SPB60-1965 A.L. Championship Series Series GAME 1
Bears Take Game 1 of League Championship Series Behind McDowell, Early Power
Game 1 – November 8, 1965 | Shea Stadium
Bears 8, Frigates 1
Bears lead series, 1–0
The Bears opened the League Championship Series in emphatic fashion Monday night at Shea Stadium,
using early power and a dominant pitching performance from Sam McDowell to claim an 8–1 victory over
the Frigates in Game 1.
The Bears seized control immediately in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Willie Mays
blasted a solo home run to deep right-center to give the Bears the lead. An error by the Frigates
shortstop and a passed ball kept the inning alive, and Pete Ward followed with a sharp single up
the middle to score another run and make it 2–0.
McDowell took it from there. The Bears’ ace was overpowering, allowing just one hit across eight
innings while striking out nine. Though he issued seven walks, McDowell consistently pitched out
of trouble, stranding eight Frigates runners and not allowing an earned run.
The Bears extended their advantage in the third when Wayne Causey doubled and scored on a line-drive
single by Mays, who finished the night with three RBIs. Another unearned run crossed in the fourth
after a second Frigates error, with Bob Rodgers driving in Woodie Held to push the lead to 4–0.
After seven scoreless frames by the Frigates, their lone run finally came in the eighth. A walk,
passed ball, catcher’s interference, and a wild pitch allowed Roberto Peña to score without the
benefit of a hit, trimming the margin to 5–1.
Any hope of a rally was quickly extinguished in the bottom of the eighth. The Bears erupted for
three runs, highlighted by Held’s two-run home run to deep left, restoring the commanding lead
and putting the game out of reach. Dave McNally worked a clean ninth to close out the
series-opening win.

SPB60-1965 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
Culp Dominates as Frigates Even Championship Series in Game 2
Game 2 – November 9, 1965 | Shea Stadium
Frigates 2, Bears 0
Series tied, 1–1
The Frigates responded in championship-caliber fashion Tuesday night, riding a brilliant complete-game
shutout from Ray Culp to defeat the Bears 2–0 in Game 2 of the League Championship Series and even the
series at one game apiece.
The Frigates struck quickly in the top of the second inning, delivering all the offense they would need.
Tony Conigliaro led off the inning by driving a pitch deep to left-center for a solo home run. One batter
later, Gates Brown followed with another long ball to right-center, giving the Frigates a 2–0 lead.
From there, Culp was in complete control. The right-hander scattered four hits over nine shutout innings,
walked two, and struck out four. He induced a key double play in the third inning and repeatedly shut down
Bears threats before they could develop, never allowing a runner to score.
Bears starter Denny McLain was nearly as sharp, also going the distance. McLain allowed just four hits and
two runs, both coming on the back-to-back home runs in the second, but received no run support as the Bears
were unable to solve Culp’s steady mix of pitches.
The Bears mounted their best chance in the eighth inning when a walk and a single put runners on, but Culp
calmly forced consecutive groundouts to escape the jam. He then retired the side in order in the ninth to
seal the shutout and square the championship series.
With the split at Shea Stadium, the League Championship Series moves forward deadlocked, setting the stage
for a decisive middle stretch as both clubs vie for the league title.

SPB60-1961 WORLD SERIES GAME 3
Game Three - Frigates 5 Bears 3.
WP - Fred Newman (1-0) SV - Pedro Ramos (1) LP - Marcelino Lopez (0-1).
HR - Willie Mays 2 (3) Bobby Knoop (1).
In the opening frame, a walk to Wayne Causey, was followed by a 2 run bomb from Wonderful Willie
off Newman to put the Bears out front. Lopez shutout out the Frigates through the first 3 innings.
But that all changed in the 4th, when the Frigates exploded for all 5 of their runs. Lopez walked
Ellie Howard to start the inning. Then he struck out Hawk Harrelson. But Sam Bowens came through
with a triple that made the game 2-1 when Howard scored. Bob Allison then doubled in Bowens, tying
the game at 2. Obviously a bit shaken, Lopez threw a wild pitch and Allison hustled into 3rd.
