Baltimore Redbirds vs. Quigley Q's
SPB5-1992 ALCS GAME 1
The Quigley Q’s came into Baltimore straight off of a two game divisional championship
playoff with their arch rival the Black Swamp Salamanders. Meanwhile Baltimore marched
into the playoffs with a strong September, rested and ready to duel once again with their
playoff rival Quigley for their fourth postseason matchup.
On a beautiful and clear October evening Baltimore’s Frank Viola matched zeroes for six
innings against his Quigley counterpart Jose Rijo. Neither pitcher was in any danger for
the six and Viola breezed through the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh MVP
candidate Barry Bonds stroked a leadoff single and stole second. Mickey Tettleton walked to
put two men on. Pinch hitter Chico Walker grounded out to the right side moving both runners
up a base. Then catcher Chris Hoiles let a large breaking curveball past him for a passed ball
and Bonds scampered home with the games first run and Tettleton moved over to third. Rijo then
walked Tony Gwynn, struck out Bret Barberie and gave up a run scoring single to Travis Fryman.
After walking pinch hitter Dion James to load the bases, reliever Greg Olson came in a promptly
walked Ricky Henderson which scored Gwynn giving the Redbirds a 3-0 lead. Olson then struck out
Phillips to end the long inning. The two Mikes, relievers Jackson and Perez then came in and
shut down the Q’s and Baltimore finished game one with a 3-0 win and up 1-0 in the series.

SPB5-1992 ALCS GAME 2
Game 2 was played in another lovely October evening and the matchup featured the Q’s
Jose DeLeon versus the Rebirds Greg Harris. Baltimore jumped into the lead early with
Brian Downing singling home Tony Phillips in the first and Tony Gwynn singling Phillips
home in the third for a 2-0 Redbird lead. Quigley finally got a run on the scoreboard
in the fourth when Daryl Hamilton hit a sac fly to center to plate Chris Hoiles from third.
Harris then committed the ultimate pitcher mistake by walking fellow pitcher Greg Olson
in the fifth. One batter later he paid the highest price when Orlando Merced homered to
center to put the Q’s on top 3-2. In the sixth the Q’s solidified their lead with a two
out rally that saw Darnell Coles plating Bobby Bonilla home with a single and then
hustling around the basepath to score on a Tony Fernandez double. Relievers Steve Farr
and Bob Ayrault then combined to hurl four shutout relief innings and Quigley tied the
series with a 5-2 win.

Gregg Olson wrapped up the 2-1 victory pitching flawlessly in the last two innings with four
punch-outs. A two-run home run by Guillermo Velasquez in the bottom of the sixth was all that
was needed by Quigley.

What a huge comeback by the Q's. Down 7-1, Quigley fans took their seventh inning stretch
with a lot of enthusiasm but also with a large dose of major concern. A three-run rally in
the bottom half of the seventh renewed their optimism. Five runs in the eighth, capped by
Lou Whitaker's three-run homer, gave the Q's a 9-7 lead. Steve Farr pitched the ninth for
the victory.

SPB5-1992 ALCS GAME 6
Game 6 was played in Baltimore with the Redbirds down three games to two. Pete Harnisch,
who took a tough loss in game 3, went to the mound for the Birds and the Q’s countered with
Cal Eldred. Both pitcher were on their game and no one crossed the plate until the Q’s Tony
Fernandez plated Felix Jose with a two out single in the top of the fifth. Despite giving up
five walks Eldred was even tougher not allowing a run through his seven innings. But in the
bottom of the eighth Travis Fryman had a run scoring two out single to tie up the game. The
the bullpens took over and put up goose eggs in the ninth and tenth. In the top of the eleventh
Bobby Bonilla broke the Redbirds fans hearts by popping a solo homer to put the Q’s up 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning Tony Phillips countered with two out run scoring single to tie
the game. This brought up MVP candidate Barry Bonds who lauched a 2-1 Ayrault pitch into
the rightfield seats for a 4-2 come-from-behind victory sending the local fans home worn
but happy.

Game 7 matched up Redbird Frank Viola and Q’ Jose Rijo for their third go around in
the series. Viola bested Rijo 3-0 in the opener and both were roughed up in non
decision outings in a 9-7 Q’s win in game four. Viola struggled in the third giving
up 2 runs and was lifted in the bottom of the inning for a pinch hitter. Reliever
Wally Whitehurst added fuel to the fire by giving up 3 runs in the fourth and Rijo
and a pair of relievers never allowed Baltimore to get back in the game as Quigley
waltzed to a 6-1 win and their second championship series victory over the Redbirds
in four meetings between the two teams since 1987.
Congratulations on the win. We have now split our four divisional championships.
