Virginia Terriers vs. Worcester Grays
SPB Now-2010 Schilling League Division Series GAME 1
For the second straight season, the Worcester Grays (110-52) and Fairfax Terriers (97-65) are
matched up in the Schilling Division opening round divisional series. Last year, the Grays won
a tough five game series 3 games to 2. Once again, this year looks like a pitcher’s series as both
teams rode strong starting pitching throughout the year.
Game 1: Grays (Cain 22-8) at Terriers (Wainwright 19-6)
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Terriers opened the scoring in the 2nd inning on a leadoff Daric
Barton HR. Later in the inning, Brian Roberts doubled and scored on a Wilson Valdez single to give
Fairfax an early 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, Adam Wainwright was easily working through the Grays lineup.
Through 7 innings, Wainwright had allowed 1 hit.
However in the 8th inning, Wainwright started tiring and the Grays got leadoff singles from Angel
Pagan and David Freese. Terriers’ manager Ron Peterson stuck with his ace and Wainwright responded
by getting pinch-hitter Seth Smith to hit into a double play and then Wainwright retired David Murphy
to keep the 2-0 score intact. Surprisingly, Wainwright was sent back out in the 9th inning instead
of 42 save closer Neftali Feliz. After retiring Troy Tulowitzki, Wainwright allowed a single to
Aubrey Huff but remained in the game. Wainwright once again responded by getting Brian McCann to
hit into a 6-4-3 DP to end the game. The Terriers take Game 1 by the 2-0 score as Adam Wainwright
was player of the game allowing 4 hits and 2 walks in pitching the complete game shutout.

Game 2: Grays (Kershaw 14-4) at Terriers (Greinke 16-8)
After a scoreless 1st inning, Worcester opened the scoring in the second inning as Angel Pagan
singled and then scored on a long HR to left by David Freese. The Terriers get on the scoreboard
in the 4th as Ronny Paulino singles in Hunter Pence who had doubled to start the inning. Then after
a Brooks Conrad single advanced Paulino to 2nd, Zack Greinke helps his own cause with a single scoring
Paulino and tying up the score at 2 runs apiece. In the 5th, Fairfax takes the lead. Stephen Drew
leads off the inning with a walk and then Pence advances him to 2nd on a single. Daric Barton then delivers
a double down the 1st base line scoring Drew while Pence trying to score is thrown out at home. However
Ronny Paulino follow with a bloop double scoring Barton and giving Fairfax a 4-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Zack Greinke settled down after the shaky 2nd inning. He worked out of a bases loaded jam in
the 5th inning and after retiring the Grays in the top of the 8th inning, Greinke and the Terriers still
held the 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Fairfax added two more runs on a Stephen Drew single scoring
Brian Roberts and Hunter Pence double scoring Drew. David Purcey and Michael Wuertz finished out the 9th
as Fairfax takes Game 2 6-2. Greinke is player of the game allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs in 8 innings.

Game 3: Terriers (Buchholz 14-6) at Grays (Johnson 13-6)
The Grays returned home needing a strong performance from Josh Johnson and he delivers as he holds
the Terriers scoreless until the 6th when Stephen Drew triples to right and Jon Jay lines a single
through the infield for Fairfax’s first run. However, the Terriers’ Clay Buchholz matches Johnson
as he holds the Grays scoreless through 5 innings. In the Grays’ 6th, a Dan Uggla single and Justin
Upton double tie the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless 7th inning, Worcester calls on their bullpen to hold the 1-1 score but they can’t
deliver. Fairfax pinch-hitter Delwyn Young greets reliever Matt Thornton with a single. Chris Young
follows that with a single and then after a Drew strikeout, Jay beats out a infield hit to load the bases.
Andrew Bailey is called in and he is greeted by a Hunter Pence single scoring 2 runs. Daric Barton and
Russell Martin follow with RBI singles and then after a Brian Roberts fielder’s choice scores another run,
Fairfax has a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Fairfax turns to its pen. Jeremy Affeldt allows the
first two Grays to reach and rookie Kenley Jansen is summoned. Jansen pitches a perfect two innings as
Fairfax wins the game 6-1 and takes the series in 3 games. Clay Buchholz is player of the game as he
pitches 7 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 walk and 1 run.
For the series, Daric Barton (5-13 with 3 RBI and 3 runs) is a strong candidate but the MVP goes to Adam
Wainwright who set the tone for the series with the Game 1 shutout.
A big congratulations to Hugh McElaney who was the class of the Schilling League during the year with 110
wins. Anything can happen in a short series and in this case, the Terriers showed that beating a
great team.
