SPB 2009 GC Quarters GAME 1
Game 1 of the Seasons Past Baseball 2009 Tim Johnson Memorial Grand Championship was held at
Shea Stadium. Game time temperature was a cool 50 degrees, with clear skies. The Redbirds
sent Pete Harnisch to the mound, and the Rats called on Tom Seaver.
The Rats jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning. After Dave May walked, Johnny Bench
jumped on the first pitch from Harnisch and homered to deep center. Joe Hague then followed
with a triple down the right field line. Bert Campaneris grounded out with the infield in, but
Seaver helped himself with a groundout to short, scoring Hague.
The Redbirds battled back into the game in the 4th inning. Barry Bonds reached on an error.
Mickey Tettleton walked. Then Rickey Henderson dropped a 3-run bomb down the left field line to
tie the score.
Both pitches settled down a bit until the bottom half of the 6th inning. May once again led off
an inning with a walk. Bench moved May to 2nd on a groundout. Then Hague pulled a home run deep
down the right field line to give the Rats a 5-3 lead.
Skip Guinn came in to relieve Seaver in the 8th inning, and got the side in order. Then Pete
Mikkelsen was brought in to close out the win in the 9th. With one out, Travis Fryman and Manuel
Lee hit back-to-back doubles to make the score 5-4. A groundout sent Lee to 3rd with two outs.
The ever-dangerous Tony Gwynn was intentionally walked. Tony Phillips then lined out to first to
end the game, Rats 5-4. Seaver got the win, Mikkelsen the save and Harnisch the loss.

SPB 2009 GC Quarters GAME 2
Game 2 of the Seasons Past Baseball 2009 Tim Johnson Memorial Grand Championship was held
at Shea Stadium. Game time temperature was an even cooler 47 degrees, with cloudy skies.
Frank Viola took the mound for the Redbirds, while the Rats gave the start to Gaylord Perry.
The Rats once again jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning. Johnny Bench reached on a
one-out error. With two outs, Dave May crushed a 2-run homer down the right field line. Perry,
meanwhile, was cruising along, and didn’t allow a hit until there was one out in the 5th inning.
Then the Redbirds mounted a small rally in the 6th inning. Ricky Henderson singled, and scampered
to 2nd base on Tony Phillips’ groundout. Barry Bonds walked. Mickey Tettleton then lined a single
to right center, scoring Henderson to make the score 2-1.
Frank Viola was pitching a superb game, allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk (with 2 unearned runs) in 6
innings, but the Redbirds had to try to get their offense going so he was pulled for a pinch hitter
in the 7th inning.
With the score still 2-1 Rats, Dave Burba cam in to pitch the 7th inning for the Redbirds. Tony Perez
greeted him with a single, and Johnny Bench pulled a 2-run homer deep to left field for a 4-1 lead.
The Rats added 2 more runs in the 8th inning against Paul Assenmacher and Mike Jackson. Lou Brock
hit a home run to right. After Ron Theobald walked, Jackson was brought in to pitch. Amos Otis grounded
out, sending Theobald to 2nd. Perez hit a single that sent Theobald to 3rd. Bench drove Theobald home
with a force out for his 3rd RBI of the game and a 6-1 lead.
Bobby Bolin relieved Perry in the 9th inning. With two outs, Julio Franco lined a triple to deep right center.
Travis Fryman drove Franco home with a double to right center. Bolin collected himself and retired
Manual Lee on a groundout to first to end the game, Rats 6-2. Perry got the win, and Viola took a very
tough loss.

SPB 2009 GC Quarters GAME 3
Game 3 of the Seasons Past Baseball 2009 Tim Johnson Memorial Grand Championship moved to
Veterans Stadium. Game time temperature was a cool 50 degrees, with clear skies. George
Stone got the nod for the Rats, while the Redbirds countered with Wally Whitehurst.
The Rats again scored first, this time in the 1st inning. With two outs, Amos Otis walked.
Tony Perez hit a double to right center that plated Otis for a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning,
Dave May lead off with a walk. Johnny Bench singled to put men on 1st and 2nd. After Joe Hague
grounded out, Bert Campaneris scored May with a single. The Rats added to the lead in the 3rd inning.
Dick Green led off with an infield hit. With one out, Perez hit a double down the right field line,
with Green stopping at 3rd. Dave May grounded out to 2nd with the infield in. Johnny Bench singled
to left, scoring Green for a 3-0 lead.
In the 5th inning, Green led off with a triple down the right field line. Otis hit a groundout to
short that scored Green for a 4-0 lead.
The Redbirds got on the board in the 6th inning. Tony Phillips led off with a single. After Barry
Bonds struck out, Turner Ward tripled down the right field line, bringing home Phillips. Mickey Tettleton
then drove home Ward with a groundout to 2nd to make the score 4-2.
The Rats broke the game open with 3 runs in the 8th inning. With one out, May singled and Bench
walked. Joe Hague forced Bench at 2nd, sending May to third. With two outs, Campaneris drove home
May with a single. Stone then helped his own cause with a single that plated Hague. Lou Brock finished
the scoring with an RBI single down the left field line that scored Campaneris, giving the Rats a 7-2 lead.
Tom Hall came in to relieve Stone in the 9th inning. With two outs, Julio Franco gave the home crowd a
glimmer of hope with a single. Tony Gwynn was sent in to pinch hit for Melido Perez, but he dashed the
hopes of the fans with a fly out to left, ending the game, 7-2 Rats. Stone got the win and Whitehurst
took the loss.

SPB 2009 GC Quarters GAME 4
Game 4 of the Seasons Past Baseball 2009 Tim Johnson Memorial Grand Championship, played
at Veterans Stadium, was a rematch of Game 1, with the Rats’ Tom Seaver facing off against
the Redbirds’ Pete Harnisch. Game time temperature was a cool 50 degrees, with threatening
skies and an already wet field.
After two scoreless innings, Seaver led off the 3rd inning with a double. Then the skies
opened up, and the game was delayed 75 minutes. Harnisch was unable to continue, so Shane
Reynolds was brought in to pitch. After two outs, Amos Otis singled, sending Seaver to third.
Tony Perez pulled a home run deep to left to give the Rats a 3-0 lead.
A couple more scoreless innings, then the Rats added a run in the 6th inning. With one out,
Johnny Bench and Joe Hague walked. Bert Campaneris drove Bench home with a double to deep left,
Hague stopping at 3rd. At this point, Seaver was in a grove, allowing just a walk and striking
out 8 batters in the first 6 innings.
The Rats took a 6-0 lead in the 7th inning. Ron Theobald led off with a double. Otis lined out
and Perez struck out. Dave May walked, and Bench lined a single to load the bases. Hague then
drove home Theobald and May with a single to left center. In the bottom half of the 7th, Seaver
was a little shaky, walking two batters. However, he struck out three batters and still had a
no-hitter going after 7 innings.
Seaver retired the side in order in the 8th inning, and entered the 9th inning with the no-hitter
still intact. Tony Gwynn led off the 9th inning, and lined out to 2nd base. Rickey Henderson
then sent a 3-1 pitch to left center for a double that broke up the no-hitter with one out in
the 9th inning! Seaver really bore down after that and struck out Barry Bonds and Mickey
Tettleton to end the game, Rats 6-0. Seaver ended up with 1 hit, 3 walks and 14 strikeouts.
Seaver got his 2nd win of the series, while Harnisch took his 2nd loss.
