The 1958 World Series Report
The 1958 World Series pitted the AL winner, the Frankfort Frigates who garnered 99 wins and
the NL winner, the Beard Black Cats with 103 wins. Both teams with impressive hitting and pitching
all season who played in two of the best offensive parks, Briggs Stadium and Crosley Field respectively.
If that wasn’t enough it pitted long-time SPB friends, Gary ‘the Creator’ Plunkitt and ‘Trader’ Rick
Ryan matching up for the first time in a World Series.
GAME 1 The series opened at Crosley Field on a beautiful fall day in Beard, 65 degrees, clear skies
and a 13 mph breeze to RF. Billy Pierce, started for the Frigates having gone 15-10 with a save, 3.88,
on the regular season while veteran Bob Friend, 19-6 , 3.82, from nearby West Lafayette, IN stated for
the Black Cats. The Frigates didn’t score in the first, but with 2-out in the bottom of the first, Minnie
Minoso, blasted a HR. Jackie Jensen walked, Del Crandall was HBP, but Joe Adcock struck out. Both pitchers
cruised through each other’s lineups until the top of the 5th when Larry Doby led off with a grounder
to 2B Billy Hunter who threw the routine grounder past Adcock for a 2-base error, Frank Bolling grounded
to SS Dick Groat, but Doby was able to get to 3B. SS Coot Veal walked. Veteran catcher Elston Howard came
up and drilled a grounder just past Adcock and into the RF corner giving the Frigates a 2-1 lead. Pierce
then blasted a 0-1 pitch deep into the RCF bleachers for a 4-1 lead. And the fans could not believe it.
Bruton grounded out and Yost struck out, 4-1.
Nothing again until the 7th when Bolling led off with a single, but Glenn Hobbie entered to get a DP by
Veal and Howard grounded out. In the bottom of the 7th, after Jensen grounded out, catcher Del Crandall
hit a long HR to LF, 4-2, Adcock flied out, Frank Malzone singled but PH’er Chuck Essegian struck out.
In the bottom of the 8th, Don Elston entered for Pierce, after he was PH for and Leon Wagner greeted him
as PH’er with a single, Richie Ashburn singled to shallow CF, Wagner stopping at 2B. Dick Groat attempted
to bunt but popped out, Minoso struck out, but Jensen singled to CF to plate Wagner, 4-3. Crandall ended
the inning flying out to LF.
In the bottom of the 9th, Adcock led off with a walk, was PR for by Sam Esposito. Dick Hyde replaced Elston.
Malzone grounded out and Esposito moved to 2B. Pete Runnels grounded back to Hyde, no advance for Esposito,
Mickey Vernon PH and walked, but with runners at 1B and 2B, Ashburn popped up to 2B to end the game and the
Frigates took a 1-0 series lead.

WORLD SERIES GAME 2
GAME 2 The series continued at Crosley Field but a significant drop in the temperature,
48 degrees, partly cloudy and the wind out to CR at 18 MPH. Much later to become a Senator,
Jim Bunning took the mound for the Frigates, 14-8, 4.55 and Toothpick Sam Jones for the Black
Cats, 17-5, 3.01. The Frigates opened the game with Eddie Yost singling to LF, Bruton struck
out, Anderson grounded to 3B, but Yost went to 2B. SS Groat, booted a rountine grounder allowing
Gale Harris to reach and Yost to get to 3B. Frank Bolling then singled to RF, Yost scored but
Harris was gunned down by Jensen at 3B to end the inning, Frigates 1-0.
Both pitchers cruised until the bottom of the 4th when the Black Cats broke through. Runnels
opened with a single to RF, Minoso singles to LF, Jensen singled to RF with Runnels scoring,
1-1 and Minoso to 3B. Vernon grounded to 2B forcing Jensen, but Minoso scored, 2-1. Ed Bailey
singled to LF, Vernon goes to 3B. Groat grounds out to 2B, Vernon scores, 3-1 and Malzone grounded
out to end the inning. Black Cats up 3-1.
In the 7th for the Black Cats, Groat grounded out, Malzone doubled to RCF, Tito Francona hit for
Sam Jones and flied to deep RF with Malzone advancing to 3B. Mayer replaced Bunning to face Ashburn
and he singles to RCF and Malzone scored, 4-1. Runnels was HBP, Al Cicotte replaced Mayer. Minoso
reached on an infield hit to load the bases, but Jensen grounded out to SS to end the inning, Black
Cats 4-1.
Gerry Staley replaced Jones who had struck out 9 and gave up one unearned run. He was promptly greeted
by PH’er Lary Doby’s long HR to RCF. But retired the side in order after that, 4-2.
No one reached base for the remaining 6 PA’s, Black Cats tie the series, 1-1 with a 4-2 win.

