Game 1 at Newark (Polo Grounds)
Mets struck first in the top of the 2nd when Jerry Lumpe, not known for his power, hit a 2-out solo shot. Mets
go a 3-run jack from Ron Fairly in the 4-run 2nd. Lew Burdette was cruising for the visitors and allowed only 1
hit and no walks over 4 innings pitched when the skies opened up in the top of the 5th and Burdette was not able
to continue. Mets made it 7-0 on aa 2-run shot by Lumpe, his 2nd homer of the day.
The Bears potent offense came alive in the bottom of the 7th on back-to-back 2-out solo home runs by Willie Mays
and Pete Ward. Mets bullpen struggled again in the bottom of the 7th as Boog Powell delivered a 2-out RBI single
and Willie Mays followed with a 3-run homer to pull to 7-6. Ron Fairly led of the top of the 9th for the Mets with
his 2nd homer of the day, giving the Mets an insurance run. Turns out that run was critical.
Mets win the opener 8-7 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2 at Newark (Polo Grounds)
Mets use the long ball again as Ron Fairly blast a 3-run shot in the top of the 1st with none out, his 3rd
homer of the series so far. For the second game in a row the Mets lose their SP due to a long rain delay as
Don Cardwell is sidelined with a 3-0 lead with 1.2 IP. Bear SP Robin Roberts was able to continue. Mets
reliever Ron Kline stepped up and retired the first 11 batters he faced. He even survived anther rain delay.
Boog Powell led off the bottom of the 7th with a home run off of Kline. Kline retired the next three and
finished with 5.1 innings of work, allowing 2 hits and no walks. Ken Boyer homered to lead of the top of
the 8th for the Mets, giving them a 4-1 lead.
Bob Anderson took the mound for the Mets in the bottom of the 8th and promptly gives up a leadoff homer to
Bob Rodgers before finishing the inning w/o allowing another run. Mets make it a 6-2 game by scoring 2 in
the top of the 9th on a double play ball and a Tim McCarver RBI single.
Bob Anderson stayed in the game for the Mets in the bottom of the 9th and quickly retired sluggers Boog Powell
and Willie Mays. However, Anderson hit Pete Ward with a pitch, gave up a pinch hit double to Merritt Ranew and
then surrenders a 3-run homer to pinch hitter Woody Held. Anderson then finished of the inning by getting Bernie
Allen to line out.
Another close win for the Mets and tough loss for the Bears who got themselves into a hole early in both games.
Mets take a 2-0 series lead with a 6-5 win.

More of the same that we saw in the first two games as the Mets jump out to a 4-0 lead behind a pair of 2-run
home runs. Tim McCarver in the 1st inning and Roy McMillan in the 2nd. Hank Aaron makes it 4-1 with a solo shot
in the top of the 3rd , however the Mets get the run back on a McMillan RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mets add a run in the 4th and 6th and then 2 in the 7th while Whitey Ford was cruising with a 9-1 lead.
Willie Tasby and Woody Held knock Ford out of the game as they each touched him with a solo homer in the top of
the 8th. Ford was removed for Dick Fowler who retired the final out in the 8th. The Bears scored two more off
of Fowler in the bottom of the 9th but it wasn’t enough as the Mets take a commanding 3-0 series lead
with a 9-5 win.

Game 4 at New York (Metropolitan Stadium)
Bears draw first blood this time as they take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Willie Mays sac fly RBI
and a Dees RBI single. That was short lived as McCarver singled home a paid and Lumpe followed with a RBI double.
The Bears were fortunate that more runs weren’t scored as Boog Powell through McCarver out at the plate on the Lumpe
double to end the inning. The Mets almost had a run in the bottom of the 2nd however Boog Powell through Willie
Davis out at the plate trying to score on a Frank Robinson double.
Powell then ties the game at 3-3 in the top of the 5th with a solo shot.
The Bears took a 5-3 lead in the top of the 6th on a Ranew RBI single and a run scored on a FC.
Mets made it 5-4 in the bottom half of the 6th on a Lumpe RBI single. However, the Bears take a 7-4 on a pair
of sac fly RBI’s in the top of the 7th.
The Mets offense comes alive again using the long ball in the bottom of the 7th as Frank Robinson hit a 1-out
solo shot and followed 2 batters later with a 2-run blast. Zoilo Versalles singles home a 4th run of the inning
as the Mets take a 8-7 lead. The Mets add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th as Leon Wagner singles to left
with 2-out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. It could have been a bigger inning if Boog Powell hadn’t thrown out his 3rd
runner of the game at home plate!!
Ron Kline sets the Bears down in order in the top of the 9th to earn his 2nd save of the series in a 9-7 win.
Hard to believe this series was a 4-0 sweep as all but one was a nail biter. Each time the Bears put themselves
in an early hole. Mets got some timely hitting and as Joe put it in the chat – the Mets pitching was superior and
the Bears bullpen struggled. Mets had a .324 batting average and a .989 OPS. Compared to the Bears .252 / .778. Lots of home runs for a 4-game series. Each team had 10.
MVP of the series was close as any of Lumpe, Fairly, Boyer or McCarver could win it. We will give it to underdog
Jerry Lumpe who batted .467 with a 1.489 OPS and set the tone with a big 2-homer game 1. Honorable mention to Newark’s
Boog Powell who batted .385 with a couple of homers and 3 runners thrown out at the plate in one game.
