After 154 games, the NL championship comes down to a best of 3 series between the Fairfax Atlantics and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Game 1: Dodgers - Johnny Rigney (14-7) at Atlantics - Red Ruffing (18-7). The Atlantics opened the scoring in the 1st inning, scoring 2 runs in part thanks to an error by Johnny Rigney. Buddy Lewis a nd Ival Goodman with the RBI hits. Atlantics took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning due to 2 more Dodger errors. Ival Goodman with the RBI single. The Dodgers got back in the game in the top of the 4th on a 2-run Johnny Mize HR. The Dodgers tied it 3-3 in the top of the 5th on an Earl Averill single. Max West gave the Atlantics a 4-3 lead in the bottom of 5th with a HR and the Atlantics added 2 more to take a 6-3 lead heading into the 6th inning. The Atlantics broke open the game in the 6th inning scoring 6 runs. The inning included a Zeke Bonura HR, 2 hits by the pitcher Ruffing, Goodman's 4th hit of the game and 2 more Dodger errors. The Atlantics seemed in control heading into the 8th inning with a 12-3 lead and their ace Ruffing on the mound. However, Ruffing's pitch count was high and after giving up a run and with 2 runners on base, Bob Weiland was called out of the pen. Weiland finished the inning but not before the Dodgers scored 2 more runs and closed the gap to 12-6. The Atlantics called on their "closer" Whitey Moore in the 9th inning and that didn't go well. After giving up 2 runs on 3 walks and 2 hits but only 1 out, he was mercifully pulled with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate. Joe Bowman induced a game-ending double play to give the Atlantics a 12-8 win. Ruffing (19-7) earns the win while Rigney (14-8) takes the loss. Joe Bowman, a starter during the season, gets his 1st save of the year. Ival Goodman led the Atlantics with 4 hits and 3 RBI's. Johnny Mize led the Dodgers with 2 hits including a HR with 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Game 2: Atlantics - Bill McGee (6-6) at Dodgers - Paul Derringer (19-12). The Atlantics took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a Hank Leiber double. They increased the lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning on a groundout. A Buddy Lewis 2-run HR in the 5th inning increased the lead to 4-0. The story of the game though was Bill McGee. A swingman during the season, he was dominant in the game. McGee pitched 6 perfect innings. In the top of the 7th inning, the Atlantics added another run to increase the lead to 5-0. The Dodgers got their first baserunner in the 7th inning as Bill Werber reached on an infield single but was erased by a double play. The Dodgers scored their first run in the 8th inning on a Cecil Travis single but the Atlantics were hesitant to go to the bullpen and stuck with McGee. McGee got out of the inning with only the one run scoring. He pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning and the Atlantics take the series with a 5-1 win. McGee (7-6) gets the win. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk while throwing the complete game. Derringer (19-13) took the loss.