Frank Malzone then singled in Allison, putting the Frigates out front, with what proved to be the
winning hit. Lopez got out # 2 when Bobby Pena flew out to right. Then Bobby Knoop, provided the
icing on the cake with a 2 run shot, that sent Lopez to an early shower. Johnny Klippstein entered
and got Richie Allen to pop up ending the rally. Newman kept the Bears in check heading into the
9th inning with that 5-2 lead. Klippstein and Roger Craig kept the Frigates in check as well, with
Roger throwing 3 innings of 1 hit shutout relief. Mays led off the 9th, and hit his 2nd HR of the
game, and Newark fans came to life. Boog Powell grounded out, and Pete Ward followed with a single
bringing up the tying run. Enter Ramos, the Frigates closer. Jim French steps up as a PH for SS
Dick Groat. He hit a hard grounder to Knoop and Bobby grabbed it, tossed it to Dick Howser, and
Howser threw quickly to first for the game ending DP.
Frankfort fans went absolutely bonkers, as the surprising Frigates take a 2-1 lead in this series.
The next game will see Ray Washburn going for Frankfort, taking on Robin Roberts, the old pro, for
Newark. Should be a good one, stay tuned!

SPB60-1965 A.L. Championship Series Series GAME 4
Game Four - Robin Roberts & Ray Washburn match up, and there is no score through the opening two
innings, although they are not smooth outings, especially for Washburn who twice got out of trouble.
Starting the 3rd inning, Hank Aaron hits a lead off double, then takes 3rd on a deep fly out by Wayne Causey.
Mays was given an intentional pass. Boog Powell works a walk that loads the bags, as Washburn continues
to struggle with his control. Pete Ward then hits a deep fly to center, and in comes Aaron, while Mays
takes 3rd. Two outs now, and Dick Groat walks, loading the sacks once again, but Washburn gets Johnny
Lewis to ground out, allowing Ray to escape a nasty inning with just 1 run scoring. Frankfort begins
their half of the third with Dick Howser picking up a lead off walk. Chico Salmon up, and the manager
flashes the hit & run sign. Salmon gets hold of a Roberts curve, and hits a screaming drive into LF,
and the speedy Howser scores the tying run,,and Salmon takes 3rd on a bad throw home from relay man
Dick Groat. Jim King then grounds out to second, sending Salmon home on the play, and giving the Frigates
a 2-1 lead. Richie Allen pops up, 2nd out. Tony Conigliaro singles, and Gates Brown singles, with Tony
stopping at 2nd. Roberts then ends the inning, as Joe Pepitone grounds out. But the Frigates take a 2-1 lead.
Newark sees Washburn strike out Woodie Held to start the 4th. Then Washburn walks catcher Bob Rodgers, his
6th walk of the game. Washburn strikes out Aaron for # 2. But Wayne Causey singles, and up steps Mays.
Manager Plunkitt has seen enough as he stalks out to the mound, signaling Jim Dickson into the game.
Washburn, though he gave up just 1 run, had not only walked 6, but also given up 4 hits to this point.
Dickson works carefully to the very dangerous Mays, and the count goes full. Then Mays swings and send a
little pop fly toward first that Pepi hauls in to end the threat. Dickson holds the game through the sixth,
and Roberts settles in not allowing the Frigates to score any more through the 7th. LH Frank Carpin replaces
Dickson for the 7th inning, and holds the 2-1 lead. Newark comes up for the 8th. Joe Adcock pinch hits for
Ward, and starts the inning with a base hit. Jim Coates takes over for Carpin, and Groat lays down a nice
bunt that puts Adcock in scoring position. Dave Boswell takes over for Coates, and Johnny Lewis draws a
walk, putting two men on for the Bears. Plunkitt then calls in Pedro Ramos, hoping the Cuban closer can
shut down the threat. But Woodie Held singles loading the bases. Then light hitting catcher Bob Rodgers
lines a single through the infield, and 2 runs score, giving the Bears a 3-2 lead! Hank Aaron makes it 4-2
when he follows with another hit that scores Held, and Rodgers hustles his way to 3rd. Causey hits a
grounder to 3rd, and Allen grabs it and his hard throw home nails Rodgers at the plate.
Up steps Mays. But Ramos works a full count, then sets Willie down on a called strike!
Still, Ramos is very aware that he failed to stop the rally and the Bears come into the bottom of the
8th with a 4-2 lead. Roberts retires the first batter. Then Richie Allen beats out an infield grounder
for a hit, and Tony C. follows with another base hit up the middle, while Allen holds at 2nd. Roberts
strikes out Gates. But Pepi slices a double down the first base line with Allen scoring, and Tony C.
coming around 3rd, testing the strong arm of Aaron, who gets the ball quickly to Held at 2nd. Held throws
a bullet home and Tony is out at plate, ending the inning with the score now 4-3, Newark. Ramos quickly sets
down the Bears in the 9th. Stu Miller the king of the slow ball, and many other quirky pitches, is the Bears closer.
