Game 1 – Ronnie Kline vs. Frank Sullivan. The underdog Patriots jump out to an early 3-1 lead
in the 3rd on a Bob Cerv 3-Run HR. The Lightning battle back, banging out runs in the 3rd, 4th
and 5th to take a 4-3 lead. The Patriots tie it in the 7th on a Don Newcombe bases loaded walk
to Bob Skinner, but the Lightning take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a Bob “Hurricane”
Hazel RBI single. They add two more insurance runs in the 8th on a shock 2-RBI single by closer Billy Muffett
to win Game 1 by a score of 7-4.

SPB60-1957 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
Game 2 – Johnny Podres vs. Billy O’Dell. A pitcher’s duel. With the score tied at 2-2 heading
into the bottom of the 7th, Don Hoak singled and was followed by walks to Mantle and Banks to fill
the bases with 1 out. Jim Lemon then had an RBI ground out to put the Lightning up 3-2. It stayed
that way until the 9th when a lead of single by Bob Cerv, who was pinch run for by Bob Clemente, was
sacrificed to 2nd with one out. He advanced to 3rd on a groundout by Foiles. With 2 outs, Roy McMillian
appeared to end the game with a ground ball with 3B Don Hoak, but Hoak booted it, allowing the tying run
to score and we headed to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Charlie Maxwell coaxed a 2-out walk from
Jack Harshman, then C Hank Foiles doubled, scoring the go-ahead run to make it 4-3 Patriots. Don Gross
came in the slammed the door in the bottom of the inning and Schenectady stole game 2 by a score of 4-3.
Series tied at 1-1.

Game 3 – Connie Johnson vs Whitey Ford. Should have been known as the Pinball game, because
there were balls flying everywhere, in a back and forth slugfest. It was 4-3 lightning after
1 inning and 6-6 after 3 innings and 8-8 after the 4th. Louisiana went up 9-8 in the 7th, but
the Patriots opened the flood gates in the bottom of the inning, on a bunch of singles and (2)
errors by the Lightning (who made 4 in the game) to retake the lead 12-9. Duke Snider homered
in the 9th, but that was all the Lightning could muster, as Schenectady won the game 12-10 and
took a 2-1 series lead. Dave Philley was 2 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI to lead the Pats while
Mickey Mantle went 3 for 5 in a losing case for the Lightning.

SPB60-1957 WORLD SERIES GAME 4
Game 4 – Von McDaniel vs. Frank Sullivan. The Lightning sent their ace back to the mound,
while Schenectady sent young Phenom Von McDaniel to the hill. The Pats jumped ALL OVER Sullivan,
and by the time the 2nd inning was over, it was already 7-1 Patriots. The young McDaniel cruised
from there, not giving up another run until the 9th inning, as the underdog Patriots cruised to and
easy 10-2 win and a commanding 3 game to 1 series lead. Johnny Temple and Eddie Mathews each went 4
for 5 in the game with Mathews hitting his 2nd HR of the series. Duke Snider hit 2 Home Runs, his
3rd of the series, in a losing cause for the Lightning. Louisiana’s back were now up against the
wall in their quest for their 5th straight World Series Title.

SPB60-1957 WORLD SERIES GAME 5
Game 5 – Don Newcombe vs. Ronnie Kline. One of the wildest World Series games I have every played in.
The Lightning jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, and added another in the 5th to go up 4-1. Don Newcombe
came up huge, pitching a great game, and the Lightning bats rewarded him again in the 7th inning as they
scored 6 more runs to go up 10-1. Patriots fans began to exit. In the bottom of the 8th, Newc began to
tire, as the Patroits scored 2 runs on an 2-RBI single by Dave Philley to make it 10-3. Then the 9th
inning happened. Newc, who was on fumes, walked Torgeson to lead it off and manager See went out to get
him and brought in Lloyd Merritt. Merritt gave up two singles to Temple and Skinner and the score was now
10-4. See, knowing how badly they needed this game, brought in his top pitcher Billy O’Dell. O’Dell
proceeded to walk the first two batters, then gave up a Sac Fly to Philly which made the score 10-5.
Hank Sauer then pinch hit, and doubled in two more runs, making it 10-7. O’Dell reared back and struck
out C Hank Foiles for the 2nd out and the Lightning could finally see daylight with Roy McMillian coming
to the play with two runners on. McMillian then reached back and had the hit of his life, launching a
3-Run Home Run to tie the game at 10-10!!!!!!!! The Pats had scored 7 runs in the 9th to tie it!!! O’Dell
managed to get the final out to send it to extra innings.
In the 10th, Duke Snider hit a 1 out triple and later scored on a Smokey Burgess infield single as the Lightning
retook the lead 11-10. In the bottom of the 10th with O’Dell still pitching, Johnny Temple led off with a walk
and advanced to 2nd with 2 outs. With 1B open, O’Dell walked the Red Hot Eddie Mathews, and was able to get the
also Red Hot Dave Philly to ground out to preserve a WILD 11-10 win, the keep hope alive for the Lightning as
they headed back home. If they had lost the game, it might have been known as the biggest choke in World Series history!
But alas, we go to Game 6.

