced Wilson and recorded 3 straight outs - two by strikeout. Baltimore made it an 11-6
game in the 8th as Milligan and Bonds homered on consecutive pitches. Mike Jackson closed
out the final two innings without allowing a hit. Final score: Baltimore 11 Niskayuna 6.

Game 4: Steve Wilson (Baltimore) at Ramon Martinez (Niskayuna)
Barry Bonds got things started with a 2-out solo shot in the top of the 1st inning off of
Martinez. Niskayuna bounces back big with three in the bottom of the 1st on a 2-run Chris
Gwynn homer followed immediately by a Hal Morris solo shot. However, once again Baltimore
brings out the big bats and make mince meat out of Martinez. A bunch of singles followed
by a Phillips 3-run homer resulted in 5 runs and a 6-3 score. Niskayuna misses a scoring
opportunity in the 3rd when the inning ends on a doubleplay fly ball with Tony Gwynn throwing
brother Chris out at the plate attempting to tag up. After giving up another run in the 4th
Martinez is removed for a pinch hitter. No more runs the rest of the way and Niskayuna finds
itself in a 3-1 hole. Final Score: Baltimore 7 Niskayuna 3.

Game 5: Frank Viola (Baltimore) at Dana Kiecker (Niskayuna)
Kiecker and the Niskayuna defense struggled in the top of the 1st as Phillips
singled with one out and reached 2nd on a wild pitch. After Bonds walked Tettleton
singled home Phillips. After Maas walked to load the bases Bonds scored on a
Brookens error. Following a forceout at home Franco singled in the 3rd and final
run of the inning. It could have been much worse. The teams exchange runs in the
2nd and then Bonds makes it a 5-1 game with a solo shot in the 4th after Niskayuna
fails to score in the 3rd due to aggressive baserunning that didn't work. Niskayuna
made it a 1-run game as Gibson hit a 2-run bases loaded double with Sax driving in
the third run on a groundout. Bonds scored on a Dion James single in the top of the
7th, making it 6-4. Bonds did it again in the 8th - hitting a 3-run homer off of
Patterson. Burke retired the MicroMets in order in the 9th to end the series.

MVP honors should go to Barry Bonds. Bonds went 11 for 18 at the plate (.611) with