He comes in for the save, of which he had 35 during the year. Bobby Knoop steps in to face the crafty Miller.
Stu works the count to 1-1, and throws a dinky curve, and Knoop hits it deep into the LF seats tying the game,
stunning the Bears, and Miller, while the Frankfort fans go wild on Knoop's 2nd circuit shot of this series!!
Miller regains his composure and quickly retires 3 straight sending the game to extra innings. Both Ramos and
Miller put up 1-2-3 innings in the 10th. Newark's Aaron coaxes a walk off Ramos to open the 11th. And with
over 40 pitches thrown by Pedro, manager Plunkitt relieves him with Lindy McDaniel. But Lindy looses Causey
to a walk, and up steps Mays with runners at 1st & 2nd, no outs. Unbelievably Mays bunts, but it is right to
McDaniel, and Lindy, smart guy that he is, throws to 3rd nailing Aaron for the first out. Newark fans are upset
with that play, no doubt about it, and everyone in the park is stunned! Boog Powell then singles through
short & 3rd loading the sacks. But McDaniel, cool as a cucumber, goes about his business, buckles down, and
gets both Adcock and Groat on pop ups, and the home fans quit holding their breath. Some classy pitching there
by Lindy when the chips were down! Miller then hits Gates with a pitch, to start the 11th. Gates then tries to
swipe 2nd, and is gunned down on a pick off throw from Miller that sees Powells accurate throw to 2nd nail Brown
easily. Stu then sets down the next two men, and into the 12th we roll. McDaniel walks Johnny Lewis,
strikes out Held, and induces a DP ball that ends the top of the 12th. Miller steps in for another inning
of relief, and John Orsino bats for catcher Howard, who has been held hit-less this game. Miller ends up
walking Orsino. With Dick Howser now up, the hit & run is called and Dick grounds out to 3rd, and Orsino
takes 2nd. Hawk Harrelson then singles with the slow moving Orsino stopping at 3rd. Bob Allison steps up,
works the count to 1-1. On the next pitch, he sends a deep fly ball over Aaron's head that drops in for a
game winning walk off single. Frankfort fans are just totally surprised by yet a 3rd win in this series,
as are the Newark fans, and team. They still are getting on the manager for having Mays bunt back in 10th,
on a very controversial move.
The Frigates now have a stunning 3-1 lead over the much favored Bears team. And with one game left to
play in Frankfort, they are hoping to pull off another miracle series in Tiger Stadium. Can they do it?
Maybe, but if not the series will move back to Newark. Our next game will see Frankfort's Bill Monbouquette,
who lost the opener going against the fireballing, flame throwing, Sam McDowell who beat the Bears with a 1 hit,
9 K performance back in the opening game of this series. Monbo is hoping to have better stuff this time around.
And Sudden Sam is cool and confident.

SPB60-1965 A.L. Championship Series Series GAME 5
Game Five - With their backs against the wall, the Bears are once again throwing their ace pitcher,
Sudden Sam McDowell who totally dominated in the opener with a 1 hit 8-1 game featured with 9 strikeouts.
Facing him, once again is Bill Monbouquette, who lost that opener. The Bears start the first inning with
Hank Aaron getting a hit, and then stealing 2nd. Wayne Causey grounds out, and Aaron advances to 3rd.
Willie Mays strokes a single to left, Aaron scores and the Bears have the lead. Boog Powell grounds to SS,
but Roberto Pena bobbles it and there are two on. Monbo settles in striking out Pete Ward, then getting
Dick Groat to fly out. McDowell gives up a 2 out base hit to Richie Allen, then notches his 2nd whiff of
the inning by getting hot shot Tony C. swinging. LF Johnny Lewis leads off the 2nd inning against Monbo by
driving fastball deep into the right center seats to make it 2-0 Bears. Bill retires the next 3 hitters.
