Managers,

As we begin to close the books on the inaugural season of SPB NOW,  I want to focus on the future of the league rather than what has been a season with a lot of growing pains.  However, I would be remiss if I did not comment on the glaring over usage of players by nearly every team in the league.  This is very disappointing because most of the SPB NOW managers are veterans of SPB and should know better.  You are all professional and responsible men,  capable of far better than what you have given to this league in its first season and I hope that future seasons will not be as prone to over usage as the current season has been.  Over use penalties are currently being calculated and will be applied to those in violation, with the exception being those managers who took over teams in mid-season.  Additionally, Gary Plunkitt will soon be announcing a major change of league policy regarding the overuse of players as well as teams entering the play offs with significant player over use.  Enough said!

We have added four (4) new managers to the league.  Please welcome:

Colby Whetstone colby.whetstone@att.net Colby will be taking over the former Lethbridge Merlins and has named his team the Burns Flat Bombers.

Steve McPherson stemac@dreamscape.com Steve will be taking over the former New York Knights and has named his team the Oneida Silver Sox.

Craig Korol ckorol@cox.net Craig will be taking over the former Louisville Centurions and has named his team the Doge City Marshal's

Don Swearingen dcswear@charter.net Don will be taking over the former Brookline Stars and has not yet announced a name for his team.

We still have one (1) open team, the Kenosha Eagles.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in this team, please let me know.

Next on my agenda, are e-mail addresses.  Please make sure that you have an e-mail address that can accept e-mail with attachments.  Several times during the season this created problems in getting managers both the monthly stat disk as well as individual manager profiles.  Many managers are moving the Yahoo.com for their e-mail service and we have noticed no problem relative to e-mail attachments.  Also, if you change your e-mail address please notify either myself, Richard Pearson, or John Turnbull.  This will insure that John can update the web page and mass mailing league e-mail links.

During the season, several teams were taken over by new managers.  If you would like to change your team name, please let us know as soon as possible and I will announce it to the league..  Again, John will update the web page with this new information as it is received.

Several have asked about the dispersal draft involving the Seattle and Toronto teams.  This draft will be conducted via e-mail and is scheduled to begin on Saturday October 9, 2004.  A schedule of proposed timeframes for your draft pick is shown below and an official version will be soon posted to the web site.  All times are based upon Eastern Time.  If this presents any problems to anyone speak up now!

Players eligible to be drafted are any player ending the season on the roster of Seattle or Toronto that is not currently of the roster of any existing SPB NOW team.  Players must also meet the SPB criteria for being drafted which is  25 at bats, 20 innings pitched, or 25 games played.  John Turnbull will be posting the official list of players eligible to be drafted shortly after the current MLB season has been completed.

"Unofficially", players who may not be drafted from Seattle are, Scott Spiezo, Jolbert Caberera, Ramon Santiago, Raul Inanez, Hiram Bochia, Miguel Olivo, Ron Villone. Those from Toronto are, frank Menechino, Chris Gomez, Greg Zaun, Ted Lilly, Kerry Ligtenberg, and Sean Douglass.  Again, this is an unofficial list.  Let me know if you see any errors.

The draft will be done using the "snake draft " format, which is 1-24 and then 24 to 1.  This order will repeat as many times as necessary to complete the draft.  If no manager is been named for the open team by draft day, the league president or his designee will make the pick.

With the addition of the Seattle and Toronto teams, both Skydome and Safeco Field will be allowed to enter the league as well.  I will be waiving the 2 year rule for park occupancy and allowing anyone to place a bid for one of these new parks.  Parks will be awarded in reverse order of finish of those teams that express interest..  Thus far, only Richard Pearson has bid on Safeco Field.  Let me know if you are interested.

There is a lot of information in this e-mail.  Please take the time to read it thoroughly and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Jim