WORLD SERIES GAME 3
GAME 3 The series moved to Briggs Stadium in Frankfort. The weather was a pleasant, fall 58
degrees with a 7 MPH breeze blowing right to left. Curt Simmons got the nod for the Black Cats,
9-5, 4.07 against Johnny Antonelli, 17-9, 3.45. In the top of the 2nd inning, Jackie Jensen led
off hitting the first pitch deep down the LF line for an HR, 1-0, Black Cats. Simmons cruised into
the 3rd inning when with two out, Randy Jackson got an infield hit to 2B, then went went to 2B on
an infield single to 3B by Joe Taylor before Pete Whisenant struck out.
In the 5th, Crandall hit the first pitch from Antonelli for a long HR to LF, 2-0. In the top of
the 7th, Minoso was hit by the first pitch of the inning by Antonelli and Jensen deposited a 1-0
pitch deep down the LF line for his 2nd HR of the game, 4-0. Crandall was HBP, but cooler heads
prevailed. Adcock grounded to SS but Crandall moved to 2B. Malzone grounded to 2B and Crandall
advanced to 3B. Billy Hunter then laced a single to RCF scoring Crandall, 5-0 before Simmons lined
out to LF.
In the bottom of the 7th the bats woke up for the Frigates. Howard lined a single to right, Repulski
was HBP, Gale Harris walked to load the bases. Ryan called upon the veteran Dick Donovan to make a
relief appearance. Frank Bolling grounded to 2B, forcing Harris at 2B as Howard scored. With runners
on 1st and 3rd Plunkitt PH Lary Doby, but Donovan induced an inning ending DP to 2B, 5-1.
Donovan retired the remaining 6 batters he faced and earned a 3 inning save, Black Cats 5-1 and take
a 2-1 series advantage.

GAME 4 The Black Cats send veteran Bob Friend back to the mound but this time he is facing
the Frigates outstanding pitcher, Jack Harshman, 18-7, 3.15 who had been almost unhittable
down the stretch. The Black Cats are hoping to take a 3-1 lead in the series, especially since
they led the league in hitting against LHP for the seaon.
Both pitchers were nearly perfect through the first 7 innings with Harshman only allowing a
single to Groat in the 3rd, his first hit of the series. Friend had allowed only 4 singles.
In the top of the 8th, Harshman fanned the first two batters, Malzone and Groat, but Ryan PH
for Friend with Essegian, who walked. Ashburn though grounded out to end the inning. But in
the bottom of the 8th, the Black Cats went to reliever Bill Henry, 5-1-4, 1.55, but the Creator
countered with PH’er Joe Taylor for Billy Bruton, who homered right down the LF line on the first
pitch he saw, 1-0. Anderson then struckout, Pete Whisenant though tripled to deep RCF shooting
the ball past Jensen. Howard PH for Harris, but Ryan intentionally walked him. Billy Hoeft PR for
Howard and Henry was replaced by closer Roy Face, Frank Bolling greeted him with a solid single
to LF, Whisenant scored, 2-0, Hoeft to 2B. Red Wilson popped out and PH’er Gus Bell flied out.
That was plenty for Harshman who completed the CG shutout striking out both Vernon and Minoso
before Jensen routinely flied to right, Frigates, 2-0, series tied 2-2. Harshman gave up only
the 1 hit in the 3rd, struck out 7 and walked 4.

SPB60-1958 WORLD SERIES GAME 5
GAME 5 Pivotal game 5 would occur at Frankfort with Sam Jones on the mound for the Black Cats
and Billy Pierce taking the mound for the Frigates. Both had been sharp in their previous appearances.
The Frigates opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Harris singled, Bolling field out, Gus
Bell singles to left with Harris stopping at 2B. The pesky SS, Joe DaMaestri, then singled to RCF
plating Harris and Bell going to 3B. 1-0. Howard grounded back to the mound, Bell holding at 3B and
DeMaestri moving to 2B. Pierce struck out.
In the 5th, Jones struckout, Ashburn grounded out, but Vernon singled to right, Jensen just missed
a HR, but doubled off the LF wall scoring Vernon and going to 3B as Harry Anderson booted the ball
in LF. Minoso failed to capitalize by gounding out to 2B, 1-1.
The Frigates though wasted no time coming back. DeMaestri flied to RF, Howard singled, Pierce struck
out, but Yost singled Howard to 2B, Bruton singled to RF scoring Howard and sending Yost to 3B, 2-1.
Anderson making up for his earlier error, lashed a long double to LCF scoring both Yost and Bruton,
4-1, Bowsfield replaced Jones and Harris struck out.
In the top of the 6th Crandall lined out to SS, Runnels walked, Groat grounded to 2B forcing Runnels,
Malzone singled to RF, Groat to 2B. Adcock was called on by Ryan to PH for Bowsfield. Inexplicably,
Groat is picked off 2B before Adcock can swing the bat.
Henry entered the game in the bottom of the 7th for the Black Cats. Howard singled to LF, Pierce
struckout on a bunted 3rd strike, Wilson PR for Howard. Yost reaches on an error on 3B Malzone,
Wilson to 2nd. Taylor PH and bounces out to 3B, both runners advancing. Whisenant PH, but is walked
intentionally to load the bases. Donovan is called in from the pen for the Black Cats. He gets a
grounder to 3B Malzone, who boots another one, plating Wilson, 5-1. Finally Bolling flies out to CF.
In the top of the 8th, Jesnen gounds out to SS, Minoso singles to RF, Crandall singles to RCF with
Minoso to 3B. Runnels grounds to 3B, Minoso scoring, Crandall to 2B, 5-2. Groat flies to RF.
That ended the scoring and the Frigates take a commanding 3-2 lead as the teams travel back to
Beard for game 6.

