SPB5-1995 ALCS GAME 3
Game #3 LCS October 14, 1995
Pandora Boxers @ Lafayette Red Sox
Down two games to nothing, their aces Maddux and Johnson having failed on the road
against Pandora, the Lafayette Red Sox came home in a sour, but determined mood. On
the mound for the Crimson Hose was Kevin Ritz, an off-season acquisition who had posted
a 10-11 record for 1995 with a 3.71 ERA. Opposing the 3o-year-old Lafayette hurler was
Todd Van Poppel, a 23-year old right-hander who had won 11 while losing but 7 with a
sparkling 2.79 ERA for the visiting Boxers. The advantage seemed to be with Pandora,
but Ritz, despite his September struggles, was a tough veteran in Lafayette’s Kingdome.
Ritz’ late-season collapse was on full display, as the Boxers put up 6 quick runs, led
by Archi Cianfrocco’s 2-run shot and Rondell White’s 1-run shot in the 3rd inning,
followed by Cianfrocco’s encore 3-run double in the 4th frame. Archi was in line to be
the hero who had put the defending champs on life support.
To compound Lafayette’s dilemma, David Segui punched across another run with a 5th inning
single. New hurler John Russell wiggled out of the inning with a Luis Gonzalez double play
and a Jose Hernandez ground out. With the score 7-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning,
Lafayette hardly had hope. Manager Ehresman was consoling himself that this team had made
the post-season 2 years in a row with less than stellar hitting. Pandora was only a few out
away from an insurmountable 3-0 advantage in the LCS.
In the bottom of the 6th frame, Mike Lansing struck out. Then, disaster struck for Manager
LaBurda’s visiting Boxers. After 2 singles by reliable veterans Will Clark and Gary Gaetti,
an error by Boxer shortstop Jose Hernandez, and another single by Jay Bell, the Red Sox could
take consolation that they had avoided a shutout at the hands of the young hurler Van Poppel.
After Michael Tucker whiffed, the hometown Sox, with Jerald Clark and Jay Bell on base, focused
on 26-year-old catcher Ed Taubensee and his left-handed power bat. In his previous at bat in
the 5th inning, pinch-hitter for veteran backstop Ron Tingley, Taubensee had hit into a
rally-killing double play. This time, however, Taubensee deposited a Van Poppel offering
into the right centerfield stands for a 3-run tater. Although new Pandora hurler Tony Fossas
squirmed out of the inning with no further damage, the score now stood at 7-5 in favor of the
visiting Boxers, but the momentum had shifted.
The Red Sox tallied another run in the home half of the 7th, as fleet centerfielder Chuck Carr
drove home Jerald Clark with a single to right. Taubensee, with a chance to do further damage,
struck out to end the inning. The score stood at 7-6, as Pandora clung to the lead.
Then came the bottom of the 8th inning. New Pandora pitcher Xavier Hernandez was on the mound,
and pinch-hitter Tony Clark greeted him with a lead-off double. Jerome Walton walked, and Mike
Lansing was hit by a pitch. Bases juiced. Manager LaBurda hustled out of the dugout, took the
ball from the trembling Hernandez, and summoned Jose DeLeon from the pen.
Could he wiggle free? Nope.
Will Clark singled in Tony Clark and Jerome Walton and advanced Mike Lansing to third. Veteran
Gary Gaetti stepped in and hit DeLeon’s offering deep down the left-field line. Did it have the
distance? Yes! A three-run blast from the bat of Gary Gaetti finished the scoring, but now the
Boxers trailed 11-7. Manager LaBurda, disgusted, spit out his Mountain Dew, but otherwise showed
no emotion. After all, his Boxers had already beaten Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson and had come
to Lafayette leading the LCS 2-0.
Greg McMichael come in to record a one-two-three 9th inning save, as the stunned visitors went
down without a fight.
My word! What would tomorrow bring? A match-up of aces, as Orel Hershiser of Pandora and Greg
Maddux of Lafayette would take the mound for Game #4. This was getting interesting.

of the LCS in Pandora, the Lafayette ace (22-6 with a 1.57 ERA), Mad Dog was eager to avenge
the loss the Boxers had inflicted on the Red Sox back on October 11th, as a host of Lafayette
hurlers had scrambled to compensate for their star hurler’s sudden exit after 1.1 innings and
a 1-run lead. Maddux was opposed by wily Boxer hurler Orel Hershiser (19-5 with a 3.27 ERA
for the season).