Game 6 – Johnny Podres vs. Connie Johnson. Connie Johnson had been shelled in Game 2 by
the Pats, but the Lightning had no choice but to give him another shot at home. Like Don
Newcombe, he came up big. After allowing a run in the top of the 1st, Connie completely
shut down the Patriots potent offense, and the Lightning hitters, led by Gil Hodges (2 for
4 with a 2 HR) where able to turn 4 hits into 4 runs, as the Lightning and Johnson cruised
to a 4-1 Game 6 win, to force and winner take all Game 7. Wally Moon and Roy McMilian both
went 2 for 4 in a losing cause for the Patriots, their only 4 hits of the game as well.

Game 7 – Jack Sanford vs. Frank Sullivan. Could Sullivan bounce back from his Game 4 massacre?
Could Jack Sanford come up big making his 1st World Series start? It was another pitcher’s duel
through the 1st 6 innings. The Lightning opened the scoring with an RBI single by Don Hoak in
the 2nd. It stayed that way until the 6th, when Gil Hodges gave the Lightning a 2-0 lead with
another solo HR. Frank Sullivan had been pitching lights out, until the 7th inning, when Eddie
Mathews led off with a walk and Dave Philley doubled, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with no one out.
Charlie Maxwell hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 2-1, then after a Jerry Lumpe strikeout, Roy McMillian
tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single. After an Earl Torgeson walk, little Johnny Temple gave the
Patriots the lead with an RBI double, and just like that, the Patriots were up 3-2 in the 7th.
With Whitey Ford now on the hill, the Lightning went scoreless in the bottom of the 7th. The Pats
struck again in the top of the 8th off of Billy O’Dell. With 1 out, Eddie Mathews tripled, and the
next batter Dave Philley launched a 2-run blast to give Schenectady a commanding 5-2 lead. It looked
like the Lightning run was about to end as the air had been sucked out of Lightning Field. The Pats
were now 6 outs away from the championship with a 3-run lead.
In the bottom of the 8th, Gil Hodges and Don Hoak each led off with singles to bring the tying run to
the plate with no one out. Ford then walked Bob “Hurricane” Hazel to load the bases. At this point,
Rahn went to the mound to relieve Whitey, and in from the bullpen came young Phenom Von McDaniel to try
to slam the door. Appearing to be a bit nervous, young Von walked veteran Red Schoedienst with the
based juiced to score a run, and the score was now 5-3 Patriots. Pinch hitter Gordon Massa then singled,
scoring another run to cut the score to 5-4. Up stepped the Lightning’s MVP Mickey Mantle, On the 2nd
pitch, the Mick lined a single, scoring both Hazel and Schoendienst, giving the Lightning and incredible
6-5 lead in the game!!!! Lightning fans went crazy. Jim Lemon added a sac fly later in the inning for a
critical insurance run and the Lightning now went to the 9th with an incredible 7-5 comeback lead, and
were amazingly, now just 3 outs away from the World Series title. Though he had struggled, See sent
Billy O’Dell back out for the 9th. He got Roy McMillian for the first out. Got pinch hitter Hank
Sauer for out number 2. Then little Johnny Temple stepped to the plate. Johnny fittingly grounded
out the 1st baseman Gil Hodges, and the Louisiana Lightning had won their ALL TIME SPB record 5th
consecutive World Series title as Hodges and Mantle piled on their teammates on the mound.
World Series Final Notes
Gil Hodges and Mickey Mantle were named Co-MVP’s of the series. Gil had some clutch hits and smashed 2 HR
and 3 triples, and Mickey of course with the game winner in game 7 (he also had 9 hits in the series). Had
the Pats pulled it out, Eddie Mathews and Dave Philley would have easily been Co-MVP’s, as they were on fire
for most of the series, but the Lightning somehow were able to eek out a victory in what was an incredible
series played H2H netplay. Congrats to Don on a fine season, and very nearly pulling off one of the bigger
upsets ever. That near loss in Game 5 in the 9th was just crazy! Another truly EPIC World Series.
