SPB60-1961 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
The journey to the 1961 SPB-60 World Series for the Louisiana Lightning and New York Mets was very different.
While Mike See’s 97-win Lightning coasted to the National League title by 12 games, Don Rahn’s Mets spent the
entire season in a battle with the record-setting Joliet Jakes. In the end the Mets superior pitching staff
outlasted the Jakes potent offense. The Mets won 114 games and took the American League by a mere 2 games.
Game 1 at New York
Louisiana’s Don Drysdale (13-9) faced New York’s Dick Donovan (16-3)
Donovan was brilliant right from the start, allowing only one harmless baserunner through the first 6 innings.
Wally Moon gave Met Ace all the run support he would need with a 2-run homer with none out in the bottom of the 4th.
Donovan himself picked up an RBI in the same inning with a sac bunt. Norm Cash gave the Lightning some life with a
1-out double in the top of the 7th and Roberto Clemente followed with a single, moving Cash to 3rd. Cash would score
on a Billy Williams groundout, but Donovan would get out of the jam. Donovan would pitch another 1-2-3 inning in the
8th and the Mets would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. After Vada Pinson singled to lead off
the 9th, Donovan forced a double play and then retired Cash for the final out.
Mets win 4-1.
The Mets take a 1-0 series lead behind Donovan who finished with a 4-hit, 0-BB complete game.

Game 2 at New York
Louisiana’s Jim Kaat (19-3) versus the Mets Don Cardwell (19-6) in a matchup of the two League ERA leaders.
After Cardwell set the Lightning down 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st the Mets quickly loaded the
bases in the bottom half of the inning, setting up a John Romano grand slam. After the Lightning
made it a 4-1 game when Roberto Clemente homered to lead off the top of the 2nd no more runs were
scored until the Mets erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th and never looked back.
Mets improve to 2-0 with an 11-3 victory

The Mets sent Ken Johnson (6-0) to face Louisiana’s Bob Gibson (13-7)
The score was tied at 2-2 after three innings as the Lightning scratched out a run in each
the 2nd and 3rd innings while the Mets got back-to-back 2-out solo shots from Frank Robinson
and Ken Boyer. Norm Cash tripled with one out in the bottom of the 5th and scored the game’s
final run on a Roberto Clemente single. Gibson finished allowing only 5 hits over 8 innings of
work. The Lightning outhit the Mets 11-5.
Lightning avoid disaster and the series is now Mets 2-1

The Mets send Lew Burdette (15-9) to face Lightning game 1 starting pitcher Don Drysdale.
Jim Gentile touches Drysdale with a 2-run shot in the top of the 1st. Louisiana pulled to within
a run on a 3rd inning RBI single by Billy Williams. Frank Robinson made it a 4-1 game with a 2-run
homer in the 7th. Billy Williams doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning. However, the
Mets put it away with three in the 9th including 2 on a Boyer home run.
Mets take a 3-1 series lead with a 7-2 victory.

all singles. Clete Boyer singled to lead off the Lightning 3rd, reach 2B on a Kaat sac bunt
and scored the games only run on a Luis Aparicio RBI single. Kaat (1-1) picks up the win with
7.2 innings of 3-hit, 8-k ball. Donovan (1-1) suffers a tough loss with 7 innings of 4-hit,

SPB60-1961 WORLD SERIES GAME 6
Game 6 at New York
Gibson (1-0) at Cardwell (1-0)
Lightning jump out to a 3-0 lead on a 1st inning 3-run jack by Clemente. Norm Cash and Billy Williams
make it a 5-1 game with 6th inning solo homers, knocking Cardwell out of the game. However, Jim Gentile
led of the bottom of the 6th with a walk. Wally Moon followed with a single and John Romano doubled them
both home. The Mets then pulled to within a run on a Jerry Lumpe RBI double. Frank Robinson led off the
bottom of the 7th with a game-tying homer. Met reliever Johnny Podres was tough. After allowing the first
batter he faced in the 6th to reach on an error, Podres retired the final 11 batters he faced in the game
in the 6th through 9th innings. Ken Hunt led off the bottom of the 9th with a double and Frank Robinson
was intentionally walked. Turned out to be a brilliant move as Ken Boyer grounded into a DP. However,
after Averill was walked intentionally to set up a lefty-lefty matchup Ferrarese walked Gentile to load
the bases. The Mets couldn’t pull it off as Wally Moon lined out. Hoeft came in to pitch for the Mets
in the top of the 10th and gave up a leadoff double to Johnson. However, the next three batters were retired
and Johnson was stranded on 3rd.
The game went to the bottom of the 10th where Sherry walked slow-footed John Romano to lead off. Mets pinch
ran Walters . After Lumpe struck out Sherry walked pinch hitter Bob Skinner, but then struck out Hunt.
It looked like the Mets were going to fail once again to plate the series winning run. However, on Stan
Williams first pitch Frank Robinson singled home the game winner. Mets 6-5 in 10 innings.
While the Mets take the series 4-2, it came very close to going to a 7th game.
While pitching and defense was the difference in this series, Frank Robinson takes MVP honors with 3
homers, 7 runs scored and 7 RBI. John Romano and Jerry Lumpe were also considered.
Like the regular season, the difference was the cumulative pitching dominance of the Mets. As a team the
Mets had an ERA of 2.38 and 1.04 WHIP compared to the Lightning’s 4.61 and 1.46. Moreso – in the 6 games
the Mets pitchers allowed only 8 walks while forcing 9 double plays compared to 27 and 3 for Louisiana.
Mike and I had a great time as we spent three hours on the phone while playing the games and reminiscing
about SPB history, covid, work and life in general. I feel very fortunate to beat one of the most
successful owners in SPB history.
I am looking forward to the upcoming season, starting with the Expansion Draft.