Determined to make amends, Maddux faced the Pandora lead-off hitter, Rondell White. Unfortunately,
for the Red Sox, Maddux endured a rough and uncertain first inning.
Immediately, Rondell White rapped a single, swiped second, exploiting Maddux weakness for
allowing stolen bases, and scampered to third on Sean Berry’s ground single between first
and second. Already in trouble, Greg! Buckling down, Maddux struck out Boxer backstop Charles
Johnson. Unimpressed, thorn-in-the-side David Segui singled in White for Pandora’s first tally.
Reaching for something extra, Maddux whiffed dangerous Luis Gonzalez, but Jose Hernandez, making
up for his error in Lafayette’s come-from-behind victory in game #4, tripled to right center to
plate both Berry and Segui. Chuck Knoblauch ended the Pandora first inning with a ground out.
Lafayette was in 3-0 hole, even with ace Greg Maddux on the hill.
In the home half of the 4th inning, Lafayette struck back. After Will Clark opened with a single,
hot corner veteran Gary Gaetti hit a home run deep down the left field line to bring the Red Sox
to within 1 run. Although the Crimson Hose went down in order after Gaetti’s clout, they began to
believe that this game could, and would be won.
In the bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter Jerald Clark opened with a triple. It seemed a futile
effort, a Jay Bell popped to third. Taubensee walked. Dave Hulse came to the dish, pinch hitting
for the starter Maddux with runners on first and third, and grounded weakly to short. Clark dashed
toward home but was gunned down for the second out of the inning, while Hulse reached on the fielder’s
choice. Michael Tucker drew a walk from Orel Hershiser, filling the bases. Hershiser, usually
rock steady, unleashed a wild pitch to score Taubensee from third. Then, Orel walked Mike Lansing
to load the bases once again. Not finished with his bout of uncharacteristic wildness, the veteran
Hershiser walked Will Clark to push across another run, making the tally 4-3 in favor of Lafayette.
Dangerous Gary Gaetti grounded to short to force Clark and end the 7th frame.
Greg McMichael (20 Saves 3.02 ERA for 1995) took the mound for Lafayette to get 6 outs and a win.
It was not to be, as Boxer third sacker Sean Berry (a blistering 3.61 with 25 home runs and 90 RBI
for the season) greeted him immediately with a homer deep to left. The Boxers then turned mild and
were retired 1-2-3 to end the 8th inning.
Jose DeLeon was back on the mound for Manager LaBurda’s Boxers. Duplicating Sean berry’s feat in
the top of the 8th, Jerome Walton led off the home half of the frame with a bomb to left field.
The Red Sox jumped back on top 5-4 and held on for the victory, as McMichael recorded both a blown
save and an all important save to seal the victory and even the LCS at 2 games apiece. The
momentum had begun to shift toward the Red Sox.

SPB5-1995 ALCS GAME 5
Game #5 LCS October 16, 1995
Pandora Boxers @ Lafayette Red Sox
For game #5, the final contest at Lafayette’s Kingdome, Manager LaBurda chose Game #1 starter,
Greg Swindell, to match up against the Red Sox’s formidable Randy Johnson, whose defense betrayed
him in game #2 at the Boxers’ home park, Jacobs Field.
Unlike the previous contests in Kingdome in which the hometown boys fell behind, the Red Sox struck
first, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning. With one out, Gaetti walked. Then, after Gaetti had
reached third and Mark Whitten had pulled into second on an error by Pandora’s left fielder Scott
Bullet, Dave Hulse came through with a clutch double, driving both men home. That completed Lafayette’s
scoring in the second inning.
The Pandora Boxers came back to tie the game in the seventh inning. After back-to-back singles by John
Valentin and Chuck Knoblauch, with Knoblauch taking second on a strange lapse of judgment by Lafayette
(catcher’s indifference), pinch hitter Jose Hernandez drove them home with a ground ball single between
third and short. The fighting Boxers had knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh. With
Xavier Hernandez on the hill for Pandora, Mark Whitten led off the bottom of the inning with a huge
home run down the left field line to give the Red Sox a 3-2 advantage.
Randy Johnson hung on to blank the Boxers in the 8th and the 9th, striking out 12 and securing the
complete game victory for Lafayette.
On to Pandora’s Jacobs Field and a match up of Kevin Ritz for Lafayette and Game #2 winner, Mark
Petkovsek of the Boxers.
