Game 2
Oct 5, 1965 - This day dawns bright and clear, with the sun promising a great day for a ballgame, unlike yesterdays rainy wet conditions. The wind is blowing out today, which could mean a lot more long hits in Tiger Stadium. The second game promises to be another exciting ballgame for Tiger and Rifle fans. Taking the hill for the home team Tigers will be big Earl Wilson, winner of 16 ballgames during the regular season. His opponent, Camilo Pascual outdid him a couple by raking up an 18 win campaign. Both these big righthanders have wicked fastballs and their managers are hoping they will be humming this game. Don Buford, the Tigers pesky leadoff hitter for this game has other ideas, and promptly bashes one of Pascual's first pitches over the RF fence for a quick 1-0 Tiger lead. Wilson cruises through the 1st, and into the 2nd and gets the first Rifles hitter out. But then Max Alvis and Jim Gilliam tag him for back to back homers that give the Rifles a 2-1 advantage. Quickly though the Tigers roar back as big Wes Covington, getting a start today after his recent heroics of the first game, singles to start the bottom of the Tigers 2nd. Tiger hot cornerman Ken McMullen follows with yet another homer to deep LF that gives the lead back to the Frankfort faithfull, by a 3-2 margin. An error by Rifle SS Roy McMillan, again starts trouble for Pascual, but he calms down long enought to whiff the opposing pitcher Wilson, who can hit a long ball himself. But a walk to Buford brings the quick hook for Pascual from Manager Bill Linn, and lefty Billy Hoeft comes in to nip this potential rally in the bud. Tiger hurler Wilson cannot handle the Rifles at all today and in the fourth he walks Gilliam, and rookie catcher Rene Lachemann powers a deep drive into the CF seats for a 4-3 Rifle lead. Yes, it looks as though that wind is playing a factor in homer happy Tiger Stadium today, folks! In the bottom of the 6th with Don Larsen on the mound for the Rifles the Tigers tie it at 4, as McMullen blasts his 2nd homer of the game. Meanwhile Tiger relievers Jim O'Toole, Steve Ridzik, Ron Perranoski, and Jim Coates wrap up those shiny Rifles by causing their batters to shoot blanks through the 10th inning, and suddenly we have an extra inning affair! Stu Miller, King of the Junkballers, does the same for the Rifles through the 9th inning. Rookie Steve Hargan gets Mgr. Linn's call for the 10th inning, after Miller leaves for a PH. He does the job getting shortstop Wayne Causey on a grounder. Norm Cash then smashes a single through the box to give the Tigers a baserunner. The ever dangerous Rocky Colavito then hits a little roller that nearly ties up the vet McMillan. However Roy does get the slow roller just in time to nail Rocky at firstbase for the 2nd out. With Mickey Mantle advancing to the dish, and a runner in scoring position, Mgr. Linn calls for the intentional walk, electing to take his chances with rookie CF Paul Blair. With two runners on base, Blair reaches out and picks off a Hargan curve for a base hit that drops into right CF. Ron Fairly quickly gets to the ball and heaves it towards home where Cash, who was off and running with 2 outs, of course, is also closing on home plate. Ron's throw is just a little late arriving and Cash is safe at home with the winning run. Today it is Blair who's timely hit brings Frankfort the gamewinner. Coates picks up the win for Frankfort's 2nd W.S game victory. Game 3 will move to Memorial Stadium in Alma Mo, and will come after a day of travel for the teams. Of course Mgr. Linn and the Rifles are hoping for a change of fortune at their own park. Plunkitt on the other hand would love to see the Tigers continue their clutch hitting and nail down a couple more wins in Alma. If not, the Series will return to Tiger Stadium for the final games. So game 3 awaits. BE THERE!!

