Birmingham Cloverleafs vs. Kitsilano Hedgehogs
SPB5-1993 N.L. Divisional Series GAME 1
Birmingham comes to Kitsilano to enjoy the ocean air and mountain views, and hopefully
(for them) pull off a major upset. And for a while, that looks possible. Alan Watson (4-8)
starts Game One as a decided underdog against Mark Langston (19-6). The Leafs strike early,
as Tim Salmon’s 2-out double in the first is followed by an RBI single from Tino Martinez,
and just like that it’s 1-0. The Hedghogs get that back quickly, as Jeff Bagwell, following
a stellar regular season (.367 – 30 – 122) opens his playoff with a solo HR in the 2nd. After
that, it’s all about the pitching, as neither Watson nor Langston are ever in serious trouble.
In the 7th, Watson leaves for a pinch hitter, and when Mohler comes in n the bottom of the 8th,
he faces little used and easily forgotten Dave Silvestri, hitting for Langston. Silvestri stuns
the Leafs, his teammates, the 46,234 fans on hand, a continent wide TV audience, and the Orca’s
at the Vancouver Aquarium, banging a long HR to left for a 2-1 lead. That’s all she wrote for the
Leafs in this one, as Todd Jones makes quick work of them in the ninth. Kitsilano leads, 1-0

Game 2 pits surprise starter Brian Bohanon (1-8) up against John Burkett (16-12). The real
surprise for Bohanon though is the number of lead gloves behind him. Bohanon doesn’t get out
of the second inning, as Kitsilano jumps all over the Leafs for 8 runs n the first two frames.
Of course, it isn’t all Bohanon’s fault – none of the 6 runs he is charged with are earned.
The Leafs make three errors behind him – and three more later in the game, literally tossing
the game away. The first two batters in the 1st inning reach on errors, and a few doubles and
a hit batsman later, it’s 5-0 and all over but the shouting. Burkett cruises through 7
innings, allowing only a solo HR to Dean Palmer, and the 8-1 romp makes the upcoming plane
trip to Birmingham very enjoyable.