GAME 6 The Black Cats return home with their backs to the wall, they call on Curt Simmons and
the Frigates again send Jim Bunning to the mound. The Black Cats strike first in the bottom on
the 1B. Runnels grounds out, but 40-year old 1B, Mickey Vernon homers deep to RCF, 1-0. Jensen
grounds out, Cradall flies out. 1-0
Both pitchers are rolling along till the top of the 5th. Bolling flies out to LF, DeMaestri reached
on an error by C Crandall, Bunning disdaining the bunt, rifles a 2B to deep left center and DeMaestri
scores, 1-1. Randy Jackson singles to left and Bunning scores, 2-1. Jones is replaced by the 41 year
old Virgil Trucks. Wilson pops out, PH’er Doby walks and Anderson, PHing grounds to SS. 2-1 Frigates

WORLD SERIES GAME 7
GAME 7 So after 160 games for these two teams it all comes down to game 161 for all the
marbles. Johnny Antonelli takes the mound for the Frigates and Bob Friend takes the mound
for his 3rd start of the series. Both pitchers are 0-1. The Black Cats move rookie Chuck
Essegian into CF to replace, Richie Ashburn who hit .357 for the season but was 2/21 through
the first 6 games and infielder Billy Hunter at SS for Dick Groat who hit nearly .400 in the
regular season against LHP, but was 2/23 in the series.
The Black Cats tried to crack the scoring in the bottom of the 1st after Friend retired the
side in the top of the inning. Runnels walked, Vernon struck out, Jensen popped to 2B, Minoso
walked, Runnels to 2B. Crandall singles to shallow left but Runnels was thrown out at the plate,
to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd Essegian hit the first pitch he saw from Antonelli for a HR, 1-0. Hunter,
Malzone and Friend all made outs. 1-0 Black Cats
Not to be denied, the Frigates opened the top of the 3rd as Veal is HBP, Antonelli grounded a single
up the middle and Veal advanced to 3B. Yost brought in Veal with a SF to left, 1-1. Bruton walked,
Anderson walked to load the bases, but Friend induced a 4-4-3 DP from Howard. 1-1
Both pitchers worked hard through both lineups till the bottom of the 5th. Friend led off striking
out, Runnels walked, Vernon walked and the Creator brought in ace closer Dick Hyde to face Jensen
who grounded out to 1B, runners advancing to 2B and 3B. Minoso was then walked intentionally to face
Crandall. Crandall singled to LCF to score Runnels and Vernon and send Minoso to 3rd. 3-1 Essegian
struck out to end the inning.
Top of the 6th, Howard singles, but Doby grounds into a DP, Bolling grounded to 2B as Friend
continued in control.
In the bottom of the 6th, Wagner PH and flied to RF, Malzone homered to deep LF, Friend grounded
to SS, Runnels singles and Vernon flied out. 4-1
In the bottom of the 7th, Plunkitt brought in Harshman in relief. He had been virtually unhittable
in his start. Jensen greeted him with a single, Minoso walked, Crandall was HBP to load the bases
with no outs. Ashburn who had come in for defensive purposed singled up the middle and both Jensen
and Minoso scored, Crandall stopping at 2B, 6-1. Groat grounded to 3B forcing Ashburn. Malzone
grounded into a 1-4-3 DP. Black Cats 6-1
Friend retired the side in order in the top of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th, Friend opens the inning with a BB, Runnels walks and Elston relieves Harshman.
Vernon singles to load the bases. Jensen grounds to Bolling at 2B, but he boots it for an error,
Friend scores, 7-1. Minoso then doubles down the 3B line scoring Runnels and Vernon with Jensen
stopping at 3B. 9-1 Crandall lines a single to RF and both Jensen and Minoso score, 11-1 Hoeft
replaces Elston. Ashburn grounds to SS and Crandall goes to 2B. Groat singles with Crandall
stopping at 3B. Malzone then singles up the middle scoring Crandall, Groat to 2B, 12-1. Friend
batting for the 2nd time in the inning grounds into a 4-6-3 DP to end the carnage, Black Cats
take a commanding 12-1 lead to the 9th.
Friend going for the CG gets Howard to fly out to RF, Doby to ground out to SS and Bolling to pop
out to the catcher and seal the victory and the 1958 World Series for the Beard Black Cats throwing
just 102 pitches.
The Series MVP was RF’er Jackie Jensen for the Black Cats who hit .348, going 8/23 with 2 2B’s,
3 HR’s and 6 BB’s 6 RBI and an OF assist. He closely edged C Del Crandall, who hit .381, 8/21, 2B,
2 HR’s, 7 RBI.