Game 3 of the 1965 World series between the Frankfort Tigers and the Alma Rifles moved to Alma, Missouri. The Tigers were able to win 2 close games at Frankfort and led the series 2-0. The Rifles selected left hander, Joe Gibbon (8-5, 3.27). The Tigers selected their own lefty Denny Lemaster (12-9, 2.94). Gibbon worked out of the 1st inning after a Dick Howser double and two walks. In the third inning Howser led off with a single and promptly stole second base. Norm Cash singled Howser to 3rd and Rocky Colavito sac flied Howser home. Mickey Mantle followed with a walk. Although Gibbon got out of the inning with only a run surrendered, Tiger manager Bill Linn gave Gibbon the hook in favor of the expected starter Bob Shaw (11-14, 4.37). After pitching 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings Denny Lemaster left the game with an injury in favor of Steve Ridzik (2-2, 4.03). Ridzik was retired 4 straight Rifles before leaving the game in favor of Tiger reliever Eddie Fisher (9-6, 2.24). The Rifles were able to battle for a run when Jim Gilliam scored off of Roberto Clemente’s sacrifice fly which tied the game at 1-1. Bob Shaw was masterful for the Rifles and pitched 3 scoreless innings before handing the ball over to the Rifles relief ace Hoyt Wilhelm. Wilhelm promptly surrendered a home run toDon Buford, the first batter he faced. Wilhelm then walked two more batters before settling down and retiring the side. In the bottom of the 7th with two outs, the score 2-1 in favor of the Tigers Roger Maris pinch hit for Chico Salmon. Maris sent the pitch over the right field wall tying the game at 2. Rather than lift the struggling Wilhelm, who had been touched up earlier in the series Manager Linn decided to stick with him. This would prove to be a big mistake. Dick Howser singled off Wilhelm and Buford followed it up with his second home run of the game, both off Wilhelm, giving the Tigers the 4-2 lead. Stu Miller relieved and pitched 1 and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Tigers handed the ball off to Ron Perranowski who retired all 6 batters he faced. The win for the Tigers gave them a 3-0 lead over the Rifles. This game was Don Buford’s who finished the game 2-5, with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI. The Rifles, which came back from a 8 game lead in the last month of the season, will need another miracle comeback to win this one. 10/7/1965, FRA65-ALM65, Memorial Stadium 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP 1965 Tigers 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 2 0 4 8 0 13 0 1965 Rifles 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 3 0 3 0 Tigers AB R H BI AVG Rifles AB R H BI AVG Howser ss 4 2 3 0 .556 Gilliam lf 2 1 0 0 .100 Perranoski p 0 0 0 0 .000 Fairly cf 3 0 1 0 .364 Buford 2b 5 2 2 3 .385 Clemente rf 3 0 0 1 .182 Cash 1b 4 0 1 0 .500 McCovey 1b 4 0 0 0 .083 Colavito rf 2 0 1 1 .273 Alvis 3b 4 0 0 0 .182 Mantle lf 2 0 0 0 .000 Lachemann c 3 0 0 0 .143 Bowens lf 0 0 0 0 .000 Miller,S p 0 0 0 0 .000 McMullen 3b 4 0 0 0 .167 Salmon 2b 2 0 0 0 .000 Blair cf 3 0 1 0 .429 Maris ph 1 1 1 1 .286 Burgess ph 1 0 0 0 .000 McMillan ss 3 0 1 0 .091 Phillips cf 0 0 0 0 .000 Gibbon p 0 0 0 0 .000 Howard c 3 0 0 0 .000 Ferrara ph 1 0 0 0 .500 Bailey ph 2 0 0 0 .000 Shaw p 0 0 0 0 .000 Lemaster p 2 0 0 0 .000 Geiger ph 1 0 0 0 .000 Ridzik p 0 0 0 0 .000 Wilhelm p 0 0 0 0 .000 Lynch ph 1 0 0 0 .000 Rodgers c 1 0 0 0 .000 Fisher p 0 0 0 0 .000 28 2 3 2 Causey ph 1 0 0 0 .000 34 4 8 4 Tigers INN H R ER BB K PCH STR ERA Lemaster 3.2 1 0 0 0 3 34 22 0.00 Ridzik 1.1 0 0 0 0 1 11 8 0.00 Fisher BS 1, W 2-0 2.0 2 2 2 1 0 32 20 6.00 Perranoski S 1 2.0 0 0 0 0 1 21 12 0.00 9.0 3 2 2 1 5 98 62 Rifles INN H R ER BB K PCH STR ERA Gibbon 3.0 3 1 1 3 1 51 24 3.00 Shaw 3.0 2 0 0 2 0 35 20 0.00 Wilhelm L 0-2 1.2 3 3 3 2 0 37 19 16.88 Miller,S 1.1 0 0 0 2 0 26 15 0.00 9.0 8 4 4 9 1 149 78 FRA: Lynch batted for Ridzik in the 6th Burgess batted for Blair in the 7th Phillips inserted at cf in the 7th Bailey batted for Howard in the 8th Causey batted for Fisher in the 8th Bailey moved to c in the 8th Causey moved to ss in the 8th Bowens inserted at lf in the 9th ALM: Ferrara batted for Gibbon in the 3rd Geiger batted for Shaw in the 6th Maris batted for Salmon in the 7th Gilliam moved to 2b in the 8th Maris moved to lf