McDowell comes in for his 2nd inning, strikes out both Ellie Howard, and Jake Wood, who is getting a start
at firstbase today. Then Sam Bowens ground out. In the third inning, Monbo fare a bit better giving up a
one out single to Mays, then retiring the next 2 hitters. McDowell third has his 5th strikeout of Bob Allison,
a ground out by Frank Malzone, and his 6th K, this one of SS Pena. Monbo gets Groat to fly out in the 4th,
but up steps Johnny Lewis, and once again he hits the ball way over the RF fence for his 2nd HR of the game,
now it 3 to zip. Monbo quickly retires the next two men. Bobby Knoop greets McDowell with a single between
3rd and SS to start the bottom of the 4th. Richie Allen singles sending Knoop to 3rd. Tony C. hits a solid
line drive to RF that is hauled down, but Knoop plates the first run, now 3-1. Richie Allen takes off and steals
2nd. Ellie Howard then homers into the RF stands to tie the game. But McDowell picks up strikeouts 7 & 8 fanning
both Wood and Bowens. Monbo issues a one out walk in the 5th, but nothing comes of it. McDowell gets strike out # 9,
fanning Allison again to start the Frankfort 5th. Malzone then singles to shallow CF, and McDowell walks SS Pena,
his first free pass. Up comes Knoop once again, and he works the count full. Then unbelievably he cracks a fast
one right down the middle of the plate from McDowell well over the LF wall, and the home fans take a few seconds to
realize what just happend. Bobby Knoop has hit his 3rd circuit shot of the year in this series, this one a 3 run
blast, tying his HR production for the whole season when he split playing time with Frank Bolling, after being picked
up in a mid season trade from East Kenosha. WOW! Just way too much for the stunned McDowell, and he is relieved by
Johnny Klippstein. Richie steps in and hits a hard grounder right to the new pitcher, but Klippstein fumbles it badly,
and Richie gets all the way to second on the error. Klippstein gets Tony C for the 2nd out. But Elston Howard gets
a hit and Allen hustles in with another run, but Howard is cut down trying to stretch it at second. Now with 4 runs
in during the 5th, Frankfort takes a 7-3 lead, as the magic continues. Monbo issues another walk, but a sharp DP
gets him safely through the 6th. Klippstein takes down 3 straight in his half of the inning. On to the 7th we go.
Woodie Held catches a hanging curve from Monbouquette and sends it sailing into LF bleacher seats to make it 7-4.
Camilo Carreon comes on to bat for catcher Rodgers, and he hits a deep fly to RF, that is hauled in. Manager Plunkitt,
comes out to take the ball from Monbo, while turning the game over to Jim Coates, and Jim comes throught getting Aaron
and Causey on fly outs to CF New pitcher enters for the Bears 7th. It is LH Hank Aguirre. A walk to Malzone start
Hank's day, but he retires Pena on a fly out, then strikes out Knoop. Aguirre then tries to pick off Malzone at first,
but his throw bounces by the first baseman. No harm though when he strike out Allen to end the inning. Top of the
8th, Coates gets Mays, Powell, and Ward quickly, and the home fans are really getting antsy, with but one more go
around for the Bears. Aguirre starts the 8th getting Tony C. on a fly to LF. And then Ellie Howard doubles for his
3rd hit of the game. Speedy Dick Howser goes into run for Howard at 2nd. John Orsino pinch swings and hits a slow
grounder that ends up being an infield hit, while Howser takes 3rd. Bowens hits a short fly to CF for the 2nd out,
and Allison also flies to CF, and Aguirre breathes a sigh of relief. Last chance now for the Bears. Ken Hawk Harrelson
comes in at first, Howser takes over at SS for Pena, and Orsino is the new catcher. with Lindy McDaniel coming on for
the possible save, with the overworked Ramos resting. Groat files to CF, and Lindy wraps it up striking out both
Johnny Lewis and Held to end the game and send the surprising Frigates into the World Series for the A.L.
Hard to believe, but Frankfort took down the Mets, and Bears, who both had much better records on the year.
They await the winner of the NLCS, and are pretty charged up with their amazing post season play.
Bobby Knoop whose three HR's were all very important, and came over the last 3 games was unanimously
named Outstanding player of this series. Frankfort manager Plunkitt acknowledged they would not have won
without Bobby. And he gave Bears manager, Joe DeZarlo a tip of the hat on winning the season, with his
fine teams. Plunkitt knows his team has literally came out of nowhere with their post season play so far.
For this series the team stats showed Frankfort hitting only .213 with a .293 OBP, & a .372 slugging mark.
The Bears actually did slightly better, but not much, at .215, .292, & .378. In fielding Frankfort had a
.986 mark with 4 errors, and 6 DP's, while the Bears put up a .973 mark with 5 errors and only 1 DP.
Pitching marks for the Frigates showed a team E.R,A of 3.26 in 47 innings they allowed 37 hits, walked 19,
struck out 24, & gave up 7 HR's. The Bears were at 3.57 with 35 hits in 45.1 innings, 18 walks and 41
whiffs, while giving up six HR's. Attached are the scores and stats from all 5 games of the ALCS.
