Game 1, 10/21/1997 Vultures @ Moondogs
Pat Hentgen of the Vultures squared off against Rick Reed of the Moondogs. A lot of hits and sloppy pitching
characterized both teams in this game. Mike Piazza of the Moondogs started things off with a moonshot in the
1st inning, but the Vultures tied the score on Jay Bell’s sacrifice fly plated Gerald Williams who had doubled.
The Moondogs’ Chris Stynes doubled to start the 3rd inning, scoring on Carlos Delgado’s grounder. The Vultures
tied the score in the 4th on Jay Bell’s rbi single, and then the Vultures erupted in the 5th off Reed. Tony Gwynn
led off with a home run, Tino Martinez followed one batter later, then Jay Bell doubled home 2 more. The Moondogs’
Delgado doubled home one run in the 5th, then got two more runs back in the 6th on Mark Smith’s 2-run homer. Steve
Reed, in to relieve Rick Reed in the 7th, was greeted by a homer off the bat of Edgar Alfonzo. The 8th inning saw
him even less able to hold things at bay, as he gave up 4 more home runs in the inning, to Manny Ramirez, Tino
Martinez, and Ivan Rodriguez back-to-back-to-back, then Alfonzo with one on.

Game 2, 10/22/1997 Vultures @ Moondogs
Hoping to recover from his shellacking in the LCS, Bobby Jones took the mound for the Vultures
against the Moondogs’ Chuck Finley, and he was greeted in the 1st inning by two quick runs off the
longball bat of Carlos Delgado. The Vultures scraped those two runs back in the 2nd, thanks to a
Neifi Perez triple and Gerald Williams rbi singe. Alfonzo added his 3rd homer of the series to put
the Vultures ahead in the 3rd inning, and extended the lead with his 4th homer in the 6th. An rbi-single
in the 8th extended the Vultures lead to 5-2 in the 8th, with Russ Davis getting one run back in the
bottom of the inning with an rbi-double.

With the games shifting to Atlantic City, Tom Gordon took the mound against the Vultures’ Jamie Moyer.
The Vultures struck first thanks two Tony Gwynn’s 2-run double in the third, and added a 3rd run the
next inning off the potent bat of Moyer. Moyer held the Moondogs at bay on 7 hits into the 9th inning,
when he surrendered a 2-run homer to Russ Davis, cutting the score to 1. Mike Jackson came on to get
the last two outs, saving the game for Moyer and the Vultures.

Game 4 10/25/1997 Moondogs @ Vultures
Game 1 starter Rick Reed of the Moondogs took the mound against another Vultures veteran,
Shane Reynolds. This time Reed was sharp, and the Moondogs got on the board first, in a 3-run
4th inning featuring 3 rbi singles (by Davis, David Bell, and pitcher Reed). The 3-0 score held
until the 7th inning, when a tiring Reed fell apart. With one out, Manny Ramirez singled, moving
to second on a walk to Martinez. I-Rod singled to load the baes, then Reed hit Gerald Williams to
drive in the Vultures 1st run. Edgar Alfonzo doubled home 2 runs to tie the score, then Jay Bell’s
sac fly drove in the go-ahead run. Mike Remlinger came on to work a scoreless 7th for the Vultures,
but the Moondogs greeted 8th inning reliever Antonio Osuno with a lead-off homer off the surprise bat
of Damon Mashore, tying the score. With the score tied in the 9th inning, Brett Tomko came on for
the Vultures and gave up a 2-out homer to Carlos Delgado for the go-ahead run. Doug Jones stayed on
for the Moondogs and retired the Vultures in order in the bottom of the 9th to seal the win.

Game 5 10/26/1997 Moondogs @ Vultures
It is only fitting that Game 5 was the wildest and least certain game of the series. Finley squared
off against Vultures ace Hentgen. This time the Moondogs had the edge. Back-to-back homers by Piazza
and Delgado in the 1st put the Moondogs ahead 2-0, and the score held until the bottom of the 5th,
when the Vultures erupted for 4 runs. Jay Bell and Gerald Williams doubled back to back, and after
Hentgen struck out, Biggio and Alfonzo homered back to back (for Alfonzo, it was his 5th homer of
the series).
Hentgen could not hold the advantage however. The Moondogs tied the score in the 6th, with Jason
Giambi’s unlikely rbi triple and Willie Greene’s rbi grounder. In the 7th, the Moondogs got 2 singles,
chasing Hentgen, then Brandon McCarthy came on to surrender a 3-run homer to Giambi, vaulting the Moondogs
ahead 8-4 after Eric Davis’s pinch single scored Delgado, who had doubled.
That’s when it was the turn of the Moondogs’ bullpen to fall apart. With one out in the 8th inning, and
Mike Trombley on the mound, Tino Martinez uncorked a pinch 3-run homer bringing the Vultures back within
1 run. Steve Reed came on and gave up a single before retiring the side. Spoljaric took the mound to start
the top of the 9th for the Vultures, and was greeted by a walk and single, giving way to Osuna. Osuna
promptly fanned Mark Smith and David Bell, inducing Chris Stynes to ground out ending the inning. Game 5
winner Doug Jones took the mound for the Moondogs, retired the dangerous Alfonzo on a grounder to second,
then Tony Gwynn reached on an error by Delgado. Manny Ramirez, who had been quiet for much of the series,
deposited Jones’s second pitch into the left field seats for the walk-off 2-run homer.
Atlantic City 9 Canton 8 WP Osuna (1-0) LP D.Jones (1-1) Atlantic City wins the series 4-1. For his 5-homer
performance, Edgar Alfonzo was awarded MVP of the series.