in the 8th Rodgers inserted at c in the 8th 2B-Howser. With the Rifles trailing 3-0 Rifles manager Bill Linn was surprisingly upbeat. “We’ve beat the odds before and we can do it again,” Linn was quoted as saying. Linn chose starter Vern Law (11-13, 3.20) to start the improbable comeback attempt. Tiger manager Gary Plunkett chose workhorse Wally Bunker (13-14, 4.59). The Tigers jumped right on Law with a 1st inning home run by red hot first baseman Norm Cash. It would be the only run the Tigers would manage. The Rifles tied the game off of Roberto Clemente’s grounder which scored Jim Gilliam and tied the game. The struggling Willie McCovey gave the Rifles a 2-1 lead in the 6th with a solo home run and Ron Fairly tacked on a solo shot in the 8th. The real story of the game was Vern Law. Law pitched a complete game, scattering 7 hits, allowed 1 walk, and forced 2 double plays in the 4th and 5th to kill innings. When it was all over, Law had only thrown 102 pitches. With the series standing at 3-1, the Tigers looked to game 1 starter, Dave Morehead (18-4, 3.07 to end the series. The Rifles called upon their own game 1 starter, Tommy John, to keep the Rifles slim hopes alive. The Rifles were able to scrape together a run in the third after a Ron Fairly single, a passed ball, and a base hit by Roberto Clemente. Third baseman, Max Alvis then homered twice to give the Rifles a 3-0 lead. In the meantime, Tommy John was pitching a shutout into the ninth. Rather than allow well rested Stu Miller to replace John in the 9th, Manager Linn allowed John to take the mound. After retiring the first two Tigers, Don Buford and Dick Howser, Paul Blair walked and Rocky Colavito homered, making the score 3-2. Having seen his bullpen wilt throughout the first three series games, Linn decided to let John try to finish it. Norm Cash sent a double down the right field line. That was all the Rifles manager could take and the call went into crafty junkballer Stu Miller. With right handed hitting Ken McMullen coming up, Tiger manager Plunkitt, called on the left handed hitting veteran, Smokey Burgess. Miller struck out Burgess, ending the game and making the series 3-2. Can the Rifles pull out another improbable comeback? With the surging Alma Rifles hanging in there and beating the Frankfort Tigers in game five, the World Series now moved back to Tiger Stadium for game 6. The Rifles chose 2nd game starter Camilo Pascual ands the Tigers picked Earl Wilson for a rematch of the game 2 pitchers. Neither did well in their original W.S. starts, and it was hoped that a 2nd chance would see these two turn in a solid performance, as they did many times during the 1965 SPB season. Alas, this was not to be, as game 6 turns out to be the strangest game of the entire 1965 W.S., so far. Wilson struggled in the Rifle first, but managed to get out of a bases loaded situation unscathed. In the bottom of the first, Stormin' Norman Cash, who has been red hot, put the Tigers up front 1-0 with a mighty wallop into the rightfield stands. This lead was very short lived as switch hitting catcher Bob Rodgers led off the bottom of the first with a homer off Wilson to tie the game at 1-1. Then the awakening bat of Willie McCovey gave the Rifles a 2-1 lead by leading off the 3rd inning the same way off the still struggling Wilson. They then made it a 4-1 game as both Roger Maris and Willie Mac again touched Wilson for solo homers in the 5th inning. Pascual began having his troubles in the bottom of the 5th. when the struggling Tiger, veteran switcher, Mickey Mantle led of by drawing a walk from the Rifle pitcher. A fielders choice put Wayne Causey in the Micks place, and catcher Easy Ed Bailey cracked a double to LF that gave the Tigers runners at 2nd & 3rd. PH Smoky Burgess, batting for Wilson, made it 4-2 with a ground out that saw Causey score. Then an error by Ron Fairly in RF, allowed Bailey to advance to 3b, while putting Tigers lead off man Don Buford on 1B. Shortstop Dick Howser then lined a double to left, that scored Bailey, and sent Buford to 3b. At this point manager Linn pulled