SPB-X 1938 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
The American League champion Schenectady Blue Sox meet the National League champion Detroit Titans
in the 1938 SPB-X World Series. Detroit led both leagues in runs scored and Schenectady gave up
the fewest runs in both leagues, but the Blue Sox feature a fearsome top of the lineup- Harlond Clift,
Bobby Doerr, Bill Dickey and Jimmie Foxx. Detroit features two twenty game winners- Bill Lee (20-11, 3.13)
and SPB-X ERA leader Johnny VanderMeer (20-9, 2.38) and a balanced lineup. A close series is expected.
Game 1: Detroit (B. Lee) at Schenectady (H. Gumbert)
Two twenty game winners face off in the opener and a pitcher’s duel ensues. Harry Gumbert goes seven
strong innings for the Blue Sox, surrendering only a 4th inning sacrifice fly to Tommy Henrich but that
was enough to hand him a very tough loss. Lee was brilliant for the Titans, going 7.2 shutout innings
and Clyde Shoun and Jim Weaver made the run stand up as Detroit draws first blood in the series.

The bats came alive for both teams as the series moved to Detroit. It was a see-saw game
early until the Blue Sox scored four in the 5th inning to take a 7-2 lead. But the Titans
struck for five runs in the bottom of the 7th, three on an Arky Vaughan home run to take a
7-6 lead and looked to take command of the series. But backs against the wall, the Blue
Sox rallied and a Bobby Doerr two-run single gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

Game 4: Schenectady (Lohrman) at Detroit (B. Lee)
Detroit scores early in this one on a 2-R HR by Ernie Lombardi and two run-scoring singles by
Arky Vaughan and Bill Lee is cruising with a 4-1 lead after his dominant game one win. The
Blue Sox strike back though as Lou Finney bashes a 3-R homer to tie it in the fourth at 4.
The game moves to the 10th inning, now tied 5-5, and Detroit closer Jim Weaver on the mound.
His control abandons him and he walks three men sandwiched around a Bill Dickey single to force
in the lead run, and a Red Kress double and Finney sac fly make it 9-5. The Titans are able to
bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th, but a DP ends it. So far the road
teams have won all four games!
Final score: Schenectady 9, Detroit 6. W-R. Sewell, L-J Weaver, SV- Castleman.

Game 5: Schenectady (Gumbert) at Detroit (VanderMeer)
The series moves back to Detroit tied 2-2. The Blue Sox Harlond Clift leads off the game with
a home run for the Blue Sox and Jimmie Foxx follows suit two batters later for a 2-0 lead.
Clift gives one back on an error in the second and a Dusty Cooke double ties it up 2-2.
Another Foxx homer and a Myril Hoag double give Schenectady the lead, but Dixie Walker stroke
a 2-R single in the fourth to tie it at four. The game stays 4-4 until lead-footed Ernie
Lombardi legs out a run scoring, two-out infield single to put the Titans on top in the seventh.
They add two in the eighth and the Detroit bullpen holds on for a 7-4 win as the home team wins
for the first time in the series.

Game 6: Detroit (French) at Schenectady (Feller)
The series moves back to Schenectady with Detroit holding a 3-2 series lead. Surprise Detroit
starter Larry French does not fare well, allowing six runs in three innings as the Blue Sox take
a 6-2 lead. Young Feller struggles with command, and leaves with one out in the sixth (137 pitches)
still leading 6-2. Ed Brandt relieves and strikes out Arky Vaughan with the bases loaded but
surrenders a single to Lombardi, walks Henrich, and Pinky Higgins lines a three run double to
suddenly put Detroit up 7-6! Dutch Leonard relieved French in the fourth for the Titans and
logged five shutout innings, keeping the Titans within striking distance. Bill Lee came in
for the one-out save as the Titans comeback win earns them the 1938 championship!
W-Leonard(1-0), L- Brandt (0-1), SV-Lee (1) HR- Clift (3).
Henrich (.421, 5 RBI), Lombardi (.321, 5 RBI) Walker (321, 6 RBI and Vaughan (.320, 7 RBI) led
balanced Detroit offense. The Blue Sox offense was led by unsung Red Kress (.440) and Lou Finney(.360, 6 RBI)
while big guns Dickey (.231), Doerr (.174) and Foxx (.250) were held in check. Harlond Clift
went deep three time but all were solos.
Bill Lee went 1-0 with a save in 15 innings for the Titans (2.40), VanderMeer went 2-0 while
Harry Gumbert had a 3.38 ERA in 13innings for the Blue Sox but was an unlucky 0-2.
Feller, Melton and Lohrman all struggled as starters.