his 17 game winner in favor or veteran LH Billy Hoeft, who delived the Rifles out of the 5th inning by getting Colavito on a ground out. But the Rifles now only had a 4-3 lead. Plunkitt decided to bring in his ace RH reliever, Eddie Fisher early this game to try and keep things under controll. But the usually effective Fisher ended up taking his lumps early and often in this one. A one out single by Roy McMillan, was followed by a single from Hoeft, and a throwing error by LF Wes Covington left these Rifle runners on 2nd & 3rd. Maris who had homered his last at bat was walked setting up a force anywhere. This was a very controversile move by Mgr Plunkitt, as you shall soon see. Fisher then caught Fairly swinging and missing a famed knuckler for out number 2, but McCovey blasted the ball into oblivion with a grandslammer that really put a hush on the hometown faitful, as the score was now 8-3. This was Willie's 3rd homer of the game!! The score remained the same untill the bottom of the 7th when PH Ken "Hawk" Harrelson got a one out hit off Hoeft. PH Jake Wood sent Harrelson to 3rd with another base knock off the vet Rifle lefty, and Buford quickly singled in the "Hawk" for a 8-4 game. Howser then k'd for out number two. But the crafty Cash kept things going by coaxing a walk that loaded the bases off the tiring Billy Hoeft. Linn changed pitchers bring in Hoyt Wilhelm, who had been strangely ineffective earlier in his W.S. appearances. Colavito proved this point by catching a 2-1 Wilhelm knuckler and blasting it deep into the left field seats for yet another Series grand slam! This blow tied the game and the crowd went totally "ape" when Covington followed planting Wilhelms next pitch over the RF wall. Now theTigers had taken an amazing 9-8 lead. Stu Miller then entered the game in the stead of the shellshocked Wilhelm, and got the Rifles out of the inning. Plunkitt then called on his lefty closer Ron Perranoski to try and deliver the Tigers an amazing win of this game. Light hitting infielder McMillan quickly brought Rifle fans to their feet by cracking Perranoski's 3rd pitch of the 8th inning into the LF stands to tie the game at 9-9. McMillan received a hearty handshake from manager Linn, and most of the Rifle players for this surprising shot! Then in the 9th, Rifles thirdbaseman Max Alvis delivered the telling blow with another homer off Perranoski and sent a crushed bunch of Tigers fans home wondering if this Series was going to go totally astray. Miller retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and hope was dimming quickly for the Tigers, who at one time had led the Series 3 games to 0, and were now returning for the deciding 7th game, after dropping 3 straight games. Pitching matchups for the all important game 7 will include Vern Law for the Rifles, and Wally Bunker for the Tigers. Though both these pitchers did exceptionally well in game 3 starts, it was Law who ended up on top with a strong CG (the only one in the Series so far.) performance against the Tigers youngster. The crafty Law is hoping to nail it down with another strong game. Youngster Bunker is hoping to nail down the deciding game and become a hero for the slumping Tigers. On October 12, 1965 the surging Alma Rifles managed by Bill "Gabby" Linn took on the stumbling Frankfort Tigers of Gary "Casey" Plunkitt for the World Championship title of SPB - I. On the mound for this final game is Vern Law who stymied the Tigers in game 3, taking on Wally Bunker, who pitched well in game three, but fell a run short. The Tigers early on looked as though they would dominate this Series by taking the first 3 games, but then their luck changed quickly and they lost 3 straight, including a real thriller of a game 6. So on this cool crisp clear day the final battle for THE SERIES was to unfold. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, veteran Tiger immortal Mickey Mantle tagged Law for a solo HR, and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Mantle had slumped badly during this Series, but had been on base a lot due to many walks. Then in the bottom of the 4th, another Tiger veteran, catcher Ellie Howard tagged Law for a 3 run shot following singles by Mantle and Ken McMullen that made it 4-0, and with the way Bunker was pitching the game looked almost like a sure thing. Wally breezed along into the 7th inning and then ran into trouble when Rifle star McCovey, who blasted 3 home runs in yesterdays dramatic game, led off with a hit. Wally then K'd another star from yesterdays game, Max Alvis, who hit the game winning homer that gave the Rifles their win in game 6. PH Roger Maris then walked on 4 straight pitches, and Plunkitt, sensing that his young hurler was running out of gas quickly brought in veteran relief man Steve Ridzik to bail out the youngster. Ridzik induced Bob Rodgers to ground into a BIG DP that bailed the Tigers out of the tight spot. Meanwhile relievers Joe Gibbon and Hoyt Wilhelm had been pitching effectively for the Rifles through this same period of time, after Law had been PH for in the 5th inning. Ridzik did not fare so well in inning 8 though as he hit leadoff man Roy McMillan, walked PH Gary Geiger, and then induced Jim Gilliam to hit into a 1-5-3 DP when Ridzik came up with a hot grounder, threw to McMullen who nailed McMillan at 3b, and fired to first to double up Junior. However, Chico Salmon, playing RF placed a base hit that just sneaked through the hole to put runners on first & third. Enough of Ridziks shenanigans, and lefty Jim O'Toole came in to face Ron Fairly, but Fairly ruined the strategy by lacing yet another hit that scored Geiger. This was getting way out of hand, so Plunkitt again made a switch bringing in ace LH Perranoski to face the dangerous Willie McCovey with the game gettiing a little to dangerous. Ron was not up to the task and McCovey sent a drive that nearly went out of the park for yet another huge HR for this Series!! The Tigers were totally stunned, and you literally could hear a pin drop when McCovey's drive sailed well back into the RF stands. Suddenly the game was tied, and Lady Luck had turned her back once more on the bumbling Clawed Ones. Finally the inning ended as Perranoski got Alvis swinging on a curve. But the score was 4-4 and the damage had been done! In the bottom of the 8th, Linn selected another veteran reliever, and Don Larsen strolled in to pitch for the Rifles. Little Don Buford, who was an early star when the Tigers were rolling in this series, spanked Larsen for a hit, with steady hot hitting Norm Cash advancing to the plate. Cash caught a Larsen fastball and sent it winging to deep RF. This line drive looked like it would leave the park, but hit just off the top of the fence and came caroming back with Salmon in hot pursuit. Buford had on the burners though, and never hesitated at 3b. He caught home plate with a great hook slide that narrowly beat the throw from Salmon and the Tigers had a 5-4 lead! Enter Bob Shaw in relief for the Rifles, and he quickly nailed Colavito and Mantle with strikeouts to end the 8th inning. In the 9th, Perranoski stayed erratic by walking Maris, and Plunkitt, taking no further chances with the fading LH, brought in Jim Coates. Coates was "on" and retired 3 straight to nail down the Championship for the Tigers. Perranoski fell into the win, and Larsen took the loss in this deciding game. Norm Cash who had a 14 for 28 series for an amazing .500 batting average was picked as the Series MVP. He had 3 doubles and 2 homers, with 5 rbi's for the Tigers. There were many other stars in this series, but Cash's timely hitting throughout the 7 games was by far the most valuable contribution. So the Frankfort Tigers nailed down their 2nd SPB - I title, after having won their first back in 1961. The Alma Rifles almost pulled off a stunning upset in this World Series. But finally the Tigers won that elusive 4th game despite the heroics of many including Willie McCovey, Max Alvis, and Ron Fairly. There were an amazing 30 homers hit in this Series including 5 by McCovey, and 4 by Alvis for the Rifles. Little Don Buford also smacked 4 into the seats, and all these came in the first 4 games.
